Do you feel apple should expand the width of the new iPhone?

  • No, Apple has selected the perfect width. Ay larger, and it would be difficult to use with one hand.

  • Yes, people use larger phones comfortably every day. Apple should make the phone screen wider.

I don't know. But I do enjoy the size of the 4S I have. I do wonder how long it will take me to get used to the 5S - if there is an adjustment period at all.

I played with the Galaxy S4 in the AT&T store and despite it's larger size, I found it to work well enough in one hand.

I had the same experience. While some people will say the iPhone is perfect for one hand, I played with the S4 and HTC One and both were fine in my one hand. Lets not forget you have stretch with one hand now with the i5 due to the height increase.

It's all perception. People will believe what they want to believe.

We got...

4 inch display from some..

4.3 inch display from some..

4.5 inch display from some again..

5 inch display from a few

5.5 inch display from another.

This will not end, no matter what Apple gives us today, next year or the next. As soon as Apple goes with a 4.3 display like I think they might next year, we will have rants from those that want it bigger. Than when Apple produces a 4.5 inch screen in the same form factor, whiners will complain its not a 4.7 or a 5 inch screen and Apple is playing catch up. It will not end.

Hope Apple stays the course, and provides a nice solid looking iphone for the masses, not for the few fanatics. :D

I still like the idea of two sizes. However I'm not going to get on Apple too much if they rather stick to one comfortable size. Since there is the 4" I would likely want the second size to be 5" and if they did there would be the "it's too large crowd" or too small etc...

In fairness to you who like smaller phones, looks like the galaxy note is not comfortable in your pocket.

Cargo pants are incredibly useful.

one handed is good, However making the iphone wider would be nice.
Send Tim Cook an email, let him know what you think.

First of all The increase in lenght was mainly to go from a 4:3 aspect ratio to the more standard 16:9 that is used on TVs and almost every other smartphone. I remember the avalanche of Android fans complaining about the "elongated" screen when in fact their phones are equally elongated. It was the 4/s that was shorty.

Second as someone mentioned, Apple does not care what a group of fans think on an online forum. They base designs on sales analysis. Android has a large market share, but the bulk of it are not the large high end models like the GS4 or HTC One, the bulk are the cheap small screen phones.

Think about it, why both Samsung and HTC made mini versions of their phones with 4.3" screens.

Maybe Apple will go 4.3 for the iPhone 6 but I would not count on anything larger than 4.5". You say Apple can't ignore the segment of the population that wants a large iPhone, but what is actual percent of the market wants a larger screen? And no a forum poll won't say it. Until that segment is larger than the segment that wants the same size things won't change.

I use my Samsung Galaxy S3 just fine with one hand, going back to my 5 feels awkward and obsolete. Granted there are trade-offs between both devices but I do like the larger screen.

I'm perfectly happy with the 4.7" screen on my HTC. I'd think that Apple will eventually offer a phone with a larger screen. Who knows how long they'll wait though...

Yep, for me the 4,7" will be the perfect size for the iphone.. I use my iphone with one hand most of the time and I think that anything bigger than 4,7" will be difficult for the "one handed" use :) Apple should make iphone with 2 sizes from which you could choose .:)

Every single time I've seen a poll on iPhone screen size it points towards about 55-60% for a larger screen size and 40-45% keep same screen size (give or take a few %). At this point its inarguable, there is a significant amount of people who want a larger iPhone. With that there is still a good amount of people who don't. So, the easy answer is to offer two screen sizes, a 4" and a 5". This way everybody is happy with choices.

Apple offers size options with iPad, iPod, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, why not the iPhone too?

But........I bet some, after Apple does release someday two sizes mentioned, will whine that there isn't a 4.3 / 4.5 / 4.7 inch display :D and they don't want the 5 inch display nor 4 inch. I'll place the first bet.

You're right of course. I didn't create this thread to truly affect change at apple. I don't expect cook to see this and all of a sudden stop production =)

It's just for fun talking about it. Macrumors is happy to get the forum traffic, and we get distracted for a few minutes talking about it.

An iPhone 4 is over 4.75" diagonal but much of that space is taken up by an homebutton, a camera, and a earpiece. I think they could easily fit a a 4.5 inch screen in the size of an iPhone 5 which is over 5" diagonal. By pushing the bezels smaller they could fit a much larger screen in the same frame, essentially removing the problem of hand size and the need of a larger phone for a larger screen.

I like most, love the physical size of the iphone and the fact that you can use it with one hand. But i do wish for a larger screen. I believe i remember them patenting edge to edge display a year or so ago so maybe that is something coming down the road.

I would prefer a wider iPhone screen size. Preferably the size of the Nexus 4 screen. It fits very comfortably in my hand and I wouldn't mind Apple doing that.

I would predict that if Apple comes out with a 5+ inch screen that the adoption rate would very high despite all the people defending the screen size.

Personally. It's the battery stupid to me. I am very close to jumping ship to Note iii because it will last for days on a charge. My 4S drains about 1% a minute when running Waze which I use for work all the time. So I'm constantly plugged in while driving.

If the iPhone adopted the larger screen, it would be so much nicer!

Currently, I have the Note II which has a really large screen. It's much easier to read and watch movies on. I like it a lot!

I have small hands but I still prefer a larger phone.

You like the Note ii ? I have owned an iPhone since first release and I'm currently on a 4S. I have fear of leaving iOS but I too feel a larger screen and battery are just too far away with Apple. Maybe July of next year at the earliest. I am due for a subsidy and don't want to waste it on a 2 year agreement with 5S and seemingly minor upgrades. Do you think the leap from iOS to android is difficult? Can I AirPlay music on Apple TV from Andriod? I have zero experience with Android.

You people just don't get it. If the iPhone were just a phone then a 3 inch screen would be perfect. However, you have thousands and thousands of apps that would benefit from a larger screen so they can be utilized better. Any spreadsheets, presentations, documents, movie editing, picture editing, apps etc. can work better with a larger screen. I think a 5 - 5.5 inch screen which uses most of the surface of the phone as possible, is not out of the questions to be useable by most people.

If you're doing spreadsheets and photo editing I don't know why you wouldn't just use a tablet. No screen that's small enough to fit in your pocket will ever be ideal for certain tasks.

I do like the Note II; however let me say this-- Android have some nice features and Apple have some nice features as well. Neither is perfect.

About switching: it depends on how tech-savvy you are. Do you usually adapt to new UI interfaces rather quickly? Are you the type of person who gets bored with the same plain design and want to customize? If yes, you might be a good candidate, and the leap would not be difficult for you. However, if you are the person who gets used to the way things are and cannot be bothered trying out/learning new interfaces, then probably not.

About AirPlay--I don't think so...probably needs to jailbreak your Apple TV.

If you have tons of Apple products and want them all sync nicely, iPhone would be the best choice.

Yes, we all get stuck in the 2 year contract. (unless you switch phone companies) :\ I wish I had a different phone every 6 month. :D

Thanks. I'm pretty tech savvy when it compares to general public but probably a novice compared to people on this forum.

Things I'd miss: Air play, group messaging, everyone having an iPhone charger where ever you go. Apple complete care.

Things I wouldn't miss: battery life sucking, small screen.

I'm really really torn. Waiting for announcements to decide. But this is for sure the closest I've come to ditching Apple. Only other Apple product I have is Apple TV so I guess I could get Chrome Cast and air play thru that. Thanks for the advice.

If they make it wider, then I'd like it shorter at the same time. Actually for a phone I'd prefer a nano sized iPhone rather than one moving in the direction of phablets. I have a mini, I don't need something larger, I'd rather have something smaller if it changes size.

There is one thing, though, that I love about the size of my iPhone 5, and it's the 16:9 aspect ratio, which is perfect for Airplay.

Can't wait till game controllers are supported, this device will be perfect for a home gaming system (via Airplay).

Ok, you don't have to complete the picture for me. Enjoy your cargo pants and Galaxy Note.
