What if you were in Apple's/educator's shoes....?

Apple statement:
"The initial supply of dual processor G5s will be allocated primarily to education orders so we can meet back to school deadlines"

Those of us that aren't in education don't understand, but this is a very important issue; We cannot order products at anytime of the year.

Most of the time if they (Board of Education) know something will arrive late they may even block you from making the order in the first place; On top of that the technology coordinators go well out of their way to stop any Apple orders.

I know that waiting sucks, but there's more to it than what meets the eye.

If you think this is such a lousy idea why not come to just about ANY SCHOOL, and see how many Dells are heaped inside the buildings.

Waiting for a witty response from the disgruntled ones who made G5 pre-orders.

My Dual 2.0 BTO radeon 9800 is shipping on or before 10/15/03.... :( such a long time. Well my dad was able to tough it out whe n he ordered his 17inch pb the day it was announced, so i guess i will be able as well..

Dual G5's at VA Tech

I work in Higher Ed. In southwestern Va. Word is that Va. Tech has ordered 2 million dollars worth of G5s to build a really huge supercluster. Maybe that's one of the Apples Higher Ed's priority sales.

I wonder if this applies at all to those that have ADC memberships? I've got a *student* ADC membership, and I ordered a DP G5. It's due to ship (supposedly) by 9/2.

My order was placed at 12:25pm pst on June 23. I started placing the order literally moments after the site came back up from updating to include the G5... I want my dual 2ghz machine and I want it to ship on or before 8/29!

I realize sometimes you have to wait, but in the computer industry more than two months is a long time, and to get delayed after more than 2 months certainly isnt the service one should get after spending over $3000 on a computer.

Frankly, I think Apple needs to get it's $&*! together. I don't drop $3500 on a computer every day of the week, and when I do - I don't expect to be told I will get it sometime in October. They should of have been ready to meet initial demand in a more timely manner than they are.

For gods' sake - they don't even have them on display in stores. Are they trying to hide something? The whole thing is beginning to seem a little shady to me. How convenient that noone can review the machines, use the machines or see the machines before they buy them.

Grrr....I love their products, but the overhype, underproduce cycle has got to stop.

Joe

and at the same time i remember hearing people scream that apple needed to announce new products because the g4 was getting sooo long in the tooth and if they just knew what was coming, they could at least plan and prepare and be able to stop guessing

blah blah blah

and now people are mad that they told them what was happening, told them it would ship in september, and they're not behind schedule at all...

I think it's good that less than 4% of the computers are Apples.
Immagine how much delay Apple would have if they had 20% of the market. :D :D

Geesh would you like some cheese with that whine?

Seriously. Cut Apple some slack. Even with the best estimates, user surveys of product demand, and a few month lead-time IBM can only churn out so many CPUs at a time, construct so many boxes at a time. Which equals to a finite supply to begin with. What would you have preferred that Jobs had said “sometime this fall”? Everyone would have turned psycho over something like that.
Apple's doing what any business does. Cater to their larger clients first and then to the individual customers second.
They are a business like any other and rule number one if someone shells out hundreds of thousands to possibly millions as someone posted here you kiss massive butt to keep them as a return customer and to keep them happy.

It’s only what? 2 months away? Be patient. 60+/- days isn't that long of a wait. If you've waited how many years for a G5 you should be able to wait a tad longer. Heh at least you guys aren’t stuck in a holding position for a G5 laptop. Talk about torture. :p

Hopefully this is true, for vary selfish reasons of course. It sucks to those that ordered early, but the graphics lab here at school has an order in for about 50 dual 2.0 machines, and I would love to get my hands on them. Been rearranging and upgrading machines for the past month to make room for the new machines. Hopefully there will be a huge thumbs up, a flying metal salute and happiness all around very shortly here at my job. But as I've learned, never get the hopes up when Apple is concerned.

don't trash me too much... but i just ordered today (i expect to wait, and i don't really mind...). where exactly do you see "ship by date xx"?

just curious.

i see the items listed in the order status and then "5-7 weeks" or "2-3 weeks" or whatever

just wondering where you all get your specific dates.

If you go to the Apple store, at the top-right of the screen there should be a "Check Order Status" link. Click on it, log in, and click on the "Details" button next to your order. There should be a ship-by date on the order.

Having just read through the posts, hasn't anyone interpreted this as those orders going to educational institutions? Not just people using an educational discount.

For example, here's how I read this...

I (hypothetically, I'm broke, remember that) order my dual machine June 23rd with my educational discount, however when I log into the store I log into the section that is ordering for personal use.

Then, the graphics department at the school I attend order loads of these puppies on the 28th, through the educational store, but clicking into the "Institutional use" or however they word it.

I read this as those machines ordered to be used at institutions will recive shipping priority over personal college kids.

Yes, it sucks, but there's a few good points....

A) Colleges usually buy new machines every 6 months to a year. Not replacing whole labes or anything, but buying another 10 machines here, 30 machines there. It's consistent repeat business. Keep these people happy.

B) If the labs are stocked at the beginning of a semester or as close to as possible, then you are exposing more people to the machine than if any of us had it on our desk.

We all knew it would take time, and especially with the demand and various hold-ups some decisions had to be made. If they would have shipped all personal ones first there would be someone out there saying that apple is pissing off their important accounts and not exposing as many people as possible. It's a no-win situation.

Anyways, flame away...

Well, look. There's nothing in that document that implies that Apple's specifically changing the dates for people who ordered early through the Apple Store and have a promised ship date.

Yes, educational institutions obviously have priority (given where things have gone so far.) Yes, resellers are last in line (and remember that note was aimed at explaining to them why they have nothing to sell.)

Still, as of yesterday, an Apple sales support rep whom I called about my "ship on or before 8/29" order indicated emphatically that if there were going to be more than a one or two day delay I'd almost certainly have heard a week or two ago, and that all indications to them are that things are going fine.

Maybe they're deliberately handing out deceptive information, but if they're going to be late on an order with an estimated ship date they'll have to let the cat out of the bag sometime, and time's running out.

guess it's just the fact that the order hasn't processed yet (ordered it maybe 2 hours ago)... as ITMediaCo said

thanks

A post I read on another thread really says it all...it's like Apple's dangling a really big carrot in front of all our faces. While at WWDC they did mention that there are three models of the G5 coming out, the one they really hyped up is the Dual Processor model, and how they'd be shipping in August. Now that they've got everyone's attention (in addition to their credit card numbers), shipping has been delayed.

Come on Apple, give us SOMETHING. The fact that the 15" Powerbook still hasn't been updated is bad enough.

And if one more person tells me to be patient, I'm going to reach right through this monitor and...!!! We've all BEEN patient. Enough is enough! MORE POWER--NOW!

Read a quote at bash.org where a guy said, "Whoever invents a way to reach through a computer monitor and stab the person on the other side" will become a very rich and famous person. Oh so true.

I still don't believe it......Yet...

First, Trust me....I do understand that big business gets the perks of the big deal. I have worked in IT for 15 years, the first 10 of which were with an enormous company. (Think -- IBM, Motorola, Intel) We got what we wanted and when we wanted it.

The last five or so have been with small fish who don't have the bucks to throw around. The sales folks I talk to these days are pretty desperate though because they don't have the big company as their account. If they did have a big account I wouldn't get the time of day. :(

All That said, I would expect Apple to relatively honest about the expected ship date when I have placed my order and offered my $5000 to them. I'm not going to explode if it ships within a couple of days of what is expected. However, I will be extremely unhappy if the ship date goes by and I start hearing how they are shipping all over the place and I still don't have mine.

I don't consider it whining to expect what's been offered.

Regards,

This news is quite a switch from the past. When the iMac G4's came out, I ordered one for my edu institution. I ordered right around the announcement, maybe one day later. Then I read of consumers getting their orders before mine when they had ordered 1-2 weeks later than me. I felt I was getting screwed just because I had an EDU discount. I finally just cancelled my order and ordered through Amazon.com because Amazon had STOCK and was offering $200 credit for a future purchase w/computer purchase, and the EDU discount was only $100, so I came out ahead on that deal as I needed to order a monitor through Amazon anyway.

So IF this RUMOR turns out to be true I've been there, done that. It would come full circle if I end up getting my order sooner this time (ordered July 24, expected to ship on or before Oct. 3)

Gee thanks; that makes be feel even better. But the delays aren't the decision making factor, but then again that could change.

I imagine that the delays are primarily for desktops, not notebooks, but Apple could surprise me and just delay everything.. I heard they're having issues getting ipods out.

Now that you pushed the right button, I remember not too long ago Apple was praised for their JIT logistics... No warehouse full of orders...Great! Just no products in the hands of computers. Oops!

G5 just in...

Just got a G5 1.6 in...two notes.

1. It is absolutely quiet. We almost could not tell that is was on.

2. Totally beautiful. It is far and away the best looking machine I have ever seen. It actually looks like it is worth 2 grand.
