The Apple and the dell

If anyone is to survive Dell, they must not fill their warehouses with stock. We as Apple users are going to need to prepare ourselves for a very "build to order" future. Besides, everyone wanted a chance to pre-order a G5, even if it were to ship out much later! So I guess everyone has made it clear to Apple, Don't tell us what is going on with Powerbooks, just keep it under your hat 'til they are on the store shelves.

There's a pattern here.

Apple announces next big thing.

Appleytes order NBTs by the droves.

First NBTs show up.

Real-world reviews don't live up to Steve's RDF hype of NBT.

NBTs are delayed.

NBT purchasers are frustrated because their overhyped NBT is obsolescing in a warehouse and not in their hands while competitors work on updating their own NBT.

New 1.6 G5

Walked into my School's compter store last Friday and bought one. Almost bought one on thurs but wanted to hold out for 1.8G. That lasted less than 24 hrs.

I got it home and installed everything on it and preformed my own bench test. Civ III on a huge map with 16 civs. I'm currently in the Industrial age and the computer civs turns take less time than mine does. Under a minute where on my old G4 it could take up to 10 minutes per turn.

Great  I'm waiting for my Dual ( And have been for 6 months to do some serious work that needs the power and all of these educational orders are being filled first so some kids can play Quake.
Thanks Apple.

Also the latest dates for Mac Zone, Macconections and MacWarehouse is the 2 gig Duals won't be recieved by them until the middle of SEPT.
C>R>A>P!!!!!!

<chuckle> sorry, I have to laugh at this one. I think apple could have avoided this by not starting the 'now shipping' deal. Of course, then we'd be complaining about shipping delays. It's a no-win.

ok. so it's been about 5 hours since i placed my order....

dual 2ghz, and a ton of extras (isights, ipods, base station, blank dvds, etc-not all for me)...

and i've already checked the order status like 5 times... granted, the other stuff is shipping today or in the next few days (minus the ipods and g5), but still, i can only imagine that my order checking will hit the 3 or 4 digit mark by the time i actually get the g5 late in october....

no no no... he'll announce that arrival of the new G6/980 shipping in 2033. Dead people will get their orders first.

Will someone who actually has a G5 post some Photoshop results! I'm tired of reading all the x-bench garbage. Thank you!

Well, a guy on Apple's G5 discussion board just indicated that he'd been contacted by Apple and told his dual 2 GHz G5 (ordered at the Apple Store immediately after announcement) was on its way.

G5 availability at Stanford

There are about 30 boxed G5s (1.6 and 1.8) stacked up nicely
in the middle of the Stanford University campus computer store,
ready to be sold.

The FedEx labels on the boxes indicate that they were shipped on 8-18
and arrived at Stanford on 8-19.

They don't have a G5 out on display yet for visitors to play with.

Hope they don't take too long.
I was trying to hold out till MWSF, but saw a 1.6 at CompOOSA yesterday and it was all I could do to not lick it. The case, inside and out, is a work of art; easily the most aesthetic Mac ever made. I immediatley sold some Apple stock and ordered a duallie.
As long as it arrives before my birthday in November, I'll be happy(but sooner is always better).

The WAIT

My school kids and I (hehehe) made an educational order of a 2 Gig dual on June 29 and originally got a "ship by" date of Sept. 2. That was actually reduced to Aug. 29 in late July. They also reduced the price. I check my credit card and the Apple Store order at least twice a day. My kids aren't quite as bad. They just ask me once a day if it's been shipped. So far, no change in the ship date!

I should also say I was ready to order a G4 in June, but I thought there might be an announcement of new models at one of the summer meetings, so I held off. I have to weigh the wait against what I might have done!

Wait....

Yes I like many others are in the same boat....ordered Dual 2.0 from an Apple store in NJ. My G5 pro card has number one on it....I have the magical 29 August date too.... mine was a build to order bluetooth/9800 so if there are a few boxes in sitting in stores I'm not going to get too nuts. But somebody must know something somewhere.. all these things aren't going to blast off all at once. I've been checking ebay... waiting to see if someone is going to try to hawk one for a profit....to date it looks like there are no individuals who actually have the box that are trying to sell...just a few scam artists....Who's ready for this as soon as you get your G5 go buy a 23" HD display... seven ten or thirty days go by.. enough for the return policy time to expire and bang 30" HD display on sale for yeah about the same as the 23" is now....

I just built new G5's at the Apple Store and 1.6 and 1.8 models say 7-10 business days to ship. Dual 2.0 G5 is 4-6 weeks (and supposedly accounts for more than 50% of all preorders). These times have been DRASTICALLY reduced as just yesterday the Apple site said 4-6 weeks for a single and 5-7 weeks for duals. So it seems production has just ramped up and these things will be flying all over the place in the next month.

1.8 Delay

Someone on Apples discussions posts that their 1.8 was scheduled to ship yesterday or today, and they got a notification that the new target ship date is 9/11...

My recent experience with them is that they don't note the delay until it 'happens', then they set a new date.

Seems Like there an awful lot of 8/29er's that would be very unhappy if they get that notice. I mean it seems like everyone who ordered a dualie back in June has a ship date of 8/29. Face it, With that many orders for that date Apple must know already if they are going to make the date or not. The parts are either there and being built or they're not. And If they're not then Apple's not gonna make the date.
I don't pretend to know what Apple's production schedules look like, but I don't think they can build 25k system(s) a day. Unless of course the systems are sitting there almost completely built waiting on CPU's from the supplier....Oh wait the supplier isn't Moto... That can't be it then.

Regards,

Added Plural to 25k System...Should have read 25k systems
And of Course I am one of those who will be mad.

All I want for labor day is my dualie....Whell that and the day off so I can play with it.

Me and my buddy went to our apple store yesterday to check out the g5's there, they had a 1.6 there to play with. The thing does look incredible. i wasn't quite blown away by the speed or anything on it, though i'm waiting for dual 2.0's in stores and i'll play with one, then buy one.

Anyway, my question is one that was asked earlier in this post. For anyone that has a g5 already, does it have a coupon, or anything in there, like a rebate for panther or anything like that? if there isn't, that's kinda b.s.

ya know, he's suprisingly ugly, dreadfully ugly actually, but i dont hold it against him, he got me into macs, so i guess i can't hold it against him (that post was by my buddy if you didn't guess)

anyway,

Has anyone gotten a g5 and does it have a certificate or what?!

If only Apple had a competitor

I'm on the phone with Dull, and their Dual 3.06 Xeon can't seem to come close to the price on a new Dual 2.0 G5.

So it makes me feel a little bit better.

Apple threw me a bone to hold my order until (hopefully) it ships in September.

WARNING: Don't order any upgrade parts until you actually SEE the machine working in your house/office.
