Practically nothing we as individuals would be able to do would really result in much change with respect to any of this, so aiming for that is rather pointless any way you go about it. But at least by coming to places like this you are heard on some level. It's at least more than essentially doing nothing or what effectively amounts to nothing (voting with your wallet).

Come on C DM, this really is a pessimistic view... If everyone thinks this way, then how will things ever change... Are we supposed to put up with status quo?

It's simply realistic point of view. Things can change of those that have the power decide to change them or enough people influence those in power to do it (one way or another). Short of perhaps very few exceptions where much more widespread, public, and supported by the press outcry would be involved, when it comes to fairly inconsequential (as far as overall societal importance goes) things like personal technology it's practically a given that nothing would happen and that's simply nothing more or less than just reality.

I am definitely NOT teaching my children that they cannot make a difference in this world!!

Don't forget Steve Jobs was alone in his convictions, and I am sure he was ridiculed and put down when he first started off. But in the end, this one man did make a difference to how personal technology (aka smartphones) are widely used today.

Sorry - but let's just say we agree to disagree on this point...

Craig Federighi also attests that one individual can make a difference. In this case for the worse. Since he is at helm iOS has gone downhill in terms of smoothness and reliability.

I think he has knack for hairdos though. May be he should dive himself into hairdressing full time and leave the iOS position for somebody more demanding and less prone to tolerate glitches like the scrolling stuttering that i face daily on my iPhone 6.

If you want to send a message, your wallet and this forum are your two best friends, no one consumer will ever win a wallet vote with a corporation but you have to do what's best for you.

If you want to apply what I said to something else, feel free, but that's certainly you taking something and applying it to something unrelated.

Except your vote with the wallet won't make a difference as demonstrated before. Either way more than likely things won't change unless a whole ton more people are doing the same thing. But in one case you are cutting off the nose to spite the face without anyone even knowing why, so to say, while in the other you are voicing your opinion and discussing it with others.

Ok Sir - all noted.....

Experts are humans, just like you and me, and have their own likes/dislikes as much as anyone else. And what they write is just an OPINION.. Hell even the so called experts amongst themselves have disagreements over any iOS platform they chose to critique... Remember the so-called experts who said iPad and iPhones would bomb?

This thread isn't about iPhones or iPads. It's about iOS7 and iOS8's design. Design experts in advertising criticized Apple's system font as being too thin. Apple turned tail and changed the system font. Did you forget that? But it was just their opinion, right?

I'm sure Apple has a social media harvesting process in place that aggregates comments and goes into a feedback process. They do what they want in the end but strive to better their products.

Who knows why they change certain things can't say it's one cause and effect. I don't think however the overall look and feel of iOS 7/8 is going away any time soon.

And you must have seen Apple owning up to it, and also they changed the fonts because of the criticism from these design experts?

Is it something that you think happened OR is it just your opinion about what happened?

Unlike you, I'm remembering something that actually happened:

When it comes to design, Apple has in the past been characterised - in both positive and negative terms - as perfectionist control freaks. But here's a clear sign that's no longer the case. With the release of the third beta of iOS 7, it's responded to widespread criticism among designers of its typography - and replaced the strikingly thin system font Helvetica Neue Light altogether. Downloading the new version of the iOS 7 beta now sets the main font as the thicker Helvetica Neue Regular.

So far the response has been a positive one from the design community. As Marco Arment, creator of Instapaper, argues in this blog post: "Light weights look cool (more so at larger sizes) and work well in advertising and logos, but are generally harder to read. The system font’s most important job is to be legible to as many people as possible in as many conditions as possible, so the previous choice was simply a bad design choice."

If something as fundamental as a system font can be changed at this stage then two things are clear: Apple is clearly listening to designers, and the design of iOS 7 is clearly not set in stone. Is there anything else you'd like to see changed before the full release? We'd love to hear your views in the comments below...

More from Erik Spiekermann. Turn the captions on and read that yes, he has met Ives and talked him out of stuff.

He's also better than Scott Forstall... as a comedian. Maybe iOS 7/8 lack of smoothness and reliability is some kind of inside joke? Who knows.

Using a 5s, came from a blackberry storm; which I had for almost four years.

Hmm... Your iPhone 5s was originally shipped with iOS 7 and before that you had Blacberry Storm for almost 4 years. Maybe you haven't used much iOS before iOS 7 to spot some differences? I'm just trying to see your point of view and there's nothing wrong if you are happy with IOS7/8. I'm not... Well, maybe iOS 7.1.2 was ok.

I like the guy but not his work, at least in what concerns iOS 7/8. But IMHO, worse than the bugs, is the lack of taste and quality that took over iOS design under Ive's lead. I did not expect that from him, but honestly iOS 7/8 looks like a bad joke.

Forstall, please return!!!! ;)

I think he's good at presentations; not boring at all. After sloooow Tim Cook he brings energy to the stage. But if iOS 9 isn't any better I may have lost all confidence in his abilities as iOS leader.

Well I bought an iPad 2 when it first came out...does that count? And I remember the various updates that broke things and killed battery life with iOS 5/6 and 7.

Except that a record million of iPhone 6 was sold as a bad joke. Forstall is not returning.

These people think their opinions should trump the majority. Apple just had the biggest corporate quarter in US history. People are speaking with their wallets. And what their saying is ios 7 and 8 are just fine. There was no mass exodus of people leaving the iPhone when iOS 7 or 8 was released.

It takes years for a bad OS to have an impact on sales. Recent measures were taken by apple to increase short term sales, like the addition of iPhone sizes for all tastes and the expansion to the huge asian markets. This had a good result but, even so, market share is much lower than what it was 2 or 3 years ago.

Most people who buy iPhones now are either new to iOS, or had a pre-iOS 7 phone. Apple is still taking advantage of the good reputation that iOS traditionally had, but the impact of a bad OS will slowly become more visible in the future.

I still hope Apple will redisgns iOS before while there is still time!

LoL... now that's a good one. :D
I wish Apple could explain what caused this downturn in performance. Additional backgroud services? Less available RAM from the puny 1GB of RAM? Gremlins?

Ok. Point conceded. You were right. I was wrong..

I'm not trying to win anything. I just want people to remember that Apple does do things wrong sometimes. Honestly, I'm shocked Apple listened to designers. I started trying to convince myself that it wasn't so bad. If my eyes are straining it doesn't bother me much. The bright colors aren't so bad. It's kinda like being in Disneyland.

@everyone
I still don't accept that text should replace buttons. Open the App Store. Scroll to the button. You should see 3 rows:
"Apps Made By Apple"
"Parents Guide to iTunes"
"Learn more blah..."

Followed by 3 bonafide buttons:
Redeem | Send Gift
<apple_id>

At the very bottom of the page there is a "Terms and Conditions>" hyperlink. This is obviously a hyperlink because of the trailing ">".

By looking at these items, does anyone know by observation, what each item does besides "something"? Maybe it's supposed to be obvious that the items in blue keep you within the app, while the buttons take you to the iTunes store.

Taking a lesson from the car manufacturers, BMW has been bashed for years for various things...yet on the whole the last few years, it leads the segment even though it's cars are poorly designed, expensive to maintain, not very reliable, etc (according to the internet that is).

Everybody makes mistakes look at windows 8 and Vista. Even Microsoft bungled those after being in the business for 30 years.

But I like IOS 8 much better than IOS 6.

Lol! I assume you got rid of it in the meantime...I have an iPad 2 with iOS 8 and apart from looking ugly as hell, it is almost unusable. I couldn't resist the iOS upgrade urge, but I regret it so much. I would install iOS 6 back this minute if I could...I still remember the first time I used it looked so good!!!

No, I still have the iPad 2 running 8.1.3 and it runs as well as 7.1.2. Very pleased that an old device is still supported. As far as the comment about the look and feel of iOS 8, it's head and shoulders above iOS 6. the iPad 2 is my workhorse. Ironic how one persons workhorse is another's unusable.
