There's a difference between transparency and theft of intellectual property. I think Apple will sue the hell out of them.

They didn't steal any intellectual property. I didn't know taking pictures of lost material was illegal.

PS I don't know if you caught this but APPLE LOST THE DEVICE ON THEIR OWN ACCORD, the guy tried to return it before 'this' happend. But due to their arrogance, nothing came out of it. It's apples fault any way you look at it.

all that metal is gonna kill reception, and since i find the 3g to struggle in marginal reception areas as it is, this phone will blow outside of major metro areas. It was fun while it lasted Apple but I dont think ill go beyond the 3g

This all seems pretty well orchestrated. And if it isn't, what damages have there been? Increased anticipation for a product?

Because after 2 years with my iPhone the battery is pretty much shot.

Yeah but, why would you care? Aren't you going to upgrade every couple of years anyway?

Unless you;re handing it down I guess.

I already know my 3G is destined to be my new outdoor music hub. It's the deal of a lifetime; own an iphone for 2 years, and it becomes a free iPod Touch

Can't believe they didn't dig far enough to find out what processor is inside..... seems like close to the most important thing

I undersand this but then I pay Apple's price. Also, I can't carry a spare. So no, I don't find these two things to be one in the same. I'd like a battery I can swap myself. I don't need to be tied to Apple any more than I already am. Now, if they can somehow give me the iPad battery in an iPhone then **** it, I'm there!

To be honest, there's so many external chargers out there now this argument is pretty moot. If you're really that desperate for a longer battery, buy one of these: http://fastmac.com/iv.php

I'm really hopin Apple doesn't continue to wait around to officially release this thing, me want now and so do the masses :)

LOL.

One, I don't know why anyone thought Apple would use a user-replacable battery.

Two, why does gizmodo keep fortifying their criminal acts with additional news stories. Dissembling the device... they are idiots.

Rant.

Are you people serious? You go to macrumors, engadget, wherever for tech rumors, reviews, and entertainment. You go to these sites hoping to find even the smallest bit of news/leak about upcoming apple products, especially the iphone. Then the IPHONE 4G, one of the most anticipated phones of all time gets leaked and people are complaining? Ummm..thats pretty much best case scenario when you log on to one of these sites, looking for news/rumors. People need to get off their freakin high horse. Gizmodo is a tech entertainment BLOG, and you're siding with apple? The same apple that will make you wait/waste months of your life in misery waiting for a new mbp with not even the slightest hint or clue of when it will come out. TUAW is the worst however, iphone 4g gets leaked/taken apart and they're talkin about the fruit ninja app. What self righteous *******.

No the point isn't moot. Not when you consider the basis of wanting the ability to just use a batter and swap it out if it dies and you have no power. I just want to carry the phone and talk until the battery dies. Swap the battery for new and go. I don't want to fidget with other devices if I don't have to. Notwithstanding the fact that I own one of those similar devices and it has saved me a time or two. Again, if I can have it great, but we all know the iPhone won't ever have this feature. I just said I wanted it and that it is not news that there is no user replaceable battery. Shocker alert.

Just me thinking that Gizmodo are being pricks about it? I wouldn't like my iPhone pulled apart to find out whats in it, then they give it back to Apple as if they did nothing wrong.

Don't think they will be invited to any more press events by Apple.

Gizmodo lost my respect back when they were prancing through a CES event with one of those "TV turn off" boxes, disrupting product demonstrations by remotely turning off everybody's displays. I thought they were tech journalists, not frat boys.

Nothing they've done thus far has yet dissuaded me from that opinion.

Oh my

It feels like this poor iPhone is being cut open like an alien visiting the Earth. I just hope people at Apple aren't pissed off more than they already were. I think Apple expected something like this the minute they knew that device was lost.

I don't think Apple is gonna loose anything out of this. They already have amazing dominance with iPhone and with just a magic marketing campaign they can get the hype going in June.

I really don't see why everyone is hating gizmodo for taking the product apart, don't you want to know what's inside? Power to the consumer I say, the more we know the better. I don't know about you but im a fan of complete transparency.

Gizmodo knew that the phone was Apple's property. Gizmodo should have known that they may have been purchasing STOLEN property. That Apple would definitely not want any information about the phone released yet. And that by posting images of the internal details of the phone that they significantly decreased the value of Apples substantial investment in iPhone engineering.

I agree that I'd like to know what's in the next iPhone, but for the moment, my curiosity is irrelevant; it's Apple's property, it's up to Apple to decide what information is released and when. I definitely agree that transparency is essential to many situations, but so is privacy.

I suspect that Gizmodo broke California law, and injured Apple's business in the process. If laws were broken, I hope they are prosecuted. Likewise I hope the Apple sues Gizmodo as this was a serious violation of Apple's intellectual property rights.

It's nice to have confirmation on the non-user-replaceable battery. Most people realized Apple was not about to do that when their entire line or portables emphasizes long battery life due to the built-in technology.

They didn't steal any intellectual property. I didn't know taking pictures of lost material was illegal.

Taking pictures is not illegal. But in California, tearing it apart a lost item to take pictures of it is very clearly illegal.

PS I don't know if you caught this but APPLE LOST THE DEVICE ON THEIR OWN ACCORD, the guy tried to return it before 'this' happend. But due to their arrogance, nothing came out of it. It's apples fault any way you look at it.

Again, in California if "nothing came out of it" the finder is required to give it to the police. Reselling it is clearly theft under California law. And since Giz knew the story, that makes them plainly guilty of receiving stolen property.

I predict Apple will not complain until after they have announced the product. Then they will press charges.

I'm hoping for a custom apple chip too!

That would be VERY nice maybe the same A4 Chip in the iPad. I've been looking at this pictures since they posted this weekend. I know the resolution is supposedly better (Gizmodo guessed from looking at the connect to iTunes screen), but I think it looks darker when placed next to the 3GS.

What I'm really hoping for is an OLED screen.

As for all of you gripping about the non-user replaceable battery. I'd much rather have it that way considering the better would more than likely have to be smaller to compensate for the removable back and you would loose sheer strength if it was user replaceable. . . THINK ABOUT THAT!

Because it's Apples fault for not keeping tighter restrictions on a "secret" device, if it meant that much then it should've been under more security.

made me laugh :D

knowing our luck, Apple will withdraw this design now, and we'll see a new spoon-shaped phone in June that is going to revolutionise the breakfast industry or something. :(

By the looks of it, Apple already did this when the iMac G3s came out

ispoon7oc.jpg

Whilst I doubt they'll tread on old failed ground, they did turn the Newton into the iPhone, so who knows, maybe we'll see a new self breakfast making gadget that has a iPad built in, but can't do anything the iPad can, so just calculator, clock, weather and stocks. MAN I'D SO BUY THIS.

Ok, so why would Apple bother to wait till late May now to announce it? Since the ATT vacation block is for all of June.

This was one of the main reasons why I believed the 'leak' was a fake because the battery was removable... now that this is true, I have no choice but to believe that it was a real prototype.

Evidently. The metal cage is a bit weird too, but here's what I'm thinking... the back is made of this zirconia stuff (Apple filed a patent for use of this in 2006), which is great for the signal but terrible for heat dissipation -- zirconia is actually used for thermal insulation on jet engines. If you made a MacBook Pro case from zirconia, the insides would melt. iPhones can get pretty hot too, and now all those components are jammed into a tiny enclosure sealed off by a zirconia wall that stops the heat from going anywhere. So it seems that all the metal on the inside was put there to drag heat out of the components and out through the aluminum border around the sides (where your fingertips will be when you're making a call ;))
