Well, only if none of the far superior features in the 17 are missed. Which I find hard to believe for most people. Maybe the elderly.

I wouldn't call an extra camera, promotion and magsafe “superior features” that worth the price jump.

I literally just talked to someone in his 20s upgrading from a 12 that's running on fumes. He wanted to do the 16e but uses the ultra-wide, so he picked the 16. He said he had no interest in the 17 and didn't care about the extra features.

I also just talked to a family member (a few weeks ago) in her 70's who just upgraded from a 16 Pro and said she wanted the 17 Pro b/c she liked the extra zoom and just always likes having the latest/greatest. 🤷‍♂️

Are they outliers? Maybe. But anecdotes are anecdotes. Phones are a very personal thing - some people treat them only as tools that they just need to work in their basic form, others treat them as an extension of themselves as a person. Age might play a factor on where a person falls on that spectrum, but it's not a given by any means.

Regular use for me is holding it in my right hand with my pinky giving some support, so it would block the right speaker placement. I guess if you are left-handed or just prefer using your non-dominant hand then the base 17 is better placement.
Maybe I'm weird, but I hold the phone from the sides, with no part of my hand under the phone. Neither speaker is blocked. I have a 17 Pro, and the sound comes out from the left, a fact I wouldn't have known had I not read this thread and checked.

💯
I hold my 17 Pro Max the same way and have done so with most of my smartphones.
So I find it strange that the speaker placement on the left is an issue.

It’s not the gorgeous 120Hz display, it’s not the sweet color options, it’s not even the INCREDIBLE value proposition…

IT’S THE BOTTOM SPEAKER STILL BEING ON THE RIGHT SIDE.🙌🏼
Did you try charging your phone with USB-C and try listening if there is a static jitter sound? All of the units have them. Not so sure if this is the best iPhone.

Do you have OCD? Because this seems like such a non-issue in reality... I didn't even know this was a thing until you just said it.

Yet it was one of the first things I noticed on mine. When using it in portrait my pinky rests on the bottom, partially blocking the speaker (as I tend to use my phone in my left hand). And then it's even more apparent when watching videos in landscape.

It’s not a dealbreaker by any means. I’m just curious what Apple’s motive was for moving it.

People use their phones to record videos and if you have it attached to a charging cable you will record this noise along with it.

Ahhhhhh I can see how that would be quite an issue for some! I personally record audio using wired EarPods or a wireless mic so I haven’t noticed any audio issues myself.

hey there,
since you have a 17, do you think i should get a 16 pro or 17? What would your say be on this
Does 17 feel premium enough?

The 17 feels (and looks) WAY more solid and premium than the $799 price would suggest. And the battery life is quite a bit better compared to the 16 Pro so my vote would be for the 17. But you really can’t go wrong with either, and I miss the titanium days already.😭😭😭

The only factors that would cause me to recommend the 16 Pro over the 17 are:
  • Extra telephoto is extremely important to you
  • Price for the 16 Pro is the same or cheaper than the 17
  • 16 Pro is new or practically new with regard to battery health

i am convinced on 17 tbh, double storage for the price compared to 16 pro in my country, also the new selfie camera seems sucha upgrade, would miss the 3 camera titanium design tho. Fast charging is a bonus I do not wanna ignore fs

the 16 pro I am getting is slightly expensive in my country, new tho, main concern for me was 17 doesn't look pricey like 16 pro, but should be fine

The new front-facing camera is a really nice quality of life upgrade. I don't take many selfies but I use it all the time on video calls. I went from 13 Pro to 17 Pro. I would get the base regular 17 if I could do it again, though. It's such a great phone.

(I was taking 2x zoomed videos of our kids at a school play yesterday. The videos are a huge upgrade over my 13 Pro or even my wife's 15 Pro. I wonder whether the Pro helped with its Telephoto lens at 2x. I just don't know enough about this stuff.)

It shouldn't have. The Telephoto doesn't kick in until you get to 4x. So you're still using the main lens cropped in at 2x. In theory the regular 17 would've given you almost identical video quality at 2x - I say "almost" b/c the regular 17 does have a different lens and lacks a LIDAR scanner which helps in those lower light situations.

Thanks for that info. In a thread about the regular 17, I didn't want to be a distraction. I hope our exchange will help others who may read this with similar lingering questions.

I'm curious now, recent events is allowing me to get two mobile phone lines in the upcoming months. So, I'd figure why not use this as a means to build my credit since I failed to do that in my 20s (long story I don't feel like getting into).

I'm picking the 17 after using my SE 2nd Gen for so long when I make the switch. If I remember right, I'd be jumping from iPhone 11 to 17 basically? I barely use my smartphones when I'm in the house since I have my Mac but I don't know if I'll feel the difference besides the screen size. I do take a lot of pictures and I've never had a phone with a dedicated phone button, just how good are the flagship cameras compared to the SE?

The 17 base is 'perhaps' the iPhone with the best quality/price ratio ever (imho), and this is a problem for many...

Yup speaker on 17 is impressive (coming from a 13PM). However I find the 17 (or more likely ios26) the worst ever iPhone/software to type with & focus / set brightness pictures. Just truly awful to the point I want to throw the thing at a wall out of sheer f’&@in anger. Also screen is so sensitive I find it impossible to pick up or carry in Hand without it taking picture, starting workout trying to unlock & therefore locking me out as it doesn’t detect my face etc.

So in summary it’s good at a few things but utterly ship at many many of the basic things that should be fully ironed out by now. Just poor design process nowadays imho. Too may swipe functions ruin experience too

The 17 is a very impressive phone this year indeed I would have liked to have gotten it but I picked up a 16e back in April because the battery on my 14 just couldn’t hold a long charge do to some thing with iOS 18.4 that just drained the battery on my 14 so said the heck with it went got the 16e for a few reasons and it has been a good phone and does what I need and more and no need to spend more money to get the 17 I will wait and see what the iPhone 18 will bring and go from there!

To be honest, I use it like my pervious like you and I just noticed it after reading about it here.
So no issue for me neither, also since I use the APP most of the time.
