$799 - iPhone 17 - 6.3" screen, 256 GB, dual camera, stereo speakers, good battery life
$999 - iPhone Air - 6.5" screen, 256 GB, single camera, mono speaker, middling battery life
$1099 - iPhone 17 Pro - 6.3" screen, 256 GB, triple camera, stereo speakers, very good battery life

The Air just seems like a bad value all around. In terms of value, IMO it's 17 > 17 Pro >> Air.

BTW, the Air is the first iPhone that has been released with just a mono speaker in a decade. Even the 16e is stereo.
Great take on why the iPhone Air exists

It doesn’t have an ugly carbuncle stuck to its back!

I’m tempted to upgrade to the 17, but also tempted to hold off until the 18. Apple Intelligence is still MIA and they may pull the “some new features only supported on iPhones 18 and above” in next year’s Apple Intelligence reveal.

What's all the fuss about ProMotion?

I can't see any difference when scrolling on the iPhone 13 without and the iPad 13" M1 with ProMotion.

ProMotion is noticeably smoother and lots of people prefer it. I personally don't care much though. I own both ProMotion and 60 Hz iDevices, and I easily notice the difference in smoothness, but I'm perfectly happy with 60 Hz.

Why is the battery compromised? It’s basically the same battery performance as in iPhone 16 PRO

And who cares about stereo speakers? Is the 10 cm stereo separation that important to you? Mono can still go loud if that’s your concern.
A lot of people keep quoting this as if its gospel, and its from Apples site so fair enough (video watching hours), but in real world battery usage I am almost certain the iPhone Air will be noticeably inferior to the 16 Pro.

I think it's kind of telling that they released a new external battery that works ONLY with the new Air, and they introduced a new battery life spec that requires this battery.

17 is easily the best value now. The Pro gives you telephoto, better battery life (although the 17 is still very good), “pro” chip (good luck telling the difference), proraw photo option, and thunderbolt/usb 3. I think of that list, a lot of users are not going to notice anything but the telephoto lens. Pretty bad value for an extra $300.

I think once people see/feel the iPhone Air in person, sales will pick up.

Personally, I would gladly sacrifice some of the features lost for hand comfort.

I will say that I initially thought the orange Pro model looked goofy, but after seeing some closer footage of it in Mr Mobiles video, I think it looks really cool.

Storage price isn't the only thing that adds to the cost of the phone obviously. The vapor chamber, the better camera's, the separate chip every year, bigger batteries, ...

It's literally not catching up if every year it gets last years innovations of the pro. It's staying exactly where it was: one year behind with one less camera.

Well, yes, it'll be a year behind.

You can be damn sure they made that decision based on a LOT of data that tells them exactly how many people are willing to pay that, how many sales they'll lose and how many more they can make by the price increase and where the exact sweet spot lies. From their perspective it's definitely not a mistake.
It get the most important innovations when there are; such as promotion.
Plus some new features of the latest Pro model.

The only few pro-exclusive features are scarce and Apple struggles to find new ones.

Sure they have data but knowledges of the past cannot always predict the future

I bought the Pro Max specifically for the telephoto... plus ultra-wide. The 17 at least has the ultra-wide. The Air has neither, just like the budget 16e. IOW, the Air is like a gussied up 16e.

I will say the lightness of the 16e is great though, and the Air weighs the same as the 16e. However, the iPhone 17 is not heavy at all at just 10 grams more than the 16e. The noticeably heavy ones are the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max.

I'm OK with the weight of the 17 Pro Max though, since it's roughly the same weight as my current 12 Pro Max.

Its basically a 16 Pro minus the Telephoto lens with the latest A19 and in better colours.

Its a no brainer.

After having a pro upgrade for years since the whole “pro” thing began I’m thinking the iPhone 17 will suit me better I’m not a movie producer I just need a phone for the day to day life and I don’t think the pro is aimed at us “average users anymore” when there used to feel a big difference between the two models the gap is feeling less and less making it not worth it when I could upgrade twice almost for the price of the pro.

It's thicker/heavier/more expensive are compromises though. Maybe ones you're willing to make, but you can't say the pro's and pro maxes don't have compromises. Every engineering decision is a compromise.
Yes, although that’s true I still believe that most will opt for the regular 17 or one of the Pros

Cheapest + more features than the AIR.
It has some features more than the air, but the air does have 12 gb of ram opposed to the iPhone 17’s 8gb. The air does have the A19 Pro versus the regular A19. Also, the air has ceramic shield on both the front and back. Only on the front on the 17. But the other main reason people are picking up the air is because of the hardware features. The thinness and the titanium polished frame. It has the aesthetics over the 17. This is a product that Apple has never done before. An alternative for people who don’t want a bulky phone this year. I think it will be a hit but time will tell.

I actually kind of want the regular 17 just due to the lighter weight. The 17 pro is now at like 7.3oz, approaching half of a fricking pound for a phone.

My AT&T plan lets me get both the pro and regular 17 for free though, so seems silly to not take advantage and get the pro. Really only care about the camera system.

These 17's in general seem great, but the 18s next year will probably also be a pretty large leap forward due to:
- 2nm lithography for even more efficiency (we've been on 3nm for quite a while now)
- introduction of C2/N2 chips for even more efficiency
- A20 will likely have some serious AI optimization areas of the SoC

Hardly any rational reason to spend more for the Air or Pro.
Also, this year, the Pro looks.... divisive to say the least.
It’s divisive, but you have to admit that it is different on the back from the previous 4 iterations. And not just a little different, except for the three camera array you have a plateau instead of just a box design for the cameras. And then the two tone effect on the lower half. I like it.
