For all we know, it could be some rich dude who's happy to unload it not caring about the price. Edition buyers are likely rich enough to afford multiple Edition units. However, they'll most certainly have the worst resale value due to them becoming obsolete in a few short years (unlike a $10,000 Rolex that will last a lifetime).

To be fair, a Rolex only lasts a lifetime when you get an approximately $700-$1000 service about every 5-10 years, where many of the internal components are often replaced. Also, most Rolex watches also take a depreciation hit when purchased new, although surely the Edition's depreciation will be much more.

Well, the point is a Rolex can last a lifetime whereas you can't update an Edition, and this is reflected in the resale prices.

I keep hearing that many Rolex watches retain their values after many years, but only because they keep raising the prices of new Rolex models. However, this may not hold true in the future when manufacturers of luxury mechanicals acquire the status of pocketwatch manufacturers as more people switch to luxury smartwatches (my personal prediction).

All around there is going to be shock when people go to sell their watches. It is not an iPhone or an iPad. The market is much more niche. I think you will be lucky to get half from your sport or watch after the next few months.
After purchasing a new 42mm gold sport last week I sold my 38mm blue sport on ebay within 15 minutes for only $50 less than I paid for it. Quite good if you ask me. I was thrilled!

I was watching a 42mm Edition model on eBay here in Aust over the weekend. RRP is $17000AUD here and it sold for $6100AUD. The seller also had it listed on Gumtree. Less than half! Wow!

Agreed. I'm in the process of selling mine now. Rolex makes something like a million watches per year, too, so it isn't as if they're rare.

Just sold my 42MM Space Grey sport with a scratched screen and a couple of micro scratches on the case for $275 on CraigsList, within an hour of posting it. I probably could have asked for $300 judging by the amount of interested buyers I had within minutes of posting it.

Not too bad for a less than mint 5 month old watch.

You shouldn't be purchasing a Rolex if $700-$1,000 service every 5-10 years is an issue!

I just got three watches back from the jeweler last week. Worth every penny.

Maybe it is the sports that are easy to sell then. It was crazy hard to sell the SS model.

As the saying goes, if its too good to be true, then it generally is.

I didn't say it was an issue. Simply stating facts for those who don't know about the watches. Saying a Rolex lasts a lifetime is about like saying a vintage Porsche lasts a lifetime, in that it does still require service and upkeep, which a lot of people don't realize.

Oddly enough, I've been planning on buying a vintage Porsche, and, now that I'm not wearing them anymore, I'll probably sell all of my mechanical watches and put it towards the car.

I think for most edition buyers, $10-17K is pocket change to them and resell value isn't really something they're all that concerned about. Either way, whatever they sell it for, it's still pocket change.
