Installed the 830 512GB and have been using over the past few days. Well, unlike most people out there on the interwebz, i'm not impressed with this drive at all. In fact it is downright disappointing after reading all the over the top hype. I've read everything from 'night/day difference' to 'blow me away'. Well based on that I think the performance sux. So it's probably the last time I listen to a bunch of overly excited kids.

I'm running a Crucial M4 in my mid 2009 MBP and the performance boost did "blow me away." Programs take half the time to open, or less. Data copies about 4 times as fast.

When I compared the read and write speeds from my old 250GB 5400RMP drive and my new 256GB SSD using Blackmagic disk bench, these numbers make sense. My old drive had was about 40/35 for read/write. My new drive was about 260/200 read write(limited by SATA II of course).

I bought a 256GB Samsung 830 to put into my laptop just to see if it made a difference. Unfortunately, it didn't; I found that my limiting factor was really SATA II, so I dropped it into my desktop PC and I notice the speed difference there too.

Anyway, I guess I'm saying that if you're not noticing an immediate difference with your setup, something may be wrong.

File copy from partition to partition on same drive maxes out at 125MB/sec for 1GB+ video files. The magnetic disk it replaced did 70MB/sec. Copy large application from DMG image maxes out at 55MB/sec. Applications launch a little bit faster nothing snaps open. MS word docs still take forever, google earth takes forever, Toast takes too long still. I expected Finder 'Calculate all sizes' to be smoking fast but this as well not remarkable at all.

Granted the disk is connected to a 3 Gigabit bus, but i'm doubtful this is a limitation, since nothing I do with this disk gets anywhere close to maxing out the bus. The Trim app doesn't improve performance.

Did you do a fresh OS install on the SSD? Those speeds are not what an SSD should be at. If you cloned the existing drive to the SSD you can get a very slow SSD. Doing a fresh OS install and then migrating the old files over to the SSD is what you want to do.

Download and run XBench if you haven't and post your speeds here.

Yeah that SSD should give you around 200-250MB/s for read/writes in real world tests with a 3 Gigabit connection. If i remember correctly those are the speeds that I've seen for 2010 models.

Thanks dude. Yeah I just cloned from hard drive. I must admit the system is very sloppy at the moment and in need of a fresh rebuild. I'll wait until I get hold of a late 2011 17" MBP and a new Samsung 840 Pro to do a new fresh system install. I bought this 512 GB 830 as a temp drive to test out, i'll handball it to another machine when I get my new machine/drive.

I'm on a 2009 mbp 2,8 c2d and recently purchased a 256 GB samsung 830. I'm thinking the speeds I'm getting aren't what it should be. Shouldn't I be getting around 300 read/write?

The read-speed looks about right. You will not get 300MB/s with SATAII.
The write-speed looks a bit low. I get ~200MB/s write speed on my 2009 MBP from the same drive.

Newegg has the Samsung 840 Pro on sale till Wed. I think $269 for the 256, the 830 is $189.

Is the 840 PRO worth the extra $80?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147193

Probably will get this one, even thought I want the 512, but at $599, that is to much. The 830 512 is $499.

The extra money for a pro is only worth it if you need the extra computing power. If all you do is edit videos/pics every once and a while like me then the extra money is not worth it. Oh, and the 512GB standard 840 is available for $399 on Amazon. Speeds are good 340r/540w, I would buy this in a heart beat if I had $399 to burn. Moved my Samsung 830 SSD from my 'aging' Dell XPS M1330 to a new MBP 9,2 and these are the results I'm getting in Blackmagic Speed test:

It put a big happy grin on my face:D:D:D

My god this thing is wicked fast! We are talking crazy fast...

I have just installed a 256 gb version tonight in my late 2011 MacBook Pro 15" - I installed it instead of my DVD (Never, ever use it) and everything is running like melting butter...

iPhoto, iTunes, Office 2011 and all the other "heavy" apps, are launching before my icons are hitting the dock on the first jump (back in standard hdd-days, the jumping icon could be 5 seconds before the app would start to show it self, and another 5 to be useable)

All joy...

Well after using this setup for some time, I must say I have been looking for some solution for the issues I have:

- VERY often the system freezes up - starts with a app freeze (haven't found a single thing I am doing to cause it) and then beachball - the mouse is still active and will continue to be, but the system never returns to order.

I am experiencing this a LOT at the moment - couple of times a day at least when using the system a lot.

Any ideas? When late 2011 MBP can it be the fact that it's sitting in a bay in my Superdrive's spot?

Hey guys,

Bought this 830 off of Ebay for my iMac and it doesn't look like the typical 830 series SSD I've seen. It doesn't have the brushed finish or the orange corner stating the size of the drive.

Here's what I got in the mail. Any info on what I got looking at the pictures?

Looks like an OEM version (taken out of another computer).

If the price was good, then you have no worries.

However, good luck getting warranty with that thing. OEM warranties are covered with the whole system, not individual parts.

I figured that was what it was. I suppose that's not too bad. The price was good but they didn't state it in the ad though. Oh well, better than getting scammed.

Thanks man.

yeah, hate when sellers don't describe items properly!!!! Unfortunately, it's becoming more and more common:( Re. ur Samsung SSD, you should be fine 830 series is a pretty reliable workhorse.

That almost looks like one of the Pre-production units that are sent to reviewers and testers etc before mass production actually begins.
Check out the age and current firmware. Update the firmware should you need to.

Thanks for the tip. How would I go about checking that info?

Okay, I replaced my SSD with my HDD and downloaded HDD Fan Control.

Soo.. I ran some tests on BlackMagic and I don't think these speeds are right?

My boot time is approx. 15-20 seconds now compared to over 45 seconds with the HDD.

Also, when I shut down.. I get stuck at the grey screen with the rotating wheel (not colorful beach ball). I then do a hard reset.

Any suggestions?

Edit: This is a late 09 iMac. 3.06 GHz. 12GB ram.

I know I'll only get SATA II speeds but is this a little low?

these are the hd that samsung provide to other companies like dell, toshiba to install in their laptops. Pretty much the same drive except different firmware. You will get the same performance just a different look. Also you may have a hard time updating the firmware through and samsung magician tool.

Hey guys, just installed my 830 (128GB) into my MBP 13" Early 2011.

Installation was a breeze and installed a fresh copy of ML.

Also installed groth's TRIM enabler.

Write speeds are 326MB/S and Read Speeds are 426MB/S.

Anything to worry about? :(

Not sure if anyone's still interested in this thread anymore, but after living with my with 256GB 830 for a few months now, I have decided to let it ride along without TRIM. Here are three reasons:

  1. I have not noticed any perceivable differences in performance with TRIM enabled vs. TRIM disabled.
  2. (I guess #1's not 100% accurate because...) With TRIM enabled, my MBP would sometimes become unresponsive (keyboard/trackpad, beachball, etc.) - This never happend with TRIM disabled. And according to BlackMagic, not to mention my real-world experience, there was no perceivable speed improvement with TRIM enabled.
  3. With TRIM enabled, shutdowns could take up to 30 seconds; and with TRIM disabled, shutdowns take less than 5 seconds. (In either case, boot times were identical: approximately 10 seconds until I'm able to enter my password).
Since I leave my MBP powered on and active 100% of the time, I am confident that the SSD's garbage collection strategies are 'good enough' for how I use my laptop. Throughout the remaining useful life of either my MBP or its SSD, I plan to re-enable TRIM occasionally to see if it makes a difference, but for the reasons listed above, I doubt I'll keep it enabled for an extended period of time. It's great to have a choice!

I have installed 512gb samsung 830 in my mid-2009 MBP. Since I've upgraded my computer has freezed few times. It's never happened before.. Is it something quite commong after ssd upgrade??? Is there something I can do to prevent it? I have got TRIM enabled. RAM is 8gb. i have also got 1tb HDD in optical bay...

Hi can anyone help me with this freezing problem. Since I have installed samsung 830 freezing has become very common. When it freezes the 'force quit' key command also doesn't work. THe only way I can solve the problem is to switch off the macbook by pressing the power button for few seconds!!! My battery life has also reduced. Can somebody please help in simple terms what I can do to reduce/eliminate these freezing issues and increase battery life?

I'm on Lion at the moment. Do you think upgrading to mountain lion will sort this problem?
