Here are two 830 in RAID 0 on a La Cie 2Big Thunderbolt enclosure.

RAID 0 SSD

I've gotten 700 MB/s off a hackintosh. There must be a bottleneck with the thunderbolt SATA controller on the LaCie

My Samsung 830 is in the mail!! :) Should be here Thursday.
I have been doing a lot of reading. The jumpdrive is ready with ML, but I am unsure, is there a specific file I have to transfer to the ssd before I install?

Nope! Just boot from your ML USB (hold down the Option key as soon as you hear the chime), open up Disk Utility, format the SSD and proceed with the ML install!

I didn't even know this thread existed!

Bought a 256GB one two weeks ago; put it in early last week.

Everything is running amazingly well.

wow, just checked buy.com and my 830 will be delivered tomorrow!! now thats some fast service!

It did ship from like less than 20 miles away, but still 1 day turn around is still impressive!

From what I've read, yes. You can obviously test it now, before your new SSD arrives; and of course, this would be recommended.

I created a drive and booted to it. Everything seems good, but I am going to wait on my ram to arrive tomorrow to install the drive.

would it be ok to install from a back up since the computer is less than a week old, or is it still recommended to do a fresh intall?

I always do a fresh install since it provides an opportunity to start from scratch and install/restore only the things I really want or need, as opposed to restoring everything that has built up from the last fresh install, including any garbage that it may bring along. It's a little more time consuming, but in the end I believe it's worth it.

iTunes and iPhoto are a breeze -- just copy ~/Music and ~/Pictures from the backup. Of course, you should also grab ~/Documents and possibly ~/Movies. For your Applications, just copy what you use. If you have saved information and/or settings that you want restored, check in ~/Library/Application Support. There are other things in ~/Library that you may be interested in too, such as your Keychain, your Calendars, Mail, etc.

Again, it's a little more time consuming, but it the end, you'll be assured that your environment is as clean as a whistle!

Will the samsung 830 ssd work in my mid 2009 MacBook Pro 2.8 ghz model ? If it does not what model ssd is a better for my laptop ? Thanks in advance.

just upgraded in 2009 Macbook Pro 13inch

Just got my samsung 830 256gb drive from amazon and installed last night.

I just cloned the drive using a usb to sata adapter and it worked just fine.

My speeds aren't really all that great though. I asked this in another thread but no one responded so I'm hoping someone might help me here. I'm currently on EFI 1.6 firmware for my macbook pro (13inch 2.26 GHz model). I've heard some scary things about EFI 1.7 with regards to third party hard drives. But this is also apparently the only way I'll get Sata II speeds. I would just install the update but if something goes wrong the process to roll back to EFI 1.6 doesn't exactly seem easy...

Anyone with a 13inch 2009 Macbook Pro using this drive successfully with SataII speeds (or anyone who has had trouble with this particular model)?

It is just seeming right now that it isn't really worth the money for a small increase in speed...

It should work fine. I've got one on the way right now. Couldn't hold out for the price to drop any longer.

I'm running EFI 1.7 firmware on my mid 2009 MBP and have a Crucial M4 at the moment. I picked up a Samsung 830 and it should be here in a few days. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work. Here are the speeds I'm seeing with my M4 and EFI 1.7. If you're really worried about upgrading, I'll be testing the 830 and posting results when it arrives.

Thanks for the offer. I actually just upgrade the EFI to 1.7 and so far everything seems fine. I redid the disk speed test and I'm getting 198 write and like 230 read which seems about standard for Sata II.

I have to say that I'm not really sure what everyone is going on about with SSDs...Aside from a weird issue where my computer freezes briefly whenever I mount something using the usb ports everything feels about the same  I guess this is good since I was pretty happy with my computer's performance after clean installing ML anyway.

It does seem to wake from sleep a little faster which is nice. Now I just need to enable Trim.

Actually after a quick search I cant find my ML DMG or ZIP. Will I have to download it again from appstore, and if so will I have to pay again.
Hold down the R-button when you start, then you'll boot form the recovery disc on your HDD, and from that you can install ML on your SSD. No download required.

But otherwise, you bought ML on app store, so you can download it for free as many times as you like.

Trim when the disk has automatic garbage collection?

I have activated trim in OS X 10.8.2 for my Samsung 830 128 GB. I just read that the disk has automatic garbage collection, so my question is: Do we actually need trim support activated?

All SSDs do garbage collection and TRIM is simply a part of it that makes things a lot easier. The SSD will work without TRIM but TRIM ensures it can operate at the highest possible speeds.

I have installed 512gb samsung 830 in my mid-2009 MBP. Since I've upgraded my computer has freezed few times. It's never happened before.. Is it something quite commong after ssd upgrade??? Is there something I can do to prevent it? I have got TRIM enabled. RAM is 8gb. i have also got 1tb HDD in optical bay...

I've got ~500 hours logged with my new SSD, and I've experienced a few freezes -- between 5 and 10, I would say. I did a clean install of ML last July, and cloned my environment from the original spinning HD to the SSD earlier this month. I wasn't planning on doing another clean install any time soon, but if the freezing continues, I'll likely end up doing so to see if the freezing stops. The worst one, which happened earlier this week, lasted at least 10 seconds before the keyboard and/or trackpad became responsive.

Have you tried removing the SSD to see if the behavior occurs? It's a bit unlikely that the SSD is causing the issue, but I suppose anything is possible.

10 seconds!!! that's lucky... mine just becomes unresponsive and then I have to switch it off... it's like going back to windows. I never had to do that with my macbook pro before. I'm still on Lion 10.7.5. Do you think things might improve if I upgrade to ML?

The problem is EFI1.7 on those earlier machines. Either you have to replace the SATA cable with one not from Apple, or downgrade to EFI1.6. Or get an older SSD.
