Am I missing something? The design team has almost nothing to do with this. It's the same phone as the 8, which came out half a decade before.
The 2022 SE is aiming for a different market segment now than the iPhone 8 did in its day. The iPhone 8 64gb version was priced at $699 when released in 2017, the 2022 SE with 64gb is priced at $429 and has a faster processor.

I know what the iPhone 8 and the SE are. OP said "Apple design team is not asleep." They are using the same design, just like you mentioned. You are completely agreeing with me.

Yeah, great callouts here on that.
I find that I love the size of the mini, love that the screen is indeed bigger than that of the SE, while not being as huge as that of the 6.1" phones.... but that scrunched look is a bit frustrating- I did actually have to turn up my text size just a notch, whereas on my SE it is fine the way it is (even though it's a smaller screen) since the text is exactly as big as it is on much bigger phones- just less of it fits on a screen, so there is more scrolling that has to be done.

Do some of you find the SE screen much easier to use/look at as a result of this aspect ratio?

The SE has a 16:9 height to width screen ratio, the same as regular TVs.
The 13 mini has a screen ratio of 19.5:9; this is significantly taller than 16:9.
I feel the same way, I'd take a 16:9 or a 18:9 screen and make the phone less tall, 19.5:9 is a bit too much.

For the right mix of readability and portability, the 14 Plus is the best choice among current offerings. In the smallest form factor (though not to say small enough), the SE wins.

Is there any reason you skipped over the 6.1" screen sizes for the "smallest form" factor and jumped to the 14 Plus?
The iPhone 14 only weighs 6.07 Oz, it weighs just a little over an ounce less than the 8 Plus you said you have.
The 14 Pro (6.1"/non Max) weighs just slightly more than the 8 Plus.

14 Plus to SE is the literal most extreme leap in screen sizes.

Still enjoying my SE3 I got at launch. Mine is the midnight color too. My only gripe with the phone is the adequate battery. It’s not bad, but it’s not great either. Mine is at 96% health after 8 months. Battery is great in standby, texting, general web browsing…. but if you start doing heavy multitasking, video watching, etc…. it drops at a pretty quick pace. Outside of that, I love the phone.

Not a fan of face-id, so I got an SE3 256 Gb at launch. Still using my OG SE 64 GB as a music streamer and back up phone. It's on it's 4th battery lol. I am a light user and my SE3 is at 99% battery health. Great little device. Plan to use it for the next 5-6 years.

I'd probably call the SE3 a perfect device if it had a headphone jack. But without that, I'm still loyal to my iPhone 6S – which for all daily purposes is the same thing.
Why is the headphone jack such as issue? I've got a little adapter that plugs into the lightning port and has a standard headphone jack on the other end. I just leave my headphones pugged into it and plug the whole thing into the phone when I want to use headphones.

I don't even know if my iPhone 12 mini has a earphone jack?
nope!
the face ID is incredible and wish all my  thing had that!

One more thing to carry and plug-unplug. I want to swap the same jack between my laptop and phone at any time, since I am actually doing this a lot. And those adapters are way more flimsy than a solid port.

Welcome back to Macrumors sir. I missed you!
wow thank you!
how are you?

well apple rules!
I needed a phone in July, so I stuck a sweet deal on the 12 mini.

then the MBPro ribbon went so a new MBA M1
the new TV is great

that mini HomePod is incredible!
now I need advice on operating these products!

it is very nice not to usb a new Os or OCLP on a MacBook anymore!

Anyone who purchased a 2022 SE ... was the battery during the first week or so, pretty awful? I know any phone will go through some routines which will drain the battery during the first few days, but I purchased an SE Saturday and so far, the battery has been awful. It's dropping close to 2% every single hour just sitting in standby with no other use whatsoever. Is this normal for the first few days? I'm about to return it, it's so bad. Should I give it at least a week or so?

What did you have before?

That's not normal and could be just b/c it's new and still updating/indexing in the background. Mine will sit overnight and only drop a few percentage points (5 max), and it's a day 1 purchase.

It's a second phone for me. I also have an iphone 14 which gets great battery usage. I am going to give it a couple of days then return it if things don't improve. I did migrate everything from my 14, so there IS a lot of indexing being done I suppose.

But, "sit overnight and only drop a few percentage points (5 max)?" My 14 can sit overnight and halfway through the following day and not drop even 1%. Maybe I'm expecting too much from the SE?

So a followup. I've had the phone since Saturday. Yesterday I turned off almost all Siri Suggestions, lowered the screen brightness and left the SE overnight without pressing the home button to turn on the screen. I have no social media running in the background. From 8:15pm last night till 8:15am this morning, the phone remained on 100%. So I guess any indexing must be done(?)

In the 3 hours since then, I used the phone to make 3 half minute calls, checked email a couple of times, surfed Safari for about 5 minutes and randomly started a few apps, closed them out and didn't do much of anything that I thought could drain the battery.
The result is that the phone is now down to 90%.

Tell me if I am wrong but to me it looks like either there is something wrong or the battery life in this phone is dreadful.

We don't experience the same battery drain as you do. To me, there are 2 possible causes:

1. Bad battery
2. There is an App on your phone that runs in the background and it drains the battery.

To check if it is an app, wipe the phone back to factory settings, don't install any other Apps, then put in your SIM card and monitor the battery drain. If it still drains fast with no extra apps installed, then you do have a bad phone/battery. If there is no parasitic drain, then it is most likely an app that you installed and it drains the battery.
