You might not believe this, but a friend of mine in college used the Caps Lock key for every capital letter he ever had to type—he only touched Shift for symbols. Bizarre, right? The new "time-delay/anti-accidental Caps" feature on Mac keyboards would drive him batty I'd imagine.

Yup, I believe it cos I use it too. Was how we were kind of "taught" to type when I was younger. I think all the typists that my old company typed that way too. And yes, the new Apple caps lock is very f**king annoying for me! :-(

Maybe what they should do is make it into a "save" key, so every time you need to save something, just press the button and it's done... I mean it's one of those 'revolutionary' Apple ideas since they're so big on 'back up'

I also find it bizzare how some keyboards have two shift keys.... why? People say that if there is only one shift key that is far away from it's letter that they want to capitalize, then it's hard to do it with just one hand.... WELL USE TWO hands - God gave use two hands so why not USE them!!

Two shift keys is very useful when you are touch typing - you can use the little finger of the opposing hand to capitalise any letter without moving your hands far away from the rest positions.

If, for example, you got rid of the right shift key, it would be a real pain to type a capital A without moving your hands around on the keyboard and affecting your typing speed.

Not everyone has two hands. :p In which case, Caps Lock would be there to save the day anyway!

I <3 Caps Lock, it's my favourite key. :D

WHAT IF YOU HAVE NO PINKY FINGER AND WANT TO SHOUT!

A redesign for a forward delete key please apple!

haha look how small spacebar, shift and delete/backspace keys are! does anyone know what the special keys are to the right and left of spacebar are? also on the Japanse MBP keyboard why dont they make the space bar bigger to fill up the space to the left of the left arrow key?!

Surprisingly, my exchange student from Japan came with his laptop, and I was lucky enough to actually use the Japanese keyboard for 2 full weeks. Many of the keys were very helpful while writing in hiragana (the basic Japanese alphabet) and using the little escape- like button on the top right (not only does it act as an escape key, but its a hotkey to change from hiragana to English letters).

Also, I had to get comfortable with the oversized enter key and the small spacebar. When you type in Japanese, there are multiple kanji combinations you actually have to scroll down to get across the right message. So the different layout is necessary for using Japanese.

I take it and bind it to control-- I use the control key more often then I write long strings of capital letters.

I used to use a UNIX-layout Sun Type 6 with my Mac Mini until I spilled soda in it. (Took it apart and cleaned it several times, but it always felt stiff afterwards...)

It's quite frustrating when I sit down at a Windows machine, since there's no way to do capslock-is-control as a user preference, only system-wide-- and since most of the time I'm using Windows it's in a computer lab where I don't have admin rights, I find myself mistyping a lot.

The first thing I do when I get a new laptop (mac) is turn off the capslock via the keyboard prefs. I hate that key, I hit it too often when I go for the 'a' key.

At work, one of the KVM's had a sun keyboard, because one of the 24 machines on that KVM was a sun box. It was different, but I can easily see getting used to it.

After years of correcting classes work full of CAPITALISED SENTENCES I prised the caps-lock off of all the PC keyboard, removed the wee rubber bit underneath and put back all the caps lock keys.
I'm now much happier.

Much easier to turn off on a Mac, as I discovered today - no more CAPS LOCK FOR ME!!!!!

Oops, my finger slipped, as the bishop said to the actress.

Adobe Software depends on it. The primary example being the Crosshair/Tool Toggle.

I dislike caps-lock as well.

Whenever I read things like HEY WHATS GOING ON, I yell in my head.

I can't read caps without yelling. I like lower case ;)

Well, if we're talking about redoing the keyboard, we really should be looking at replacing QWERTY altogether. This layout was specifically designed to SLOW DOWN typists. Surely in this day and age we should be encouraging efficiency?

Uh oh, it's another one of those Dvorak layout loons. ;)

Nah.

Actually in doing some further reading it's ostensibly not true that QWERTY slows you down (although it was designed to maximize efficiency on mechanical typewriters, no longer an issue today).

But surely more efficient keyboard layouts are out there. It is, of course, virtually impossible to move to them.

I do know a guy that switched his laptop to use a DVORAK layout. Personally I think he's crazy ;)
