You wouldn't want an alarm, you forgot, to go off during a funeral. Many people use alarms as reminders.

Applications that ignore the mute button are not only games. Runkeeper, Jamie Oliver cooking, etc.

Which ever way you turn it, it is just silly that a mute button only mutes some applications.

Poor application design. If the devs don't support muting the app then it's on their shoulders and they should be the ones you complain to. Also, you can mute and turn the volume down all the way, or just turn off the phone (which a funeral would probably warrant).

Im not telling you what to do(although it sounds like it, i know), im just providing recommendations that i very much encourage you to do.

Recommending to strangers what they should and shouldn't do in their own bedroom is just weird.

That fact of the matter is that iPhone cannot be totally silenced without going through a 2-3 step process. That is a problem because there are critical situations when you don't want the phone to make any sound. Make me wonder whether switching Airplane mode also works most of the time as well.

----------

plug in headphones into the phone. That should silent it, I think.

Headphones are not something that everyone carries around with them all the time.

Every single phone I've ever had has had a silent mode that is actually silent. I can't understand why Apple decided that was too simple.

There is a silent mode that is actually silent. Flip the switch and turn the volume all the way down.

Once and again, Problem Solved.

No, it doesn't work. Sound still plays. Open for example the iPod app and press play.

You'll have to flip the switch, turn the volume down and then open a application and turn the application volume down there as well (using the side buttons).

Then it's finally silent.

New York Philharmonic cell phone offender speaks out

"The man, who described himself as a business executive between 60 and 70 who runs two companies, told the New York Times he had not slept in two days.

"You can imagine how devastating it is to know you had a hand in that," he said. "It's horrible, horrible."

He told the paper he had just switched from a Blackberry to an iPhone the day before the incident. He turned the phone to silent before the performance, but was not aware that an alarm on the device had accidently been set and would still ring.

I'm surprised no one has told you to get an android yet. I'd suggest a different forum if you are looking for reasonable suggestions or solutions.

My suggestion is a pain but jailbreak and use a silence app. I'm in tapatalk so I can't look back to see if you have a 4s if so you'll have to wait for that solution.

All the phones I've owned have had alarms which still go off when the phones on silent, and that's how it should be imo. If its a problem, then just disable the alarm :S?

All the phones I've owned have had alarms which still go off when the phones on silent ...

Then you haven't owned many other phones, probably only a Blackberry - which "silent" mechanism borders on absurdity.

Because of the way the mute switch works? You'd have to be a pretty pathetic Apple fanboy to recommend that because of a single switch.

I just leave my iPhone in the car when I'm going somewhere where a sound from the phone would be very inappropriate(theater/church/etc). I have 2-3 apps that have alarm functionality that are occasionally used for reminders and I don't know if they heed the mute switch or ignore it.

Which is by design, as you yourself even quoted earlier. At least this guy has a reasonable excuse (new iPhone). You on the other hand... I don't get what your goal here is.

Complaining about and discussing what I consider to be a bad design decision by Apple.

In my opinion having to go through a multistep process just to silence a phone is unnecessarily complex.

You on the other hand should mature a bit and understand that complaints and debates aren't necessarily a bad thing or a conspiracy against Apple.

Now you're putting words in my mouth. All I said was I don't understand what your goal here is, nothing about your complaints and debates.

However, now that you've made it clear that your sole motive here is to complain, something that does no good for anybody including yourself or the community here, I can quickly leave and unsubscribe from this thread.

I FOR ONE ENjoYED The ARTICLE YOU posted.

Thanks.

Here we go. Another "Apple made it that way on purpose..." argument. Yes, they did, but it sucks. Neither I, nor the OP, feel we should have to jump through flaming hoops to completely silence a phone. That is our gripe. That is our main issue. If you disagree, that's completely fine. The beauty of choice is it makes you equally as right as us.

The goal is to achieve an easy "silence" switch without having to delve into setting, hit your volume keys down 3,490,301 times, etc. I don't think that is unreasonable, but then again I don;t find having a toggle for wifi and bluetooth at the tap of a button an unreasonable request either, yet I was reamed for that one in another thread.

We all get that you guys aren't happy and we understand why, but 1) you're clearly in the minority, 2) there's nothing you can do about it, and if there was, complaining on MacRumors isn't it. Thirdly, regarding a toggle for wifi and bluetooth at the tap of a button... there are third-party solutions for that, such as http://brdrck.me/settings/

For the record, I've never had any issues with sounds from my iPhone with the switch muted. Only alarms, but like most normal people, I make sure I don't have any alarms set when I don't want my phone to go off. And for the argument that people use alarms for reminders, well... that's not what they're for: there's a Reminders app and a Calendar with alerts.

There are a lot of posts here that do nothing more than spur discussion. We know it's not going to change the world. Or it might... by giving a jailbreak dev an idea. Or hell, maybe even Apple will take some things they see here into consideration. These company's representatives, and their employees, do spend time on forums like these. IMO anyway.

I am aware of the toggles, but they aren't REAL toggles. They are more like links within the settings app. While better than nothing, still not what I would have liked.

I agree with the OP. It is annoying to have my phone on mute then try to watch some video message or something that a friend sent or play a game only to notice that the sound isnt completely muted.
