I've just been to my local Vodafone shop and they say they will be doing pre orders as soon as the system is up.

They've took a note of my number, the phone and tariff I want and the network I'm currently on and said they will call me as soon as the system is ready.

Fingers crossed

I was just told that vodafone will not be taking any pre orders. I ink the networks really need to clear issues like this up

Just popped into my local Vodafone store (Bromley) to ask about what's going to happen on Thursday and they're doing in-store pre-orders. I've got my name down for a 32GB but sadly they're only opening at 9am. Going to get there about half 7 and sit in the cafe next door until I see a queue forming. :)

Hey Roobsa, I have also just pre-ordered a 32GB in Bromley Vodafone. The guy said that they may now be opening a bit earlier but couldn't give a time. What is worrying me now is that in the last page someone said that Vodafone are now only selling to existing costumers like O2. I explained that I was porting from O2 and no one said that I couldn't.

Any clarification on that anyone?

I can only hope then that its kind of a store by store basis. ie. a stores allotted x amount of iPhone 4's for launch though some are letting you reserve one.

The whole thing has been a shambles tbh

Went into the O2 shop yesterday. The assistant manager said:

- they've been told they're getting a consignment from Apple, but they've not been told how many units per shop (they may know more later in the week, but they'll probably not know until Wednesday, or on Thursday morning). In her words "we could get five phones, we could get 50".

- O2 have been reassured by Apple that they will have plenty of stock for O2 stores. O2 stores are getting priority after Apple.

- She confirmed that the iPhone 4 will be available to O2 customers only, as per the website announcement

- they will probably open the shops early, based on how many people are there. If they open at 10, this means 9 or possibly earlier, depending on when the shipment arrives and how quickly they can merchandise the stock and get them into the system.

- she's had dozens of people coming in and asking for the iPhone 4, asking to put a deposit down, asking for phones to be reserved etc. It's FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED. Two phones max per person. Contract owners have to be present to sign a new contract.

- she said to make sure you have your micro sim with you, but if not, they'll have plenty in the stores; certainly, they'll have enough to deal with any phones they sell on the day.

- you can trade in your old iPhone on the day and the money will be processed instantly against your purchase, however, you need to knock 10% off the O2 Recycle website value because you're doing it in-store. A 16gb 3G will get you £149, depending on the condition and whether it's boxed etc.

- F&F discounts will not apply to new iPhone 4 contracts unless a member of O2 staff does it for you on your behalf.

- take all the ID you will need: two recently-dated proofs of address, photographic ID.

Good luck everyone!

Although mine hasn't started pre orders yet (they took my number to call me when they do) they also know I'm coming from O2 as they asked what network I was on and if my contract was up etc.

I'd say its anyones guess though... nearly every post contradicts the next one :(

I went to the store on the High Street, not in the Glades but I said I was from O2 and I wasn't told about not being able to get a contract as a new customer. I rang Vodafone sales and was told that I will be able to get the phone on Thursday.

Edit: I'll probably go back to that store on Monday to make sure there will be a phone for me on Thursday.

I just hope by July 29th when it comes to me purchasing my first IPhone with Orange that they can send it to me next day but i have a feeling it could be a LONG wait.

I have been looking into the vodafone release, including a couple of phone calls to their upgrade department. A spokesman said yesterday that they will be taking pre orders from 9am on monday.
Also if you look at googles cached version of the page with the temporary pricing vodafone put up on the 14th...
...it says 'Pre-order your iPhone 4 by midnight on 22 June, and we'll make sure it's with you by 24 June.
We'll also give you unlimited 60 minute calls to any Vodafone UK mobile - free."

Can't wait till Monday!

I reckon this will change - especially given O2's announcement yesterday about restrictions on availability and the news that Apple have underestimated demand.

My suspicion will be that you'll have to go in to a Vodafone store, and supply will be scant.

As a significant user of data (an average of 1.4GB per month, and even upto 4.5GB one month) I was really annoyed at O2 for scrapping unlimited data. I was considering a switch to vodafone or orange but tbh, there doesn't seem to be a huge difference in total price over 24 months.

I'm currently on monthly rolling simplicity tariff which includes unlimited data, If I could stay on that tariff and buy an iPhone 4 sim free with Apple at 499 that would cost me only £979 over the year which seems pretty reasonable.

My question is, if I do this and keep my old tariff, would I retain my unlimited data? Nobody at O2 is willing to answer my question.

Yes. They're not changing tariffs for existing customers who just buy the phone. You'll need to pop into an O2 store and get a microsim beforehand (or get a craft knife to your existing sim).

Question for you. Are the simplicity 12 month deals being regarded as PAYG or contract deals? I'm obviously taking ID regardless but I want to know in case they decide to split the reservation lines accordingly.

You will keep it as you've signed up to those terms & conditions on that tariff, and it isn't phone based. Unless O2 are going to be crafty and change the terms & conditions (more easily and likely as you're on a rolling contract) than if you signed up to an 12/18/24 month contract. I can O2 clocking onto this unless their on purposely driving people to their rolling contracts by making the 18/24 months contracts less appealing for some reason.

I'm sticking with my T-Mobile Flext 18-Month contract and buying the phone SIM-Free so at least I can keep my unlimited data until February. Shame T-Mobile haven't released any info yet for their contracts (which I assume maybe very similar to Orange's being under the same company). We'll have to wait and see.

Answered earlier in this thread, you are a Pay Monthly user using the Simplicity tariff.

Does anyone know - for sure - that the iPhone 4 that is sold on PAYG is definitively locked to a carrier?

I suspect that logistically, all iPhones are sold unlocked. Plus it's better for Apple, who seem to consider carriers as mere utility pipes, at their products are unlocked and free to move between networks.

As yet, I suppose we will find out on Thursday!

Best,

Mike
