During the iOS 16 beta testing period, MacRumors wrote a series of in-depth feature guides highlighting every new addition in the update, along with how that walk you through using the new features.

Ultimate-iOS-16-Guide-Feature.jpg

This is a comprehensive guide with all of our coverage, and it's a great resource for casual users who haven't had a chance to test out ‌iOS 16 prior to its launch. Everything is organized by app or feature to make it easy to find what you might be looking for, and for those of you with iPads, many of these features are also available in iPadOS 16, with the exception of Lock Screen customization.

Lock Screen Customization

With iOS 16, Apple overhauled the iPhone's Lock Screen, introducing one of the biggest visual changes we've seen on the iPhone in years. You can set custom wallpapers, change the font of the time, and even choose widgets that you can view on the Lock Screen.

We have a guide on all of the new changes with the Lock Screen, and a long list of how tos that will help you set up your iPhone Lock Screen to suit your needs.
Messages App

Apple added a number of highly requested features to the Messages app in iOS 16, including iMessage editing, undo send, and Mark as Unread, plus the Messages app now supports SharePlay.

Our dedicated Messages guide covers everything that's new with the Messages app in iOS 16.

Focus

The Focus experience has been improved in iOS 16, making it easier to set up Focus modes. Focus modes can now be linked to different Lock Screens and Home Pages, for more customizability when you're doing different things.

I wonder if they have a feature in iOS 16 that when you press the side button and then tap the screen or side button and you’re not using Face ID the little padlock at the top is unlocked normally, I always thought they should give the user the ability to tap the padlock to lock the phone without holding the up volume and side button to lock it quickly.
It didn’t happen and I was 14 or 15 but I wonder if anything changed with 16.

Well I accidentally changed my wallpaper and now i cant seem to find the old, apple wallpaper that I liked 😔

edit: was able to switch back to the old wallpaper by changing it via the lock screen.

It likely created a new screen. Just press and hold the lockscreen and your old one should be available on the left side.

Why doesn’t hiding the search bar on the home screen give me back that space?! Why does Apple continue to drive everything to the top of the screen?!

By iOS 20 the entire usable area will just be a small patch in the top left corner.

I think a chimpanzee designed the new wallpaper feature for both "lock and home," selecting a photo for "home" is worse by far. Select the wrong photo for "home" and it makes you go back to select album!

If you hit the little album icon in the bottom left, it will take you back to the same album. Not where you were in it, though. Back to the top of course.

Appreciate the massive update post! Lots to dig into in one handy location. Well done team!

Installed this late morning. Unlike others, everything seems to go as expected.

Now in 16, I’m disappointed in two things right off the bat:
1. The new Lock Screen is far less awesome than I was hoping.
2. The existence of a bug I’ve been experiencing since at least iOS 14, affecting both Mail and Messages.
Ex. I launch Mail. Scroll through my Inbox. Open an email. Tap a link in that email that takes me out to Safari. Go back to Mail, close out of that email and back into my Inbox. Quit Mail. Relaunch Mail, and instead of taking me back to my last state (Inbox), if goes directly to that email which contained the link I had tapped. I see the same behavior in Messages. It’s super annoying. Anyone else?

The pill will move there on iPhone 15. ;)

I tried the Weather lock screen. It seemed to have Do Not Disturb built in and ON, and when I turned it off, it put me back to my previous lock screen. I wound up removing the Do Not Disturb focus feature altogether to get that Weather Home Screen to work. It would be nice if the focus was available to touch and turn on/off DND when needed but couldn't figure it out.

Does anyone know what this feature is? It's described as part of the contacts app...:

"You can see unread messages or missed FaceTime and phone calls from friends and family, right on your Home Screen."

iMessage: „ … you can only opt to unsend an iMessage for up to two minutes after it's been delivered.“ I still can‘t wrap my head around this feature. This must mean that an iMessage is queued in an outbox for 2 minutes before the intended recipients can get it? If so, will communication delay be a welcome feature?
