a wish list. cool. of course, i know i probably won't get any of this, and i am aware that many of these are ideologically offensive to ios purists and jobs worshippers, but i'll say them anyways in order from what i perceive to be the easiest to actually implement.

1. flash toggle.
i hate flash. i don't want to use it. but, people outside the apple miniverse do. and, if i want to get my work done, i need it. apps are there to help, but don't always work. put it in safari and be done with it.

2. bluetooth mouse support.
i know the ipad is not a computer. but, with this addition it could pretty much replace mine. i just need to create documents (bluetooth keyboard) and edit them (the gorilla arm sucks for any major project). hackers have done it with the ipad. asus has (apparently) made it happen with their tablet. get on the ball apple.

3. end the itunes tyranny.
maybe ios5 will do this. i want to move files in their folders over to the ipad. that's it. no big deal. but, apple won't let me. fortunately, the goodreaderusb app accomplishes this task. just drag and drop! it can be done for every app if apple loosened up a bit.

4. better japanese language support.
japanese is not chinese. there is some overlap, and the handwritten character recognition for chinese works ok in many cases, but by no means all. typing in japanese is frustrating because the software sucks. the same for osx. windows has infinitely more intelligent software.

The list below is worth having Apple's engineers take a look at. It's a grouping of [almost] every single thing people want to see in the next iPad (iPad 3), and is easily the most comprehensive such list here.

Here are all of the reasonable (?) hardware wishes people have...

1. To start, here is a mockup i made of an ipad that has the exact same external dimensions as the original ipad but with an 11", 1920 x 1440 retina display screen, smaller bezel, and no home button (?).
image

the next ipad should remain the exact same size as the original ipad. But that doesn't mean the screen has to stay the same. The bezel on the ipad is massive. If apple cuts down on the amount of room the bezel takes, the screen could be made 11 inches without making the ipad any bigger. At the very least, shave .3" off the bezel to give the next ipad a 10" screen.

A resolution of 1920x1440 would allow the ipad to display three iphone 4 apps simultanously, side by side, in their native resolution, and it would allow the playback of 1080p resolution video at its native resolution without any of the pixelation or artifacts that occur when you stretch a video to a resolution other than it's native resolution. Displaying three iphone 4 apps in their native resolution side by side would allow for multitasking in a whole new way. You could simultaneously skype someone while checking your email and browsing the web.

2. Remove the home button entirely (pictured above) and use ios 5's current ipad gestures to switch between apps/close to home-screen. No home button = smaller bezel and smaller case with the same size screen = lighter and more portable = win. The home button looks ugly and tacky on the ipad, and makes it look like a giant stretched out iphone rather than a tablet. Look at the motorola xoom. It has no home button. Why can't the ipad?

3. Increased capacity to 128gb (max.)

4. 1gb of ram

5. Anti-glare matte gorilla glass (this video demonstrates why...http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/29/dell-streaks-gorilla-glass-screen-torture-tested-for-your-amus/)

image

6. Liquidmetal! (Apple will do something with it someday! :d)

7. HD/FM radio tuner/receiver and transmitter akin to those found in ipod nanos - "i'd like to see a fm receiver, because when i am at the gym, they transmit the audio for the tvs over fm (lots of public places do this, not just gyms, but restaurants, stores etc)."

8. Improved back/front cameras

9. 4G LTE :)

10. USB 3.0 (or ThunderBolt) for faster syncing/charging

11. Inductive charging as well as a solar panel on front for charging on-the-go

12. RFID aka. Near field communication

Below covers all of the reasonable software wishes people have...

13. Updated lock screen that displays the weather next to the clock

14. Dynamic weather and clock icons

15. Better integration with other ios devices - "i want the ipad to integrate more with the iphone. I've said it all along. There should be a software setting on the iphone that pushes all texts, notifications to the ipad, so i don't have to go back and forth just to reply to messages. Now blackberry is doing it with the playbook but i figured apple would have done this from the get go."

16. Much lower minimum brightness (still too bright for use at night - for me anyway)

17. Arrow keys on the keyboard so we can correct mistakes without having to delete everything.

18. Improved voice commands (you know...)

19. Full use of bluetooth. It sucks that we can't bt a photo or anything else to another device.

20. Improved mail functionality (list what you want...)

21. Multiple profiles based on your location (at work vs. Home) or for other people (think "the family ipad")

22. SBSettings in notification center (include a "remove all background processes" toggle as well)

23. Allow us to hide stock apps

24. Free navigation service (Google or own in-house solution)

25. smarter os (ex: If you type an email and can't send it because you're not connected to the internet, instead of the message "cannot send mail," etc. It should say "will send message in background once internet connection is reestablished")

26. better autocorrect + customizable dictionary - the ipad has the worst auto-correct system ever devised by man. It doesn’t learn from habits, which means i have to reject the same changes repeatedly, forever. I also can’t add words. And speaking of the address book, i better not have any contacts prefaced with “mr.” if i do, i need to be prepared to constantly reject an unwanted change every time i type the word “me”.

Misc.

- facetime over 3g/4g and letting us make video calls to non-ios devices
- protect or hide apps (for privacy without having to lock my entire phone)
- more safari tabs (bump to 12 or so)

if you like the list, email it to steve jobs or send an ipad feedback form.

I hear mr. Job's email is sjobs@apple.com

FIXED! :D

Then what is this for?

Oh, and you forgot this part: "Apple does, however, welcome your feedback regarding many areas of Apple’s existing business. If you want to send us your feedback, and we hope you do, we simply request that you send it to us using the form found at http://www.apple.com/contact, or you can choose from the many other listed areas for your feedback. Please provide only specific feedback on Apple’s existing products or marketing strategies; do not include any ideas that Apple’s policy will not permit it to accept or consider. It’s just one more way that Apple can learn how to best satisfy your needs." :)

Then what is this for? Oh, and you forgot this part [snip]

Why, it's for anything which isn't covered by the paragraph and link I posted, of course. I didn't forget anything, you'll notice in the paragraph you cut-and-pasted that it says "Please provide only specific feedback on Apple’s existing products or marketing strategies; do not include any ideas that Apple’s policy will not permit it to accept or consider." Feel free to send your laundry-list; I expect it will hit the trash can pretty quickly.

What will they accept then? And for the record, it's not my laundry-list. It's wikoogle's - I just edited it.

Thats too bad. Im sure Apple would be smart enough to give people the option to people who can understand filesystems and not enable it by default but I guess they're unwilling.

I don't require an official filesystem on my iPad, just a documents folder that applications can hook into. The only time I use the full filesystem is after jailbreaking, and I have iFile for that.

Exactly. This would solve a lot of issues with attaching documents from within Mail or Safari.

Is iCloud going to implement some version of this? I'm still a little mystified as to how iCloud is going to be implemented on Macs. Sure, the same doc in Pages will sync across all iOS devices. But what abouty Mac?

Isn't there an app for this? I think it's called "Bump."

Yes, but I was thinking it could be integrated into the OS itself.

The iPhone wishlist thread pretty much all came true, perhaps the iPad wishlist thread will experience a similar fate.

They should make the iPhone 5 1280 x 960 and the iPad 3 1920x1280.

The iPhone 5 would have double the resolution of the iPhone 4s to display two iPhone 4s apps side by side, and the iPad 3 would have double the resolution of the iPhone 5 and four times the resolution of the iPhone 4s.
