I have unlimited storage at 7200 3GB/s because I have a Voyager Q running off eSata on my MBP. I'm looking forward to them coming out with 1TB 7200. I need speed and space.

I wanto do the same on my 17" i7, I also own the voyager and find the speeds on FW800 a bit crap. Can you please advise me what esata card you have used, is it stable???
Also how much of a speed difference is there in read/write speeds as compared to using FW800. Thanks much 4 your help :)

Does anyone have insight on this Samsung 1TB internal:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152242&Tpk=samsung 1tb

I can read from the reviews that it's a solid drive for the MBP, but I'm worried that the speed (5400rpm) is going to be a real killer. Is it THAT dramatic of a difference from 7200rpm? I plan on storing my entire iTunes library on my computer, so that's a couple hundred GB of music and about 500GB of movies/TV shows. Is this going to be a problem?

I have a 2010 13" MBP.

(Suggestions are welcome, but I do prefer internal storage due to convenience when I travel, thanks :D)

I had a 120gb 5400 rpm drive for 2 years in my last mbp. I switched to a 7200 rpm 500gb drive, and the speed difference wasn't life altering. It won't be THAT dramatic of a difference.
if you are really worried, you could always do a 750gb 7200rpm drive

imho, 1tb in a laptop is kind of pointless unless the laptops your main/only comp.

I once thought that my massive 5MB hard drive was all i would ever need as i could not imagine being able to fill it.

Now i feer that even 1 TB is not enough even for a 2nd computer, because i want all my media with me in my laptop and all my projects and games.

Yep, 1TB here and filling it up rapidly (Handbrake ftw). I have the WD10TPVT and its quiet and fast. I read somewhere that the 5200 RPM read/write speeds were actually comparable to a 500GB 7200 RPM HDD, due to platter density or something... meh, I dunno, I'm not a HDD expert. But anyway, I'm happy with the setup since it allows me to have all my movies with me when I travel.

Here's the thread re: platter density on this drive https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/871145/

lol true, when i bought my comp i thought 1tb would be more then enough, within six months i used all of it up, so now i have a 2TB hdd with another 2TB external hdd.

but i guess bigger the hdd the more happier everyone is :D

Do I count myself in the club if I have 2 x 500GB in RAID-0 in my MacBook Pro? Now, only if I can get Win 7 on the RAID-0 setup I'll be a happy man.

Can anyone comment on the performance drop from 7200RPM to 5200RPM?

-Danno

1tb 5200rpm drive should be just as fast (or even faster) as a 250gb 7200rpm drive as it has alot higher platter density.

Pretty bad if you're trying to run multiple virtual machines or moving files around a lot.

However, when I boot up from power button to log in screen in 21 seconds. The iMac with RAID-0 boots up from power to log in screen in 34 seconds. But, after log in, it takes ~50 seconds for the MBP while it only takes ~25 seconds for the iMac.

Do note: I only have ~8GB free on the MBP while the iMac has 900GB free.

I run 3 virtual machines on my system with the WD Scorpio blue 1TB 5400rpm, problem is not the drive speed, it's the amount of ram you are using, with 8GB it is no problem at all.

Just got done installing a 1 Teeb drive ripped out of a Toshiba Canvio external drive.

It's pretty awesome. Gonna install an SSD in the optibay once I have the cash.

I have been rockin' a 1TB WD drive since March. I need something bigger now, though, as mine is 89% full. The 1.5TB drives aren't too far off so that's what I'll be throwing in there when they are released. So far the industry has been keeping pretty good pace with my storage needs! (250GB -> 500GB -> 1TB)

Will putting in the 1TB void the warranty in any way shape or form?

I would love the extra storage, I have all of my movies backed up on an external hardrive, but sometimes it is a pain to carry it around, or to transfer them to the hardrive if I just want to grab the MBP and go.

I am constantly on the move so if I could have that kind of memory and some movies to watch, that would be nice!!

I would like to know as well. I'm trying to decide if I want a new Air or a smaller MBP and having 1TB HDD in my laptop would make my decision easier.

no it will not void anything. its a simple hard drive swap

I was filling up my 500gb HD, when I finally realized that I never go back and watch any of those movies, or listen to half the songs I had downloaded.

Two months ago I sat down during a rainy weekend and I deleted 330 gb worth of data. So now I'm sitting at around 150gb left, and can't justify getting a internal 1 Tb.

I'm just waiting for one more price drop before getting an SSD though

Did you at least save the data on an external?

Due to the data density on the 1TB drive, 5200 vs 7200 doesn't really matter that much in this scenario.

It shouldn't, but it actually does. I've had a WD 1TB for almost a year now and I'll be ditching it very soon. It is far slower than some 7200RPM drives I've used. Sick and tired of the beach ball!

I'm going to be putting all of my media on a RAID 1 external drive (dual 2TB) and replacing the 1TB with a WD 7200RPM Black drive ($50!!).

jesus, this thread has blown my mind...I know nothing... and have so many questions

1. someone said they were running 3 virtual machines...what's that? :D lol
2. so I can take out my optical drive and replace it with an HDD? Apple won't hunt me down and pop an anti-depressant in my head?
3. Can I take my OEM 320gb HDD and move it into the optical spot and use an SSD as my start up disk :D? The Apple gods will allow OSX to be installed onto a heathen drive like that??
4. What kind of performance dif does all this make???
5. Does having a SSD as a start up disk effect bat life? does having 2 HDD(one ssd) make a difference?

Look at me...I feel like a little girl at a justin bieber concert...so happy...
