The Unofficial Waiting for Version 3.0 of the iPhone to Come Out

Yea, I'm gonna have to agree with that. I mean, there were several more than knowledgable people playing with it at CES and have seen the thing more up close in person than any of us have and they seem to like it. Or better yet, I havn't heard much negativity about it from anyone I know that has played around with one, only "OMG, I may be ditching my iphone for this!"

Thats whats hitting hard for me on the Palm. Negativity is practically zero. I have a feeling Walt Mossberg or Pogue is going to love the Palm over the iPhone. I really think Apple blew it this time.

When`people`have only had time to play with the device at CES what do you expect? When they've had a chance to live with it for a while on the Sprint network, the problems will come out.

Meh, this guy has a point as well. Guess we'll just wait and see.

The only thing is when will the Pre be out exactly? I know they said the first half of 2009 but in a way I want it to come out like, next month and let everyone get it that's getting it and I wanna hear the verdict leading up to WWDC. And then in another way I don't want it to come out until just up to WWDC to see what Apple will do and see the battle unfold in the following months there after. Except you know if they did that then Apple would come out with something else to blow away the Pre and there would be no battle.

So I dunno. I'm only hoping that the Pre does really well to show apple they aren't the only one in this fight and opens their eyes a little. With all the media attention the Pre is getting I'm sure they are paying attention, at least a little. ;)

Mossberg and Pogue get a phone earlier than anyone else anyways correct? For reviewing? Didn't they get some special time with the iphone before it's release or maybe I'm thinking of something else?

Anyhow, I know Pogue posted a tweet saying how he loooved the new Pre, so I guess at least he will be excited about it.

I for one am disappointed with Apple. With such a big lead to be suddenly overtaken by the Palm is a big blow to the iPhone platform. Science Channel just showed the Palm at CES and the UI was fast, fluid. Plus having all the features we asked for almost 2 years.

I don't expect 3.0 to catchup or even be close on par with Palm. Six months not enough time.

I like to think of it as in the "cup is half-full" philosophy, the palm-pre is seems like it is a true contender (gphone and BB-Storm I don't really still need time) though we'll still have to wait for to come out and see for our selfs, but with competition means better products on both sides.

Plus the only true "catching up" that apple has to do is on the software side (cut & paste, picture messaging, ect.)

As long as your're not waiting for a physical keyboard, these updates will come ...

And cheers to hoping for a chip update!

The first iPhone wasn't subsidized. The 3g was. I think they will have a contract eligible price and an early upgrade price, like with the 3g, but this time around current iPhone owners on a contract won't get the upgrade eligible price.

I remember when I thought I'd never be able to fill a 40GB hard drive......you know like pre-y2k...

It'll never be enough. You'll never "win". But if you've got standards, God bless ya!!

I remember worrying about filling my 750MB hard drive with pictures from BBS's

The argument that its not released yet is weak. The device is real, not vaporware. I wish I can, but I have the iP3G, spent way too much money on it already.

Well actually it's not a serial production piece, its a functional prototype, so there is no proof that it will operate exactly as the demo. Here's another thing how do you know what Apple has in the pipeline? Do they keep you a breast of all their developments? They may or may not have something that is better, and you'll never now until they decide to release it.

They haven't lost one sale to the Pre, as it isn't available yet. If it was me from a business stand point I'd wait till just before the Pre was to go on sale and announce my new phone, and screw Palm. They'd have a device that was released and couldn't respond with any hardware changes. People might decide to wait the couple of month till your new phone was coming out.

Exactly what I've been thinking as well.

I've seen Apple do this on several occasions, none that come to mind immediately so someone help if they remember but didn't Apple release something on the Friday the Storm came out?

Anyways, I think that may be a very strategic move on Apple's part. And in a way I hope that Palm waits up until June sometime around WWDC to finally release the phone because if they release it like, say, next month and it turns out that it sucks and people arent buying it and Palm/Sprint tank then apple will *sigh* and not have to worry about a thing nor do a thing about it. :D

Since Apple loves coming out with brand new products EACH year I think AT&T should make all iPhone 3G owners eligible for subsidized pricing , they would make alot mor money that way and AT&T would keep more customers.

They would probably lose customers because users of every other phone get a new phone every 2 years while iPhone owners get one every year. That would cause resentment from everyone else and cause them to think that iPhone users are the only ones AT&T cares about and get special treatment.
