Predictably The Verge has an article up about Apple’s expensive USB-C cables/adapters.
IMG_1236.jpeg

So who actually will need to buy this? I could understand a USB-C to USB-A cable as airplanes, older cars, hotels etc. may still be USB-A. But someone having a lightning accessory that they would need to plug into their iPhone seems pretty niche. If it’s a stand or something would an adapter like this even work?

only if you have headphones with a lightning jack or other devices with lightning jacks that you regularly plug into your phone. Otherwise you don't need one.
Are there any headphones besides Beats that would be lightning?

It would make sense for people that have this as their only C device and want to still use a bunch of their old cables.

I just bought these for $5 to be able to use carplay in rental cars that dont have USB-C. Still going to carry one cable with me for everything. The Verge is killing it though.

Kindly link the article next time so it's easier to cross reference: https://www.theverge.com/2023/9/12/23870441/apple-usb-c-cables-lightning-dongle-price#

I checked the link - it's not an affiliate link - I thought they might be earning some revenue off of it, but no, so I'm not sure why they would highlight that specifically.

6’ USB-C cables are like 2 for $10-15 though. I don’t see the point of getting a $30 adapter when it’s cheaper to just buy new cables.
There's quite a bit of people that only buy apple accessories directly from apple. Sucks but there are a lot of them.

But an Apple 60W USB-C cable is only $19.

I am equally confused by the article. I never ever see anyone using anything with a Lighting connector except cables.
There are some older alarm clocks/ speakers that doubled as a "charger dock" with a lighting connecter built into them.

AirPods Max? But that’s definitely not an “everyone” problem and would only matter if you wanted to listen to them hardwired (which I don’t think I’ve ever done in the years I’ve owned them.)

I stopped regularly reading The Verge after Bohn left and then stopped visiting them after their redesign. In general I found their writing was going downhill and designed more for getting engagement (like this piece of misinformation) than informing.

The article also says this:
But if you want to really get all the juice in and out of your new iPhone, especially if you’re buying a 15 Pro or Pro Max, you’ll need the $69 Thunderbolt 4 Pro Cable. It’s a meter long, and it supports data transfer up to 40Gbps, which is about 20x as fast as USB 2. It also supports fast charging, but only up to 100 watts.
Despite the fact that the 15 pro only supports usb 3. I'm guessing the article was written ahead of time with the details filled in after the keynote. Pretty terrible overall.

I know they exist, I own lots of them. I just doubt they’re still common enough to warrant the opinion expressed in the article.

Besides, the docks are typically designed to stiffly hold the phone upright. Apple’s floppy dongle won’t be of much use in such a scenario.

The Verge has never been a good source of information, especially after that video tutorial for building a PC. I can't take them seriously.

Apple sold quite a lot of Lightning to HDMI adapters. Also, people who bought iPhones before 2020 got EarPods with Lightning included. But yes, I think the vast majority will not buy this adapter, because even if you do have some Lightning stuff lying around, you’re much more likely to switch them to USB-C as well instead of investing in a dead technology.

Those fast transfer MicroSD card readers - I have one in lightning and one in USB C (for iPad). Will some people with stuff like that but honestly - just switch everything to USB C and forget this Apple-induced lightning nightmare ever happened.
