The Weeknd's New Single Streamed Nearly Twice as Many Times on Apple Music Than Spotify [Updated]

Specifically fewer than 1000 listens? Might have to go back a few weeks to find the last time I specifically had that, but just this week it recommended "Earthspan" by Paul Mottram to me. Only 3703 total listens, and I'm probably 10+ of them.

'Earthspan' is Paul Mottram's 6th most popular track on Apple Music.

Spotify's subscribers and users figures are fishy. In theory, Spotify has about as many subscribers as Apple in the US, or more, and many more abroad.

In theory.

With at least one major carrier in Canada, when you sign up for theie services, they also give you Spotify Premium for free. I know this is the case with many European carriers as well. I suspect that contributes substantially to their subscriber counts.

I know EE gives out Apple music subscription for free, and Dish and a couple other providers give you a free Apple TV for signing up. I would be interested to know if they count these as "subscriptions".

I wonder if this is a sign of the whole iOS vs android scenario playing out all over again. On paper, android has greater market share, but iOS is more profitable overall and so app developers tend to prioritise iOS more.

If Apple is driving higher engagement overall, this could lead to more artistes choosing to focus Apple Music more.

It’s a good time to be in the Apple ecosystem.
