However, to balance the field, I asked someone at the Apple Store (over a year ago) when OS X would have Hebrew support and they said, "Do people still speak Hebrew?"

Not sure how I missed this earlier. I'm pretty sure it's been there since Jaguar, at the latest.

Yeah it's about time to let the thread die an honourable death and not drag-on with reruns like the Funny Pics. It's simply too large to expect everybody to read every other story and not post the same thing.

Or perhaps a general (huge) list of all the ones so far, generalising the personal stories. How about it tazo, seeing as its your thread? Just as long i get the rights to the adverts, the movie and the book!:p

Someone should get a list of the best ones and do a set of Switcher-esque ads involving actors. Now that would be neat.

Heh. I saw a nice article on a Linux advocacy site called "Is Windows ready for the desktop?", a nice "mirror image" of all the articles saying Linux isn't ready for desktop use. It's amazing to see what brain-damaged misfeatures people will put up with because they're used to them.

(I'm not claiming Linux *is* necessarily suitable for general desktop use, although it's a nice environment to code in; I'm considering buying a high-end iBook or low-end Powerbook in the hope that OS X is the right compromise between simplicity and hackability :))

Last year, when I still had my 10 year old Quadra 950, I was surfing the internet, talking on ICQ and AOL Instant Messenger, and playing one of the thousands of online text games... I got into a discussion about computers and software and so forth... Well, I told them that I was running a 10 year old computer. They proceeded to ask me what kind of computer it was, naming off various different 10 year old PC models, all the while completely shocked that I was able to use it when one of them had a 6 year old PC that would barely run. I told them that it was a Quadra 950. All but one of them was stumped as to what it was. That one said "Isn't that a Mac?" I stated that it was in fact a Mac. Then they all proceeded to say how much Macs suck. At which I replied with "At least mine can still run, and fairly well, at that"

Ahh, the joy of stumping PC users...

Heck I used to play Quake 3 on my PB, with mouse pad

Its not my thread, I don't own it. I am proud that I created a topic that people were interested in and felt the need to post to, however its not my thread. a thread is nothing without the people behind it.

to the person who would like to see this thread die an honorable death, I am fine with that. You can start by not posting. This thread lives with every breath of post you breath into it.

Please do not spam this thread guys, 500 replies later and 98 percent of it has been on topic. Don't ruin a potentially very long running thread, with useless spams.

Well, really, PPC does mean Mac, but it does not mean MacOS. (Yes, I believe that there are some PPC computers out there that aren't Macs, but they are, by far, a minority in the field.)

I'd be curious as to the question of stabiliity. What does he have installed on his iBook? I've found that OS X is equally stable, in general, as Linux (which is why I like Linux better than Windows). But I must also say that my experience with YellowDog Linux, specifically, was less stellar.

On Topic:

A friend saw the dock (with magnification) and exclaimed "Wow! Why doesn't my computer have that?!"

To which his wife said "Because our computer isn't a Mac."
I can't find the numbers now.... but I believe that Apple is a minor user of PPC chips, when talking in number of units made per year.

iBook - 10.2.6 - 500MHz DVD with 384MB of RAM

Dock - small, hidden, and no magnification. Too much of a cpu hog for me :(

"Why can't Macs run foo.exe? Everything can do that! Your computer must be broken!"

Amen - last year my 4yr old C333 died - and i got a MDD DP 867. Now i enjoy it soooo much - juet needs more RAM (only got 256) and another 3HDDs and ill be set for a few years.

It's really unfortunate that the iBooks' VRAM can't be upgraded. I've got a 500Mhz iBook too, and without QE it shows it's age. I still use magnification though, and size the dock all the way down- it's not that bad. Did it on a Wallstreet and you could almost see the icons being rendered as the sizes changed. oof:(

Quadras rocked - I got an 840av that still does it's thing.

How about "Yeah, I'll get a Mac once I get enough money." aarrghh- the iBook is only $1,000!! (Though I've had people do double & triple takes after mentioning the price.)

Anybody remembers the PowerMac 6100? Back then I was in the Apple Promotion Team here in Germany and we were doing presentations in big consumer markets. Of course most of the people who were fiddling around with the Macs we brought were DOS/Windows users.

Unfortunately the power button of the PM6100 was right under the floppy drive on the right side. Like every 20 minutes I had to restart the computer because some dull Windows user wanted to try out the floppy drive and pushed the button to "eject" the disk and got a heart-attack when suddenly the screen turned black!!!:D

Yeah, but a nice Powerbook or Powermac is significantly more than that :)

So's a quality PC who's longevity approaches that of a Mac before becoming obsolete (due to a Windows forced upgrade) or breaking.

That old price argument is really no longer valid - except when you consider speed differences. Of course, after three months of registry "haystacking" that 3Ghz P4 won't be so fast, thus invalidating even that part of the argument. :D

My IT director just yesterday when I was trying to get my 12PB on the LAN here at work:

"Windows sucks. It's ok. I admit it, and you can too. I just don't think Macs are a very good business machine, but with OS X, I may be wrong."

Wow! Well, clearly he's thinking about the classic, uberproprietary Macintosh of old. At least he's got an open mind. ;)

What? I seem to be running Windows 98SE just fine. Works great with Office 2000 and IE 6 et al (no choice in the matter, it's a required work config). Is OS 8 still that widely used?

When, post rebate, a 2.66Ghz Dell P4 can be had for $500, the price argument is valid, because, hey, if the P4 does blow up twice in the lifespan of a Mac and needs to be replaced, who cares, you get a 'free' upgrade compared to buying a Mac in the first place.

and my big Athlon machine is still plenty fast after 5 months..

I'm digging this ibook, but raw performance isn't one of it's strong points :)

Either way, you'll be paying for something that lasts longer. windows users don't see that they're paying a (seemingly) low price for a (seemingly) fast machine which then conks-out or dies with 2-3 years. You pay a good amount up front for a Mac, but it'll still be around in a few years, long after the windows box bites the dust. All the windows people I know "have to get a new computer" every 2 years because they think theirs is getting old.

Maybe Apple should put this in their ads? "Think Different- longer" or something  I dunno, just a thought.

and windows boxes offend my sense of design .. especially those alienware machines- I'm sorry but I find them hideous. Sony, NEC & Fujitsu have been bringing out some real Frankenstein monsters.

Yeah, but paying three times as much for something that lasts twice as long still balances out to being bad value.

Yeah, I guess that's true.

For the money, I've always thought the iBooks were a good deal. The PowerBooks I'm a little iffy on. (and the ProMouse- $70??!!)

We could start another thread about price complaints, wonder if we could beat the number of posts in this thread? ;)

Nice! I still play Quake 3 with my trackpad on my iBook when I feel like a challenge or I can't be bothered to plug my mouse in!

The only reasons I use a second mouse button is in Word when I correct the mistakes its highlighted for me - its a slight annoyance going Ctrl-click every time I come accross a mistake (yes I know I could use the cmmnd-shift-= keypress or whatever it is to check it all at once but its a bit of a hassle). I used to alwats use it on Championship Manager 01-02 but I just got CM4 and that doesn't need it.

Well, yes, that would be true. But, the problem with that argument is that, at least in my experience, Macs last much more than twice as long as PCs. As an example (and this is only one of many that I've known) I had a neighbor who had purchased a PMac 6100 when it first came out in 1994. I knew about their machine because it needed some maintenance and they asked me if I could do it. I agreed, and got them all set up. The machine ran great and did everything they needed it to do. They were running MacOS 8 on that machine. Well, that was in April of 2001. Recently I got an email from them thanking me again for the maintenance, as it's been running great ever since. So, that's a nine year old computer that's still working great. If one assumes that Windows machines must be replaced every two years, then this machine has lasted more than four times as long.

I used to count how many people I killed with my trackpad :D
kinda silly, but it sure was fun to tell someone that he was killed by a trackpad :D

:D Today someone asked me if I could download a program for them off of kazaa, there internet is down, I said I don't use kazaa, I have a mac. They told me macs suck because you can't use kazaa. I frowned and walked away.

Not a question, but a statement made by a guy I know that has questionable taste in computer hardware at the best of times

"It would be unwise for the majority of home users to have one [a mac]. they're highly elitist and offer little in benefits over a PC/Windows solution"

They're highly elitist?.. what sort of argument is that supposed to be exactly?

Then again, he's adamant that IBM make good harddisks.. so whatever...

Well they make good hard disks, but in my experience do not last as long as other brands.
