it is truly funny how many pc users think small, aesthetically pleasing, compact devices cannot be useful. lol.

-tazo

a lot of people often thinks that by having and using or working with something that is bewildering and confusing to others, they will look superior, smarter, more intelligent, etc.

consider this: a mac user with a nice looking mac on an elegant and neat desk, compared to a messy pc desk with cables, cables, devices, etc all over their desk.
it's ingrained in most people's minds that the latter image screams busy-ness(sp?), and geekiness/smartness. i'm not saying it's true, but when u've been working and being productive for some time, your workspace will get messy and cluttered real fast.

until this misconception is corrected, there's not much that can be done do to counter trollous comments except by explaining to them the differences and pros and cons.

:p

@WasteGate
it's kind of true thou. a second, third, or fourth mosue button can indeed increase productivity.

Ok ok fairs fair on that point. geez! Anyway, my main points were that Macs are more stable (which they obviously are) and do have modern games running them. I mean, if we're gonna compare like for like, my parents have been using IE at home for years (my dad's work website has certain features that require IE) and on OS X, it ain't crashed or hung (it's taken a while to load, but thats because we still use the built in 56k modem). I know the Mac and PC versions are made by different people but all the same, both the Macs I use run extremely stably.

My 2p:p

I have to take exception to this - the only thing that has flatlined my PC in the past three months (it *never* gets turned off unless system updates require it, and the last time that happened was about that far back) was the Apple-supplied software for interfacing with my iPod (not Musicmatch, the underlying tech).

On seeing 3 Macs in our office and drooling over the 17" iMac, then finding out that it wasn't JUST the monitor but the whole darn computer: then learning it was a Mac, one guy said, "Wow! Who makes the Apples these days 'cause Apple went out of business years ago?"
I had absolutely no printable answer to that.

this is the point where you stare blankly into the guys facem qestioning your religion :p lol

or just go:

my. god.

One of my friends and I were in to the Mac vs PC debate over at his house. The conversation ended and we started talking about general computer software. He was telling me about this cool game he bought and wanted to show me how it worked - and brag how this game wasn't available for the mac which is true. He started the game and was in it for about a minute when the blue screen of death popped up. My response "You know are right about PCs, my mac can't do that!" This was on a new dell (three months old in Feb 2003) running the latest WIN XP.

Yes, I sure miss the blue screen of death! And forget about connecting a PC to a network - what a nightmare.

things like this - you know if i typed my response to the "why mac?" "it went out of business yrs ago" etc - i would get banned from here for the rest of eternity or until the internet was destroyed (which geeks will know is not possible - it can not be destroyed because the internet is P2P with a client server support frame - indestructable - long story)

Sheesh! I'm just gonna shut up about that, for fear of provoking an argument. Or is that the point of threads in general?

Anyway, nice thing I saw in the highstreet today. Daddy showing his toddler the Apples. You should have seen her face when she say the G4 iMac! Just beautiful!:) The other interesting thing they had was a movie playing on the Apple LCD screens (the 23"?) showing game footage and cut screens from Harry Potter, Warcraft 3, the God game from Peter Molyneux (can't remember what its called), Links Pro Golf and some others I didn't recognise with the caption at the end (black type on white screen) "Anyone for game?". Apple should seriously produce this - it looked mint -and dispelled the myths about gaming on Macs.

here are a few comments (paraphrased)

Macs suck because you can't program with them.

Macs suck because you can't create web pages.

Macs suck because you can't open Word documents.

Mircosoft doesn't make and software for them.

There are no games for them. (true there are less games, but there are still games)

Macs Suck because they can't network with other computers.

Macs suck because they always crash.

Macs suck because you can't "end task" when they lock up (my persopnal favourite because it proves that they have experainced crashes in the PC world)

Macs suck because they can't be upgraded (to which I ask, what upgrades have you done on your computer?... amost every time it is "I added RAM" )

Macs suck because you can't use a two button mouse.

"Macs suck."
Why?
"Cause they do."
Why?
"they just do."
Why?
"I don't know they just do."

** as a note most of these students experiances have been on old lc475's or classics because their elementary schools spent thousands on these machines decades ago and they don't want to let them go, while they have spent all their money on new PC's.*** most have never experianced a modern Mac until they enter my room.

There are some great comments on here and I've heard ALOT of them which is somewhat frightening.

My favorite is: "But Macs are only for graphic designers." Of course even being a designer myself, it is an insane statement.

However, to balance the field, I asked someone at the Apple Store (over a year ago) when OS X would have Hebrew support and they said, "Do people still speak Hebrew?"

Re: It's so......white.......

LOL......before that it was it is too colorful or too weird or too different or too feminine or too fruity! Now they complain about it being so white.....of course we could go back to drab beige......that would really make things better! LOL

I'm serious about this...

when doing a quick proof for a client, they asked me if the email I sent them would work on their pc, and also if the jpeg I saved would open in Windows XP. I really had to pour on the self control to not laugh in his face.

silly things pc users say

I studied media design at college last year and being the only mac user in the group alot of pc users didn't like macs and this 1 conversation always comes to mind

friend: I hate macs they're rubbish
me: Why are they rubbish?
friend: They're too hard to use
me: eerr..macs are easier to use than pcs
friend: No they ain't
me: Yes they are...have you ever used a Mac?
friend: No
me: Your an idiot!

It seems every weekend I have a new tale to tell about my baby iBook:

"Oh, I just don't know about the whole white color."
"... man, I just wish you could upgrade them."
"... well, I need the new 80211g (or whatever it is) standard for video streaming..."

To which I added,

"Dude, you have dial up. You're not going to stream any video."

My friend also commented that you can't use the iBook outside in the sun, like, because the screen isn't bright enough. Umm, aren't almost ALL laptops this way?

This Thread proves people are just sad sometimes

Look, all the comments we get from PC users and non-computer users prove one point. The point is people either assume too much, to presumptuous, too lazy to learn, unimformed, or worse easily believe the lies Microsoft and Bill Gates have fed them.

yeah, they are. apple laptop LCDs tend to do a lot better in the sun than other laptops i have seen. i know a number of people who've been impressed.

I used to get this a lot with my old iBook:

"Aw, look at the cute little white laptop..."

Of course I managed to shut people up when I saved someone elses presentation. She was using a Wintel Laptop, and couldn't get it to recognize the projector. I pulled out my ethernet cross-over cable, copied the PowerPoint presentation to my iBook, plugged my iBook into the projector (it just worked), and let her use my iBook for her presentation. No more diminuitive comments from that crowd...

P.S. ShadowFax, congrats on Demi-God status. That's new, isn't it?

I've had to deal with this quite a bit. But isn't that part of the fun of being a mac user? When you can get pc people backed into a corner and the best they can come up with is "because", you just have to love that.

These post are funny. But what does that say about Apples marketing. Here's a commercial idea for Apple, its simple.

Take a person and just have them look straight into camera like the current ad's and say...A mac can do this, this, this, this, this, this, this etc. Just like you can on a Pc...only without the problems. Period.

Apple has to step up the marketing of their computers by letting people know that you can do just about anything on a mac that you can on a PC. That should be the main focus of their advertising, if they want to increase market share. Just my 5cents.
