i had to read this again and laugh out loud when you said apple attracts a MORE technical user, i would submit the exact opposite and apple knows this and markets it heavily. For example apple users can't be trusted to find their own applications so they need to be all in one place
Although I must say there's something about buying an Apple product which seems to attract a slightly higher tech consumer, even among regular joe schmoe's, especially with the way Apple staff is and how they really only concentrate on Apple products.

you sure about that? Now I doubt you have ever used this device if you think this device wasn't intended to be used in landscape mode 100 percent of the time. In the limited time I spent with my Xoom it just didn't feel like it did anything that special. Without any apps, it was kind of boring.

Yes, I am sure. I've owned one for a week and I can assured you it works perfectly fine in both orientations. Some apps like Air Attack only work on portrait, while Market only works on landscapes.

It's one thing to find it boring or not special, but quite another to misrepresent it. No need for that.

That must be why every review has mentioned built in apps constantly crashing! They didn't have a clean install!

I don't know what to tell you. I can only go by my experience. I have had some fcs but so does my iPad, especially playing Infinity Blade. I think that any references to being "unstable" and "unusable" are exaggerations and hyperbole.

This, of course, is based on my very limited experience of owning one and using it virtually nonstop (I'm a gadget freak) for one week. Ymmv.

It feels awkward at best in portrait mode. The included apps are all meant to work in landscape mode. The center of gravity on the Xoom feels strange. It is not comfortable to use in portrait mode at all. I believe almost every review mentions this too.

The two days I had the Xoom I found myself using it in landscape 100 percent of the time. I use my iPad in portrait mode probably 70 percent of the time.

Add that to the terrible email client and a complete lack of useful apps, I was very relieved to go back to my iPad.

I don't mean to come across as argumementative, but what you say is incorrect. I am writing this post on my Xoom. There aren't that many Xoom apps  so this was easy to test. CNN, USA Today, Google Body and Gmail all work great on portrait. I actually prefer it. Ironically the Market app only works landscape.

Browsing I prefer landscape. I like the Thumb keyboard and can type quite a bit while lying in bed. And the Gmail app is outstanding. I have several accounts and it manages my email integrating with Google mail very well (obviously).

Then we agree to disagree because I feel the Xoom is terrible in portrait mode. The weight distribution is all wrong.

The Gmail app might be good for Gmail, but most people that work for a living probably use Exchange email, for which the Xoom is just bad.

I can't comment about Exchange support as I haven't tried it. On the weight distribution I guess that is subjective, but i am feeling the weight evenly distributed. One part doesnt feel heavier than the other. But the longer shape does take some getting used to, especially if you come from an ipad.

But on the matter of "the included apps are all meant to work in landscape mode" its not a matter of opinion. The statement is just incorrect. :D

Any tablet that feels awkward to hold in portrait mode was obviously designed to run in landscape mode. You could disagree all you want, but you still wouldn't be correct.

Yeah but the Xoom is a pioneer in the android tablet with Honeycomb. Apps designed for tablet. Heard all the same stuff right before i purchased the Google g1, the original android device and business exploded. That phone was the best phone I had and the potentials were endless. The hardware was there to run the software which came in a few months.

I have to say the xoom probably won't have a good start but it will be a beast once development on honeycomb starts to boom. By then though, competitors of other android devices will have their stuff out but I think that's where hardware and specs shine. And xoom is future proof for a while with its dual core, 1gb ram (Which you have to give it up... combine that with android and you got a killer multitasking device) and a few other things.

this isnt a comparison to the ipad 2 so dont take it as such. Just a fan of both and to each its own.

Where can I find a list of the top 1000 apps? Oops, I added an extra zero, my bad. Can I play music or edit a movie on a Xoom?

I am disagreeing with your statement that all the apps are meant to run landscape, when on fact many are "meant" to be run either way.

Let me see if I can clear thus up for you: CNN app, run both ways. GMail (and Google Body, Maps, and Books) run both ways. AirAttack HD runs in portrait only. Market runs in landscape only.

So, some are "meant" to be run landscape, some are "meant" to be run portrait, and most are "meant" to be run whichever way you prefer. You know, like the iPad.

I just didn't want to let the impression that Xoom apps don't work in portrait mode unchallenged when in fact most do just fine. Google Books runs best in portrait mode IMHO.

Lol, aren't you on an Apple fansite? Do you own any Apple products?

Music I'm not sure but the Xoom comes standard with Movie Studio for the "real cameras" it has. Oops. ;)

for the $70 you save with the iPad I could buy a 12mp point and shoot that takes way better pictures than the cheap 5mp camera in the xoom.

From the Arstechnica review. I agree completely with this comment.....

Due to the length, the way that the weight is distributed feels off when it's held vertically. You can get a better balance if you hold it near the top rather than near the keyboard when you use it in portrait, but it's still not great. The taper also makes it feel strange when held vertically.

The Xoom was clearly designed to not be used in portrait mode. Of course android apps will still work in portrait mode, but that's mostly because almost every single app you have available to run on the Xoom was designed for a phone.

I appreciate the reviewers subjective opinion of holding it in portrait. All I can say is that after reading several chapters on Google Books, portrait seems just as natural as landscape. I have to admit at first it was odd as I am used to the iPad, but after several days of use portrait mode grows on you. Its like a mini newspaper.

That, of course, is MY subjective opinion as an owner and not a professional reviewer.

You're kidding right? Play music? yes you can i mean that's the basics right there. every phone since the 90's can play mp3s.

Edit a movie? I dont know and i dont care. I frankly find the whole imovie and guitar band thing ridiculous but that's because I don't care for it. If you're serious about video editting, most people use their computers. i dont ever see myself trying to edit things on a tablet. Unless they're short 30 second clips where you can put in a small intro, some music and cut/paste options. That's what my macbook pro is about. :p

Oh and top 1000 apps? Like i said in my previous post, there isn't any. My post was outlining the pure optimism for when it does and my personal prediction is it will boom within the next few months, just like with the original Google G1. The android tablet market developers havent been able to develop until they got their own hardware because apparently the emulators are garbage. This is a brand new OS that's 2 weeks old so i'd say if anything, the timing for the Xoom is off. Motorola released a tablet too ahead of its time with no software support, rendering it handicapped but whether they had a choice to or not, who knows. Every month there's a new device coming out. The tech game never ends.
