people say that every time apple makes changes to their GUIs. so i'll bet you a macbook that, in time, the current look will become comfortable for (almost) everyone. and someone will say the same thing you're saying now when we see the next major shift in apple GUIs...

I entirely agree with the summation that people get annoyed by GUI changes and then get used to them

in this case however, they have made the UI objectively less user friendly in order to shoehorn in a design language meant for a completely different interface

this isn't a new take on keyboard/pointer interface, this is slapping a touch/spatial interface on top of such purely for the sake af aesthetics

it's beta 1, let's see if & how this gets refined over time...

neither hopeful nor discouraged, will deal with it as it goes. meanwhile, am thoroughly enjoying running os26 as it is right now ☺️

It’s the opposite for me

I try and use it in the morning and once i inevitably revert to sequoia it’s like a breath of fresh air

All the floating stuff is both distracting and steals too much screen real estate for me

Not to mention I do a lot of work in safari (Sharepoint) and losing the compact tab bar is just brutal

at this point, (almost) none of it seems intrusive, am just doing what i always do. but fwiw, just installed os 26 on my mac, and am gonna need some time...

I’d actually argue that they went with Liquid Glass as a way to stop Android OEMs borrowing their aesthetic. It will be difficult for 3rd parties to replicate the glass textures. Note that this doesn’t necessarily mean they’re any good.

A bigger worry is Apple continuing to cannibalise its own products instead of taking influence from elsewhere. IOS7 was a direct reaction to Windows Phone 7 making the rest of the market look dated. It even made Google tidy up the chaos that was Android at the time. In the last 5 years we’ve had influence from WatchOS and now VisionOS (with a heavy dose of the Mac thrown onto the iPad). The duopoly leave no room for a disruptor.

I can’t work out whether this is an indictment of Apple’s design team or the wider state of graphic design.

What you just said is also something people say every time the GUI changes.

"No no for real this time"

Nope.

Outside of rumor websites, there is no AI disaster. Even the WSJ looked so stupid running with that narrative in their interview with Apple. When Craig broke down what they promised vs. what they actually shipped, it’s a really small piece that didn’t make it. And not even that important of a piece. It boils down to a couple of semi interesting features tied to Siri.

Apple Intelligence is largely for enhancing features throughout the operating system, replacing what was previously called Machine Learning. It goes beyond that with things like writing tools and summaries, which generative AI is good at.

The only people sticking to this “AI disaster” narrative are those who think Siri is supposed to be a ChatGPT replacement. But why do we need a ChatGPT replacement? Apple devices are already the best way to use ChatGPT. I’d like to maybe see tighter integration, but beyond that expecting Apple Intelligence to be a chat bot is a misunderstanding of Apple’s goals and AI in general.

Siri is Apple's version of the AI assistant and has shown little to no improvement in 14 years, despite having first-mover advantage. I'd call that a disaster. She even had her "Eat up Martha" moment on Curb Your Enthusiasm!

That said, of course generative AI is overhyped and is closer to the Machine Learning nomenclature Apple has been using.

Give me a translucent iPhone and Mac. And airpods. Hell, and the Apple TV. Translucent all the things.
Yeah, like these Beats, though they seem matte which is not quite right. But serious thought, Apple refers to Aqua as the start of this design language, that clearly matched the hardware at the time. Maybe it will be that rumoured all-glass iPhone in the future.

Early 00s are back in fashion though.
It's really weird being in my mid 70's and seeing stuff roll back into fashion after enough time has elapsed foor it to feel fresh for a new generation. I just wish I had kept my original Levi's denim jacket that I paid £7.50 for back in '68 🤣 ( I let my daughter borrow it a couple of decades ago and never saw it again... )

Perspective:

'Distractions' aren't a thing. They don't work. Companies don't spend a bunch of time and money to try to create a distraction ... because it will never have that effect. Humans are easily capable of keeping track of multiple relevant topics at the same time. It's how you can have a job, deal with all the different asynchronous things that happen at work, and have a social life, and have hobbies, and keep track of what's going on in the world, with your friends, etc. In fact, companies depend and rely on humans having that capability. We all know what's going on with the phones, iPads, the Macs, the operating systems, the services, and so on... and Apple wants us to be able to know all those things and keep track of all of that at the same time because it adds value to the ecosystem.

There is not a chance in the world that Apple spent all this effort creating a whole new UI/UX hoping that everyone would just forget about AI. They know no one is going to forget about AI.

The fact that this thread even exists is proof of that.

but did you notice your shoelaces are untied?

Heart me out! Considering all the previous beta release s and how uncooked 26 really is, I really think the whole new UI design is in fact a coverup to hide the AI failure and in reality is not really any UI overhaul, but just a nice pr trick to move our focus from AI into this new looks. LIke guys all they did is changed some fonts, yeah maybe it is now more frosty or maybe not who cares. It is crazy far from being ready to publish, those first 3 betas are more like very early alphas.iOS is looking kinda ok but macOS is a one big mess with no new concept jsut some added transparencies and crazy amount of bugs.
I really think they just want to direct ourr focus nothing less nothing more, will it work or not, we will talk about how ****** that whole glass update is but will forget how far behind Apple is considering AI. And I bet the new iphones will be advertised with this uncooked ios instead of AI bc AI is the dream of the future for apple at the current stage.
