After much thought, I think I know why Apple hasn't released a lot of info regarding the July 11th iPhone 3G release:

They don't expect a big crowd. That simple.

I know that may be hard for us hardcore fans to accept, but let me explain my reasons.

1. Almost all of my friends had no idea that the new iPhone is coming, and no, they do not live in a cave.

2. The Apple Store has classes running all day long on Saturday and Sunday, and even on Friday night.

I really do think that most stores will be rather normal on Friday, except for a slight rush in the morning. That's my prediction...

You won't be popular on this board for saying what you did..... but you are very observant, and I think you are correct.

What other cell phone do you recall lines for and people camping out for 7 days (other than the first iPhone)? I think Apple might be trying to keep low key to not over hype and under deliver.

Actually, to be precise, nobody is camping out for 7 days for the iPhone 3G.
The group outside the NYC 5th Ave store is a nutso organic farming group seeking publicity for their cause by setting the world record for "the most time spent waiting in line to buy something."

What is their cause? In their words:
"What is our goal? Put simply, to transform the White House lawn into an organic farm." -- all 17 acres in front of the White House.

I kid you not.

I am not sure this is the type of press/buzz Apple needs.

my local store has no workshops scheduled for friday, nor do there seem to be any appointments available

They don't follow the iPhone like i do, but all of us aren't computer nerds who read engadget.

I lol'd.

Anyway, to OP, there's a ton of details being released. AT&T has an entire page dedicated to the iPhone 3G. The search engines (except Google) have iPhone articles on their front pages. Of course there's not an explosion of ads, but that's cause it's an upgrade.

All the people I know are aware of a new iPhone...and they don't know anything about Apple (it took them like two months after January 15th before they found out about the Macbook Air..and even then they weren't sure).

Because it's not that big of an upgrade..... The rate plans suck for those without 3G coverage... and 2.0 is gonna be the on original iPhones

The fact that the 8 am announcement isn't even on their frontpage right now I think kinda proves my point. How many people are going to even know that the stores are opening two hours early? A few, but most of them are on this forum.

News flash, when a company announces the time there stores open internally or any announcement like that, in an off hour time (after 5PM) most changes aren't made and won't be known officially till the next day.

I'm telling you, the original poster in just one if many who seem hell bent on deluding themselves that Friday will be a walk in the park.

They are releasing a phone in 20 countries, on a single day but they'll have plenty of stock for every one of those stores in every country.

Hey look! A flying pig!

:)

(just having a little fun here folks, save the barbecue)

Newsflash. Learn the difference between there and their. :D

To the OP...I commend your courage in starting a discussion. It seems that no matter what you say around here, people will jump your throats. Obviously the debate is part of it, but there seems to be nothing but negative energy lately.

But to their points, this year isn't last year and iPhone 3G is not the first of its kind. So naturally the hype is less for an upgrade. Hopefully that came across in a neutral, non-insulting way :D
