I think the 1 is significance in representing 1 phone or 1 more things.

When someone with an iPhone looks at their home screen and sees a 1 on the phone icon, do they think:

A) "Hey, that's right, I do have just one iPhone"
B) "I guess someone has one more thing to tell me after they tell me some other stuff"
or
C) "Someone has a message for me"

When someone sees a phone icon with 1 notification on an Apple event invite, do they think, "I have a voicemail"?

I'm not saying I disagree, HOWEVER...

Did you ever think maybe you're looking at it all wrong? You say "it's right in front of us"... maybe so! Maybe this is their forewarning to let us know there will only be a 4S so we don't get our hopes up.

Just my $.02.

"I have a voicemail" and "Someone has a message for me" are equivalent statements.

My point was that seeing that symbol on an Apple media event invite and seeing that symbol on your phone are two fundamentally different things and as such must be interpreted in their appropriate contexts.

My point is that the other 3 icons are crystal clear in their meaning, so why shouldn't we also assume the clearest, most obvious meaning of the 4th icon?

When it comes to Apple, you really don't want to assume anything. Their event invites have always been littered with little hints. It's not cut and dry.

No, they haven't. People always go nuts and try to read into them, but in reality their messages are always extremely obvious.

I will start off by saying this, any true Apple fan knows that keynotes are filled with surprises and a few "Oh, and there's one more thing"'s. On the subject of the iPhone 4S iTunes beta controversy, do you really think Apple is stupid enough to leak something like that? Don't you see what's going on? It's right in front of us, and we are still blind to the answer. On the morning of October 4th at 10 AM, Apple will begin a keynote that will change the iPhone forever. At first, they will announce the iPhone 4S. The crowd will be mixed with clapping and boo-ing. They will talk about its new features, and what it can do. They may touch base on some iPod refreshments as well. As the time nears 11 AM, the press is disappointed, and Apple has let the tech community down. But wait... there's one more thing :apple:

If you don't understand what I said, I will explain it in a nutshell. Apple will announce the iPhone 4S and play the audience like a piano. Then, they will surprise everyone and announce the iPhone 5.

Your thoughts?

One Missed Call = There's One More Thing

I don't buy this. What percentage of the iPhone customer base do you think reads these sites? There have been over 100 Million iPhones sold as of the last keynote. At this moment we are probably closer to 120 million, so my guess is somewhere around 80 million unique iPhone customers. The traffic on these websites makes up .001% of their user base or less.

Do you really think they would intentionally leak their newest flagship product to the loyal .001% of customers just so they can surprise us? If that was truly their plan, they would leak it through one of their trusted sources like AllthingsD/WSJ or Bloomberg.

Don't get me wrong, I want it to happen too and I would be just as happy as everyone else if we get a redesign, but the evidence doesn't seem to add up if you ask me.

The badge simply means you have a notification. The calendar icon shows the date. The clock icon shows the time. The map icon shows the location. The phone icon with a notification badge means that Apple will be notifying us about the iPhone. Thats it.

Wrong..Apple isn't signifying notifications by showing a missed call. It doesn't make sense from the "new notifications" standpoint. it's boring.

The missed call clue points to some type of FaceTime or imessage from Steve jobs with the "1 more thing" iPhone 5 announce.

Was it obvious before the event that "Back to the Mac" was referring to merging iOS components with OSX? Because the obvious message would have just been "We've been talking about iProducts for a while, time to talk about Macs again."

You're saying that Apple is going to come out, guns blazing, showing off and promoting their latest phone, the iPhone 4S... going over it's features for the majority of the keynote, and then, last minute, bring out a new, better phone, completely discounting what they've spent the rest of the show promoting?

Sorry, that doesn't seem right.

IF there are 2 phones, they'll start with the 5, go over it's new screen size and case, then continue to the internals, processor, camera, and eventually to iOS5 and the various new features. After all that, they'll mention the 'low end' 4S as a replacement for the 4 and the now discontinued 3GS.

If there's going to be a, "Oh, and there's one more thing" it'll simply be that they're available online immediately and in stores in 2-3 days.

Marketing 101. They'd open with their strongest foot, continue on a high note throughout, and end with a huge, unsuspecting bang.

Your way would open slow leaving people unimpressed and waiting for the "big surprise" that they'd know would have to come. If anything, it'd end up with the audience feeling like they were being talked down to.

Perhaps their text can have double meanings, but they are obvious after the fact. Like this time, "Let's talk iPhone" probably means the obvious, plus the fact that there will be the new voice control system. There was also an "It's time to mix things up." one for the iPod Shuffle debut.

Even if there is only one new iPhone, it still won't be clear whether that 1 on the phone icon was supposed to indicate that or simply that they had a message for us. If it was any number other than 1, then I think it would mean something, but it's not. That's why I think the most obvious interpretation is correct here.

Seeing as how the butting heads here isn't really progressing anywhere, I think we can just end this with me saying, it's very possible you're right, and it's also very possible that you're wrong. C'est la vie when it comes to predicting Mac stuff :)

The problem is that it is impossible to tell in this case who is right or wrong...which is why I think I'm right :p
