It's like going to a flea market, you spend restless hours trying to look for something good. But there's only one good thing out of ten pieces of crap.

They do have a feature called the top 25 free and paid apps
it even does the top 50, all the best apps are usually in there.

And you can just ignore the other ones;)

I love those commercials, there is no time wasted, its almost perfect. We all know Apple is the king of marketing.

Who is deleting Tallest Skil's posts and why? The ones I saw didnt break any rules at all.

yes there are. but its like 20 to 1 ratio of dumb apps to useful ones.

With over 32,000 apps, that means there's over 1500 useful ones in the app store. I agree that there is a ton of completely useless garbage, but there's also a lot of great ones that really come in handy.

Actually it's more: want blinking annoying flash ads to suck up all your battery life?
Don't worry, it wont happen.

Look around you, WSJ ( Uncle Mossberg vids ), NYT, CNN, ABC and just about every other site on the planet uses Flash for video content.

Agree

^^ I'd have to agree there are so many apps that should not even be called apps or allowed in the app store. I do have several tho that are outstanding and use a lot.
Maybe someday Apple will Prune the App store and throw all the useless apps in a new category so we can not waste time clicking on that section and jump right to the good stuff.

I love those ads also, they are great. Keep in mind i don't ever recall seeing an ad where they highlight a dump app either?

All the commercials do for me is tell me what additional crap I can download. I've only found one useful app out of it unfortunately.

You need to take that up with a mod.

omg whos deleting tallest ski's posts?!?! hallelujah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

anyways, you guys are saying most apps are useless..well one man's useless app is another man's treasure..so suck on that!!

...okay fine a lot of apps are useless no matter who you are

Ads

I do like the commercials and they make me smile as an iPhone owner.
I wish the apps they used in the ads worked a bit better.
The new compass one isn't that great and the G-Park is better with the last update but still not that accurate.
If my app is going to be used in the commercial I would want it to be as close to perfect as it can be!

I love all the whining about "useless" apps.

Here's a tip: Go get a Blackberry then and have next to NO apps worth a crap.

You have choices.

Seems simple to me.

Facebook, Shazam, Urbanspoon, Cube Runner, Jelly Car, TwitterFon, GNotes, BeeJive, Comic Touch and Dictionary.com were all worth searching through the rubbish.

There are tons of useless apps in the app store. The problem I have with the app store is most of the apps are basically things you can do in Safari. Why do I need a separate application that just searches Google when I could just use Safari and use the google search bar? There needs to be a section of the on the app store that just says "Mobile websites" and put every mobile version of every website in that location.

is the OP a joke bc i laughed my guts out

But ya the apps for the Iphone are MOSTLY down right atrocious. And you really cant count apps like facebook...come on my grandmas nokia has that LOL

The only app thats decent is Pandora but then again that too is adapted from an already established website like fbook and twitter.

Ok so I thought about it. Textfree is a blessing to humanity. Or atleast me.

Yea yea, now where is the app for sending & receiving pics in text messages?

Yea yea, now where is the app for a video camera?

Seems the RAZR I use to have had those apps.

Yes, there is erroneous belief around here that if another phone doesn't have an associated "app store", it must not have useful apps available to it. The truth is, all the most useful iPhone apps are available to other phones too. In fact, there are some extremely useful apps that are not available for the iPhone; DataViz DTG, Slingplayer (sure these two may be in the approval process, but still, after many months, they are still MIA), a flashplayer, Opera Mobile, TomTom, Pocket Informant.

I wonder what that ratio is on Windows (Mobile or otherwise)

It's probably a lot lower, since they probably die off easier. That's the problem with the App Store, it perpetuates the garbage endlessly.

Die off easier? How do you mean? There's a _crap load_ of useless shareware for Windows still floating around out there. Visit download.com.

Or is the ease of use of the App Store a knock against it?

The ease of use is a knock against the App Store. Any Joe Schmoe can pay $99, make a fart app (or one-touch dialer), place it on the App Store, and potentially just forget about it. It would be nice if developers had to actively renew their apps once per year (or some specified amount of time). People will tons of crappy apps (that don't even sell) would likely just let them expire. Now, this would not remove the app from someone's iPhone (if, by some chance, someone loves the app), it would just remove it from the App Store (and in effect, de-clutter the it).

Why would Apple want to destroy the Long Tail of the App Store?

Besides, if the community is active enough, the rating system should remove the junk (by pushing it down) and promote the good stuff (by letting it bubble to the top).

I want quality apps as much as the next guy - but I get what Apple is doing. Do you tell Amazon to not stock items you think are dumb? Isn't Amazon "cluttered" by your definition?

dude don't even ask haha - when i had my Samsung Epix running Windows Mobile..

lets just say... this is one of hte popular sites to get apps from

http://www.1800pocketpc.com/

how about the ratio to apps that work in the app store to apps that don't work for windows mobile.

any way....

some of you have mentioned clutter - but the app store isn't that bad once you go back to it after looking through cydia :)
