Have you looked at an iPad Pro in the past year to see if you can find any fringing issue? Text is super crips and it has two layers of OLED in a tandem setup that means that each light emitter is only sent about half as much power and thus has a more than double lifespan. Probably larger as the effects of greater power are usually non-linear. Burn-in has not been a concern with the tandem OLEDS and this is likely what Apple will use on these new MacBooks.

There have been OLED rumors for years. You'd think they'd go with mini LED on the portables as they are considerably brighter than OLED, but it's probably a cost thing.

Only if they keep LCD as an option, I have too many static elements on my desktop that I don’t like having hidden, and with it being an all-in-one it would be a pain to replace the panel if it got burn-in (I can’t even imagine what Apple would charge for a 27 or 30 inch OLED panel replacement lmao)

I don’t want to have to go back to the days of needing screensavers 💀

I don’t understand the push for OLED on real computers like these where people are using them for work with the same apps and toolbars etc for 8+ hours a day. I don’t know how burn in could be avoided in a situation like that

I’m guessing that’s why they’re pushing for the low contrast icons and clear elements with Liquid Glass, less obvious burn in when you have less contrast

All of my recent iPhones have had the time/battery etc burn in on them after about a year, and I tend to keep macs much longer than iPhones, I’d guess most of us do?

About OLED: I'm constantly using my LG C1 (probably late 2021) on full brightness almost since launch for movies and games with all the static HUD/info, expecting to get a noticeable quality downgrade or burn in (actually it would be burn out) but it still never occurred.

So I wouldn't worry about burn in on Apple OLED devices.

That’s not quite the same as someone using their computer for work or something with the exact same static elements on screen for the majority of 8+ hours a day (dock, menu bar, toolbars, etc)

It’s one thing to get OLED as an external display, but to have it be built-in would with no LCD option would be bad

I hope they release ultra low blue light OLEDs in their devices to eliminate melatonin inhibition. It's one of the key reasons I don't use my macbook's screen in the evenings.

It's not about being mature technology. It's about the physics of OLEDs vs traditional LEDs. The larger the screen, the bigger the problem. On phones, it doesn't matter as much, on Laptops, it absolutely will matter. Apple doesn't care, you'll upgrade sooner and they get more money.

But the idea that OLEDs are just universally 'better' is just not true.
 
Will they add a "force real black background to fully make use of the oled" mode to Safari?

Probably not, they'll make it translucent instead.
 
I’m still on the M1 MBA. Must resist upgrading until the OLED MBAs come out. Gonna be a hard two years!
 
I love my iPad Pro M4 so much because of the OLED - I upgraded from an iPad mini 6 to the Pro just for that. But I miss the mini form factor so much - I will buy and OLED mini day one when it comes out!

I won't pay any premium so the black theme in Visual Studio Code will have better blacks on a MacBook Air. Also. 24 inch oled iMac sounds like a waste.
 
I'm curious what kind of accessibility plan Apple has for these. Will they offer a flicker free LCD option for people who are getting migraines and eye-strain from OLED displays? What about people who keep their screens on all day and don't want permanent image retention?

Apple is usually great with accessibility but they kinda dropped the ball with OLED.

if it is important to you, it is important to you. personally I detest the x86 architecture with it's segmented memory, which caused some trepidation with apple's adaption of intel x86 chips, so I understand the display angst but don't suffer from it
 
I honestly don't want OLED on a laptop because of the burn in concerns. I also never use it in dark conditions so the pure black benefit isn't really visible to me.

Modern OLED tech is exceptionally resilient to burn in these days. Not saying it can’t happen - but it takes thousands of hours on a static image at max brightness to start seeing burn in on something like a Nintendo Switch OLED - and burn in is incredibly rare on iPhones. Most devices have built in tools like refreshing and pixel shifting that’s invisible to us but really keep the burn in risk to a minimum even with static elements like a menu bar, etc.
