Yup I’m glad my parents just got the m1 one this past spring now. They needed a new Mac as theirs died. It was overpriced as hell but works great for their needs And this wait for something that shoulda been out ages ago ain’t worth it
You’re a good son.

Yeah, I wish for a world where tech items would remain perfectly usable for at least 10 years or so.
The two longest lived Apple products near me, in daily use:

  • 8 Years old: My Apple TV HD. It is rock solid and still updated.
  • 15 Years old: My neighbor still runs her Airport Express N v1. A 15 year run is pretty good, although the software is no longer being updated and the device has been declared obsolete.

Agree with ATVHD. Have probably had it for close to that long too.

Yup, same here. Purchased a couple years ago to replace a 10 year old imac that died. Still working fine, even with one of the parents that passed away. When the other parent passes, we will likely take it back and have it replace the 10 year old imac in the basement.

I wouldn't worry so much about peripherals and accessories, they don't need to be updated often to stay relevant, but the iMac is really in dire need an update.

And … I just bought my second Apple Pencil 2 because my original one from 2018 dropped to the ground and the tip was broken. 😢

Edit: Yes I’m aware that the tip can be replaced. However, The tip broke in half and the part that was screwed into the pencil deformed and I tried many times and I still couldn’t get it out.

All of these make sense. Pro Display - yes it should be updated, but you don't want people to think their $6000 display will be outdated in 6 months, or they won't buy another $6000 display from you.

The Pro Display XDR also still stands unique in it's market segment. Dell only just released the world's second 32" 6K display and it can't touch the XDR in terms of performance.

Same with AirPods Max but at a lower price point. Even normal Airpods/AirPods Pro are on 18 month cycles.

Considering the price, I expect people would not be in the general market to replace their APMs for many, many years so it makes sense that Apple would be waiting. Now that there is a new Beats Studio, it is probably around the time for APM to get an update.

The one on this list that is surprising is the iMac. The M1 iMac was awesome, and I don't see any reason they didn't just spec bump it with M2, other than maybe they are using the iMac to clear out old M1 fab inventory and will update it with an M3.

My guess is iMac sales are slow and steady enough that M2 would not have really moved the needle that much, so they put it on an every-other generation upgrade cycle (though I do hope the next model also offers an M3 Pro BTO option).

Is it true Apple still sells Apple Watch Series 3 or was that discontinued last year? Can't recall.

The Series 3 was discontinued last September.

I have an iPad mini 4 that is also reaching the 8 year mark, and which I’d like to continue to use, but software obsolescence is an issue. For example, iCloud E2EE (Advanced Data Protection) requires all devices connected to the same Apple ID to be on iOS/iPadOS 16.

I'm personally waiting for a new Magic Mouse, to replace the still-current model that was released in 2015 which needs to get flipped upside down to recharge 😅

...maybe it'll come with a new iMac. 🤞
Also, more ergonomic, after all, if you want gestures you can get a trackpad.
