About 2 weeks ago i went into "usage" to check my data usage and i saw a new item added called tethering data. I do not have 3.0 anymore with the tethering hack so i don't know if it actually will know if you are tethering or not but i just thought that was very interesting. Sorry if this has already been posted.

There are carriers that allow tethering with an iPhone. I'm not really sure if AT&T knows if you're tethering since they don't support it right now.

7 days - 7.8 gig of data? I would be concerned with that and the fact that you can be cut off if you keep it up. What on earth are you doing to suck down 7.8 gig in 7 days? Let alone - on a phone none the less.

remember that 7 days could be a life time total for the phone. so 7.8 gigs in 168 hours of use is pretty easy to come by.

One of the carriers that has the iPhone here in Portugal has a data allowance, and a tethering allowance, so it might be for those cases.

    Both of you are incorrect.

That is 7 days of call time. That means he has been on calls on his iPhone for 7 days, not 'used' his phone for only 7 days total.

Unless I'm missing something, that screenshot is only "proof" that if you use a built-in feature of the iPhone OS, the iPhone OS will know you used it. This doesn't show that the phone provides that information to either Apple or AT&T.

i had something long and drawn out to post but my frustration just keeps building with this company. The service is poor, the coverage is poor as well...i drop calls everywhere and i live and work in a large city that SHOULD have great coverage. When you call to ask why your voice mail isnt working they transfer me around 90 times. I am just fed up thats all.

Sorry but not all service areas are like yours. I enjoy great speeds and coverage and therefor think AT&T is great; however, I don't make mindless posts saying "AT&T is Awesome". Vice-versa can be said in your case.

In any case, yes AT&T can know when you tether (via 3.0.0's solution) because the iPhone sends/receives data packets to AT&T that contain identifiers as if the iPhone is a modem/router for another device (in this case your computer).

The jailbreak method doesn't have identifiers. That is because the tethering hack via jailbreak uses SSH. The iPhone sends/receives packets to AT&T as if it alone were using the Internet. However, on a back door the iPhone is using a secret & secure connection (Wi-Fi usually) to relay/retransmit that data to another device (your computer).

    Orly?

With the 3.0 non jailbroken ATT tethering hack your iphone is just running NAT. Which means there are no identifiers. It looks as if the phone is sending/receiving all data.

Aye, so as long as you JB, apple/at+t have no way of knowing about tethering... I'll keep that in mind

Go ahead, fine by me. The safest way thus far is not thru 3.0's method.

+1 ^^^ Been tethering since 3G, and haven't once received a bill regarding my tethering charges. Until I receive a bill stating that I'm being charged for tethering, I'll continue to utilize the hack.....

only bc i use it as a touch. I work for Verizon so i have my dealer phone that i use as a phone.

I love the iphone dont get me wrong, just service is lacking in certain areas so it tends to drive me nuts. Plus i went in with my family so we spend like $50 a month for the iphone...so ill keep it for a bit. :D one day maybe it will be better out here.

If you're going to tether you're suppose to be secretive about it; and using 7.8GB in 7 days is not secretive.

And I don't have that screen.

He didn't use all that in 7 days. 7 days is his total call time since he got his iPhone in July. The same for his data usage.
