We're all like little kids the night before Christmas! And Santa Jobs is coming to town. Unfortunately, we've all been bad and we're getting nothing but coal tommorow.

If that photo is accurate, Apple is going to have a gigantic hit on their hands. There will be no doubt that you're using a MacBook. Nothing looks like it and it will take years for anyone to come close.

Maybe AIR = GLASS

Hi everybody :)

Tubby from Canada, reporting for duty!

Here's my thoughts, ridiculous as they may be...

"Something in the air" might actually mean "something suspended in glass".

Could this be the return of the G4 Cube??

Okay, okay, maybe not the Cube... but considering Apple is gung-ho on the aluminum & glass these days (iMac, iPhone, NY cube store), maybe they are going to unveil something that is completely encased in glass.

I've seen pics of the new Dell monitors, where the LCD and speakers are floating in a pane of glass... fugly, but neat. Apple could do better... maybe they will.

New ACDs? Hmmm...

We are getting close to iTMS movie tore rentals, and we are due for an AppleTV refresh... perhaps the idea is to make an end-to-end, integrated media experience, and the final piece of the puzzle is a crazy-ass Cinema Display, with ultra-small chassis built in glass to hide as much frame as possible.

I'd still prefer a new Cube, but a killer screen would be exciting too.

Anyhow, I say the "air" is actually "glass"... and the "something" is definitly "something".

Cheers everyone!!

terribly ugly

Definitely not a wedge shaped laptop. That's just so Dell. I thought this was officially a no-go for Apple.

Man, are you guys kidding me? A tear drop profile? Am I the only one that thinks this mockup is absolutely HIDEOUS?

Nearly every product Apple has come out with over the past few years consists of 90º rounded angles and parallel surfaces. This design would be inconsistent with other Apple designs, a rip off of cheap Sony and Dell portables, and FUGLY!

i wonder if MacBook Pro will receive a redesign as well. Apple has been using this design since the 12" and 17" PowerBook debut years ago....me thinks its way way overdue. maybe a glass border surrounding the screen, new keyboard, and latchless design. Perhaps if a new touchpad is implemented in the MacBook Air/Lite/Mini whatever is called, it also makes its way to the Pro to create a consistent look.

You are absolutely not alone!! ;)

I 100% agree that it would be rather odd for Apple to design a laptop in the mold of Sony and Dell...and that tapered design is what they have been doing with their smaller laptops for a while. Maybe some people like the look, I really don't...but one thing is for sure, it is anything but original. Apple should be setting new standards, not copying...ehem cough cough, I mean incorporating them.

12 more hours and will see something like this..

Since I'm a new Mac user..This is the first time i'm following Macworld..hope it will be a nice experience :D

I've actually thought about that a lot, lately... with the lack of an optical drive, I wonder if Apple will start selling their software either via the Apple Store (downloads) or on flash drives? Sounds good to me... 1 flash drive as opposed to 8 DVD's (Final Cut Pro?)

You can download most of apples software now,
Trial iwork, Trial Ilife, Trial aperture, ect.

then pay for it, which unlocks it, low and behold you have the full version.

You might be kidding, but that was the first thing that caught my eye. I find it strange that someone "in the know" working on this would still be running Tiger. Could you imagine the look on Steve's face if he saw his brand new product you were working on, but chose to stay away from the brand new operating system? That would be like a Vista level insult. Moreover, Leopard is obviously going to be shipping with this thing, if it is in fact released, so the use of Tiger seems even more odd.

On the opposite side, it is interesting to take note of the Adium icon in the menubar in light of the recent MacBook Air appearance on Adium's logs. It of course is all very very convenient that the Adium Menubar icon is included in these leaded photos after the Adium story has been out for just over a day.
.

Dude. Mock. Up.

Neither the Sony SZ or Dell XPSM1330 which I assume you are referring to are generally considered to be "cheap", and are often praised for their industrial design.

Dude. Mock. Up.

I hear ya brother, that was my point. I just decided to include a bit few of my thoughts support why I felt it might be a mock up in light of the article and pictures being released by a pretty decent and reputable source like Wired.

Deja Vu all over again...

....well, maybe not quite ! :)

Reminds me when Psion introduced the Series 7 in 1999. Smaller than a laptop, larger than a pda...'instant on'...touch screen. Was way ahead of its time but was never destined to have a future running the epoc OS. Of course, epoc is a great success - see Symbian - but sadly, Psion is but a memory...ah..familiar words when describing the good ol' British industry...

Psion knew there was a market though :) I think Apple know too....

No, you're not. The same has been said by a number of people of every Apple product ever.

Nearly every product Apple has come out with over the past few years consists of 90º rounded angles and parallel surfaces.

Other than the new iMac and new nanos, the two most recent Apple hardware redesigns.

lol. 1 64Gb flash drive, or thereabouts, to get the whole FCS on. Good luck with handling that price increase.... $4,000.

Right. So why is this any less useful to the people it will be marketed towards? If you need a powerful computer, great, Apple has some nice ones. But they don't have a thin, light machine. Hopefully tomorrow they will.
And what about the group of professionals that need/want power and mobility in a more portable form than the 15" MBP? I would give my left butt cheek for something slightly smaller/lighter than the MB, with the power of the MBP. It's not like it's technically impossible.

Glass screen? Wouldn't the weight of a 12-13" chunk of glass be contrary to a lightweight design?
The glass in the iPhone doesn't increase weight noticeably compared to other similar sized phones...

these needs represent macrumors readers, namely professionals who need powerhouse computers. thats not who this thing would be targeting.
LMAO!

I am pretty sure the CD is still the Industry standard..

Other than leopard, I haven't used a optical disc to install anything on my iMac or Mac Pro.

And this comes with leopard... so...

People want:
more cpu
more disk space
more ram
more screen
more battery life
more usb ports
optical drive
integrated graphics
ethernet
firewire 800

the only thing out of that I want in a sub-laptop is the battery life. The rest? I specifically DONT want them in a sub-laptop.

Hmm, as much as I'm a huge fan of ultra-portable with no optical drive, I'd still like an ethernet port. There are still quite a few places that will have free high speed 'net w/ ethernet, but not wifi.

One way to solve this would be to have an optional accessory that communicates wireless to the laptop which you plug into the ethernet cable. Jobs would sell it as something that automatically (or as he says 'ohtomatically') transforms a wired internet connection into a wireless.

The accessory would be the size of an ipod nano, or some such. Dunno..just thinkin out loud. Probably 100 problems with such an idea, one being how it gets power.
