Small, small, small... Bring in a full Mac OS X handheld computer as small as 5 inches or so.

I will be very surprised if Apple goes with the tapered design. If Apple does an ultra-thin notebook, it will be just that: ultra-thin. I have a hard time imagining Steve on stage explaining that "If you take the thin-ness at point X and add it to the thin-ness at point Y and divide that by two, you get an incredible average thin-ness of Z. BOOM! Just like Dell. But Different."

But I could be wrong.

damnit, not pretty but I sure hope it's a different clas (as in less good) then the Macbook, I would have some regret after my recent MB purchase ouch :-( Then again, it works perfect, and I love it ... but still! So thin!

Hooray for my first post. Maybe. I feel I may be losing something by giving in.

Good post - when you've been on here as long as some of us you will get lazy and post jokes and crap like we all do - (ok, like I do.)

I think you are hinting at a little laptop/tablet thing. I think you might be right.
I might even buy it.
I should get $16-1800 for my MBP.....it is a bit big to drag around all day.

What you writ about writing got me thinking about writing again.
Er, thanks, stranger.

1. Full-sized laptops cook your boy junk
I want my boy junk uncooked(wife and I want 1 more)

2.My 17" PowerBook is fine for travel if I really need to work, but 99% of the time I am using my laptop, I am just goofing off.

3.The bathroom

And no, I don't mind spending $2000 on the "MacBook bathroom"

Lol. Best post in the thread. And 100% true.

No offense to anyone, but those of you who really want this thin laptop to come to life, I have a question. Why? I cannot imagine that Apple will charge anything less than $1500 for this laptop. What you are going to pay for is the engineering and innovation. I think it looks really cool.

A user earlier stated that this new laptop may open other markets up such for college students and writers. For the writers I can see where they might just want the simplest and lightest laptop available and this would be perfect for them. As for college students, eh not so much. Yeah it is light but comon, students are used to carrying backpacks weighing 20 pounds for their entire lives. Are they really going to tell the difference between 20 pounds and 18 pounds? (This would be a comparison with 15 pounds of 'stuff' and a 5 pound vs 3 pound laptop. If I am not mistaken, students often carry their laptops in their backpacks nowadays considering the multitude of laptop backpacks available. This laptop will by no means be a 'budget laptop' like the poster a few posts above mentioned. A budget notebook with be a Dell Inspiron, Acer, Gateway, etc. If they have their mind set, I see no reason not to get the Macbook or upgrade to the Macbook Pro.

In perfect response I should tell you first, that I happily shelled out 3,500 € for my souped up Powerbook G4, I'm still typing on. Still feels rock solid, still doesn't feel that dated and the only gripe I have with it is the deteriorated battery.

Given that I am perfectly happy to shell out even 2,500 € for this new ultrasexy portable design. If it really uses solid state stuff, battery will last like...hmmm...up to 7 or 8 hrs?

Definitely a perfect replacement for my portable needs. It should be perfect for taking notes on the road, surf the net and mess a little with iPhoto. That's all I need a portable for. The heavy work would still be on my desktop and my Powerbook (though I believe the new ultraportable will outperform the PB in several tasks).

So, in simple words:

MUST RESIST BUYING IMPULSE!!!

Hooray for my first post. Maybe. I feel I may be losing something by giving in.

So why is a versatile little, network oriented machine that does the basics and can flawlessly tap into internet so useless? Seriously, the future of personal computers for most people is an easy to use controller/screen for the unbelievably-mega-computer that is the internet.

Apple innovates. You know this. So why dismiss something because you don't see the use yet?

Great post! and I believe that you are correct in many aspects of you assessment, however the question that most of the people here are still jumping the gun on is the specs, since there is no clear indication to what the specs of the system will be.

One thing that is know is the clear market trends that of those that are buying a laptop; to displace the PC at home. If you also consider that most people also use the laptop for music and images (is it fair to say that those that would buy a laptop also have a dicam?). Another, and much more larger market share of laptops is the business world, but here :apple: is still not a major player.

As far as college student, I have a sister that is an average college student, bought her a MacBook last summer, and I had to do a HD upgrade for her since she was eating away at more HD space, than even I could generate creating digital content (images, vids).

I believe that the system will see today will appeal to a smaller market share in Apples own market share of laptop (well, because many just got a recent one) but in term will see substantial growth in and I hate to use the word "vein" market where specs is not the main concern, nor is their productivity. Specs is the driving force of many people here, and rightly so if this is what THEY are after.

Now that is not so bad, this is vastly larger market apportunity for Apple, where many of the Windoers :D will finally make the cross over to OsX because of the pretty design if the price point is right. Since we still don't have full spec, it is had to say how this system will get current Mac users on the bandwagon to get one of these. For me a HD that is anything under 100GB is much to small to be productive, and I need a powerful GPU which is covered currently by my MBP.

I am sure there will lot's of takers of this systems. Sure it will be a success and a market trend setter. Ultimately, this will create larger market share for Apple, stock will hit 200+ (make me some money!) and get the rewards of economy of scales where Apple products become more affordable. Ah, not to mention more native apps in OS X! :D

I believe many here will be discourage when they loose the exclusivity of been that guy sitting at the airport with a Mac... and I will be celebrating when this happens, as I will have more choices for applications as I'm very content delivery and execution of Apple's approach of Appliance PC(TM), make right, make it tight, make it work! Yeah baby!

I think that mockup is very un-apple becuase of the taper and overall ugliness.

First thing I thought when I saw the mockup was Dell XPS. Then I thought, Apple copying off of Dell. Lastly, I said to myself, the world is truly coming to an end.

If they want to compete with Asus (eeePC) and the UMPC market they'd better charge a lot less.

I dare say if they do release something of the sub-notebook variety they aren't exactly competing in the same bracket as the Asus - OR with UMPCs. I like the Asus, but it's cheap in more than just price, it looks it and feels it. Also, UMPCs are still bloody expensive for what you get in terms of price and usability.

Palm obviously realized that there simply isn't a market for such a device and pulled the plug. I think it would be incredibly strange if Apple now went ahead and released a very similar device for double the price.

The Foleo was not a laptop. It was a 'smartphone companion' as they termed it. It allowed you to use your Treo in a more extended way by syncing and having better access to email services etc - in no way was it a full laptop computer or 'sub-notebook'. It was a pointless, expensive mess - which is why they pulled the plug.

Not a big fan of that tapered look. What's the point in the laptop being thin just at the front and fat again at the back?
I would prefer it to have the thickness leveled out and retain a nice rectangular side profile rather than a wedge shape.
I can't see Steve going for it either. Let's hope I'm right.

For the More-than-one-Mac crowd

I get the feeling from all the possibilities and worries presented in the various threads that the apple subnotebook will be a computer for people who already have a computer.

web browsing, email, quicktime, itunes and all on airport, that's what I need on my lap (when it's not otherwise occupied  ). I've got plenty of horsepower for real work with my other machines.

i say the less ports the better :apple: - just give me fast, easy syncing and a long battery life.

hmmm... I'm not a big fan of that design by Wired.

It doesn't really go with Apples current designs at all, it looks too much like the old clamshell iBook or the old colourful iMacs.

If something like this even comes out tomorrow I think it'll look like a Macbook pro that's about half the thickness and has a 12 inch screen, now that'd look slick.

I don't believe it, I am certain there will be two colours, the same as the new iPod classics, and I can't see a tapered design, components are square so using a tapered design would leave a lot of space unused and would disrupt the cooling airflow inside.

What's the point in the laptop being thin just at the front and fat again at the back?

Because look at the picture the marketing department will get to use.

My jaw dropped when I saw that. Then I saw the side profile and realized what they'd done. (Also note how the ridge sticks out at the bottom -- makes it look smaller, still.) But I think that the appeal is largely because marketing will get to show a "paper-thin" notebook to grab everyone's attention.

MacWorld has had me in a jumble. It's 4am and I am still up freakin' out about it.

It's Ok for you lot stateside, all you've got to do for the next few hours is lie in your pit and dream about what new toy you're going to buy in the morning. Think of us here in Europe, the keynote starts at 5pm (GMT), you think we are going to be productive at work today?

i still burn CD's and DVD's regularly including video production stuff
so i guess that's my reason for it being impractical

and also, if i had an ultra portable laptop, id want to be able to watch DVD's when traveling

I totally agree. What's the point of portable if you can't bring some DVDs on the plane?

Other than that, I am so excited. Even thinking of getting up at 2am to watch the launch!

I still don't see the purpose for such a device unless it's priced at sub $500. Might as well just have a macbook.
