Yes it does, doesn't it? Have to go to the Apple store and get the pb a new logic board on Monday so I'm all backed up. I'll have a go when it's all sorted. Thanks.

you can hide files.. but it is a bit complicated.. something about putting a period before and after the name..than opening up terminal to unhide it or something.. so i just decided to go the .dmg route..

Great idea but unfortunately that would also allow viruses to run too

Why? Even if you had a known Windows virus .exe file and ran it on your mac in an emulator what would it do and whatwould be the end result? I figure "not much and not much"

Maybe it tries to read you outlook addressbook and mess with the registry or but something in the startup folder none of this will work. A windows virus by it's nature does things that only make sense on a windows machine.

On the ther hand if you had a dual boot mac or were running XP in a virtual enrironment thenthe whole of windows is there and it do whatever XP does on PC hardware but that still will not include messing with the Mac OS environment

Quit program button like X in Windows windows

Yes, I have been wanting this for a long time. A simple X in the top right corner that closes the Application, not just the window(I realize this is way too much like Windows-but it is a good feature). OSX should utilize all the best features, not just the ones Apple came up with.

Being able to use Select All everywhere using the right mouse button and being able to drag a file into like a little piece of a window and have the window you're dragging it to come to the front.

Enable active corners for Expose, then drag your file via the appropriate corner to access the desired Finder (or application) window.

Things I'd like to see...

  • Consistent implementation of the Home and End keys. There are so many ways to get to the start and end of a line, varying by application. Sometimes it's ctrl-a and crtl-e. Sometimes it's cmmd-left and cmmd-right (such as in Firefox, where no other keys work). Sometimes it's Home and End. Sometime Home and End go to the top and bottom of the document (as mentioned above)
  • Better handling of network drives and folders, as mentioned above. It's among the big reasons I use my Dell laptop much more than my Mac mini at work.
  • More sensible window layering. Sometimes I'll have two Safari windows open (multiple tabs each) and then the Downloads window open behind them. When I click from my foreground window the Downloads, and then close it, many time the background window comes to the front. What the...?
  • A picture viewer (ala Windows Picture and Fax Viewer) like so many people have said. Just not the idiot Print dialog box that it has.
  • Ability to return a file from the Trash to its original folder (kinda like the old Put Away that pre-OS X users will remember, only with longer-lasting memory).
  • A basic undelete feature (okay, so Windows doesn't come with this, but I still want it!).

There are probably many more I can't think of at the moment. And there are many many features and aspects of OS X that I'd like to see in Windows to make my days more bearable... Wait, I take that back! Those are many of the things that make using a Mac so special and enjoyable. :D

Finally, for those wanting a button on a window to Quit an application, I personally am able to move the pointer to the application menu and down to Quit just about as quickly as I can aim it at the small window control dots. If you get in that habit you might find it speedy enough and you'll be able to stay on the mouse. Of course if you're a righty, you have you left hand free to rapidly hit cmmd-Q (which is a very fluid motion for long-time Mac users). And on a more philosophical level, having a button on a window that controls the app would break the fundamental distinction between windows and apps (as opposed to in Windows where in most cases the window is the app). Granted, Apple breaks this in some places, but that doesn't make it okay. ;)

Edit: forgot to mention a huge pet peeve: I want files (especially MS Word) written in 12 point Times New Roman to be just as readable at 100% on the Mac as on Windows. I know it's something about DPI and 72 vs. 96 blah blah blah... I don't care. I used to know all that stuff, but what I know now is it's a pain in the a$$ to either have to zoom in when reading on a Mac, or to get zoomed-in documents when receiving files from Mac users on Windows.

Several things I like from Windows

Don't be mad at me but I like several things:

1) Remember in IE that they have Full Screen mode? I would like to have one on safari :)

2) Solitarie game :)

3) Maybe a better folder viewing instead of lame ol' blue folder.

I think that's it.

Good point, I did another way if they're stupid and clueless: I use no access under Info window. :)

Both these have been covered earlier in the thread:

1) Make a bookmark and edit the address to

javascript:self.moveTo(0,0);self.resizeTo(screen.availWidth,screen.availHeight);

2) Download Solitaire XL

I'm pretty sure supremedesigner was talking about a "kiosk" mode in which the browser's page view takes over the entire screen leaving just a few UI elements.

Aahh... I see... don't have a trick for that, I'm afraid... ;)

Edit: Searching is good. Full screen is possible via Extensions in Firefox and Saft for Safari... :)

iTunes Comment Box

One thing the Windows version of iTunes has that the Mac version doesn't - the ability to type in a hard return in the comments field on a file. In order to list something like the following:

name, saxophone
name, piano
name, bass
name, drums

you have to copy and paste from textedit. I can put many hard returns in the lyrics field but not the comments... every variation of <enter> closes the info box. But I can ctrl-enter on the windows version and get to the next line in the comments box.

I've "suggested" this to Apple after every point release, but to no avail

Saft will do that, but every Safari update seems to break it.

Drag an item and opens feature doesn't work with xp .. might be OS X only feature

I know that doesn't work in xp .. just tried that in xp

When you just have folders open in window view, holding a file over a folder will not open that folder.

If on the other hand you are in explorer view and you drag a file, folder or whatever from the right side pane or another window over a folder in the tree on the left pane, the tree will open up to the next level.

As for other things:
1. I don't care for the red window close gadget in the upper left of the window. I have been know to accidently close the window from time to time when all I want to do is click the back button in finder or safari or whatever.

2. I agree will all those who want the option for menus per window. For one thing, it will make the transition from win to mac much easier for the new mac user. For another it will make usability much more productive for those of us who have multi-monitor setups or very large monitors and have several apps open at one time. I couldn't even imagine using a 30" Cinema Display, or if I'm really rich 2 of them, and having to traverse from the lower right of the screen to the upper left to do anything.

Anything that will make the transition easier for new users is good for the mac community. I remember when I used my first mac and was very parinoid the first time I had to eject a floppy disk from the drive. Who in their right mind would have thought that dragging the floppy disk icon to the trash can was anything more than throwing the contents of the floppy disk away, never to be recovered??? Thing that go in the trash are things that you don't want, right?

3. I am a mouse oriented person so I like to do things with the mouse. The mouse was one of the big selling point of the early macs. Look at this great UI and look at what you can do without ever touching the keyboard. Well now there seems to be a whole lot of things that you can't do with the mouse. You must hold down this key while simultaniously pressing these keys in this order while standing on one leg and barking at the moon on Tuesdays. Or 'it's easy as pie. Just open a terminal window and type':

florian@bender:~$echo "My dirty little secret" >> clearfile
florian@bender:~$cat clearfile
My dirty little secret
florian@bender:~$openssl enc -aes256 -e -in clearfile -out encrypted
enter aes-256-cbc encryption password:
Verifying - enter aes-256-cbc encryption password:
florian@bender:~$ls
clearfile encrypted
florian@bender:~$rm clearfile
florian@bender:~$cat encrypted
Salted__ioy~z«ùî$òÜ^↨5U¨ø¶)x°Y¢&ÿ6ö·Í×'ó£t*öçELý
florian@bender:~$openssl enc -aes256 -d -out clearfile -in encrypted
enter aes-256-cbc decryption password:
florian@bender:~$ls
clearfile encrypted
florian@bender:~$cat clearfile
My dirty little secret
florian@bender:~$echo 'yay'
yay

What could be easier than that. (I know that not all of that is typed in, but come on...)

Unleash the power of the mouse. And while your at it, give us more right button control. It's a graphical user interface for a reason.

4. As for networking, maybe I'm doing something wrong here but in order to be able to connect from my mac to my pc's, the mac would only do it if my pc's had a password logon. The pc's don't require the mac to have a password in order for the pc's to connect to it. Also, do I have to put everything I want to share on the mac into the public folder? Can't I access the drives directly like I can on the pc's from the mac?

5. Not a windows thing, but... When I switched the folder view to show icons preview and resized the icons, the icons in all windows are now over lapping each other ( I know that all windows is selected). Why wasn't the icon spacing updated? I now have to correct the spacing of the icons for every window when it is opened. I there an easier why to do this?

6. In Safari, when I click on the bookmarks drop down menu, it doesn't show all of my bookmarks. If I want to see all of them I have to select show all bookmarks which opens a 'frame' in the browser window where I can select the BM that I want and then have to close it by selecting hide bookmarks. I know that I can also open and close using the bookmark button on left side of browser. Just wondering why I can't see them in the bookmark menu like in IE favorites.

7. Mac windows need to be resizable from all sides. period. The windows need to be sizable to full screen with a hotkey, menu item or on-screen button. If you are using a multi-monitor setup then the window should go to full screen only for the monitor that the window was occupying. Full screen is very useful for those doing graphics, etc.

8. I have 2 monitors on my mac. If I just want to power it on from an off state to check something real quick and only turn on the left monitor (because that is all I need for what I have to do), the system doesn't realize that the second monitor is not powered on. Any windows that had previously be opened in the right monitor still open in the right monitor position, even though it is off. Mostly an annoyance since I must turn on both monitors every time I startup my system. There are reasons why I don't leave my system on all the time.

Well that is enough for now. Maybe more later.

Thanks for letting me participate.

Sorry if this is a repeat, but I don't want to wade through 138 posts.

My picks:

Mount Rainier support for CD-RW drives--OS support in Leopard would be ideal (BTW, MS is supposed to be supporting it in Vista)

Built-in defrag utility (yes, there is a need for it and I shouldn't have to pay a lot of money for this basic function)

Might this be a "Snap to grid" issue? In the View Options window(let) (cmmd-J) there's a checkbox for it. Might not be that simple, though...

If, when bookmarking a page, you specify that it goes into the Bookmarks Menu "collection" then it will appear in the menu. In IE for Windows, all favorites folders are children of the main Favorites menu--this includes the folder called "Links" which has things that appear in a toolbar along the top of your IE window. In Safari, the Bookmarks Menu is just one collection among many. Others include the Bookmarks Bar (appears along the top of the window) and custom folders that hold things you don't need immediate menu access to. I personally find it a bit weird that in IE you have a folder (with the mind-numbingly undescriptive name Links) that contains bookmarks that already appear in the toolbar on the window.

Hmm, do the monitors not going into standby when the computer turns off? I've only had iMacs for the past several years so I'm not familiar with this, but on the PCs I use, the monitors go to standby when I put the computer to standby or turn it off. I rarely touch the monitors' power switches.

That can be more annoying than you think. I once had some Excel menu pallettes open on my external monitor at work so they wouldn't clutter my workspace. When I took my powerbook home those pallettes were still on the external monitor. I had to dig an old monitor out of my shed so I could get to them and move them back onto my powerbook's screen.

Now this may be more Excel than osX, but really, it should have known.

Encryption

Hello,

I gave platypus and cocoadialogs a try, here's a very crude ui for those that 'yuck' don't like using the terminal :)

Just drop a file on Encryptoer and follow the dialogs (bug: openssl errors aren't displayed yet)

I think you also can use it by selecting a file and then open with... Encryptoer.

Im sure it has already been said, but the only thing I love windows for over OSX, is the rate and smoothness at wich you can move / resize windows. I dont understand why it is not Instant and seemless in OSX... how hard can it be? How much processing power does it take to resize a window on the fly? How is it that such a horrible OS like Windows can do it so perfectly? and a sweet OS like tiger cant?

That is my only complaint.

This is because XP doesn't resize the window on the fly like OS X does. It just draws a temporary box that shows how large/small the window will be if you release the mouse.
