Update!! Adding two more things that probably need fixing on this, the first release Neo. Hopefully a MacOS update can provide fixes (except for the speakers and the keyboard). I really like the computer and am keeping it.
----
My idiosyncratic list of things that don't seem quite right on the Neo (well, my Neo at least!). None are deal breakers (although I would really like the Facetime bug to get fixed). Have you found stuff that isn't quite right?

1. Facetime - video is zoomed in and I can't seem to change it to the normal view. I see normal view until I am on a call, then basically just my eyes and nose for the person on the other end. Reading elsewhere it might be tied to Center Stage on other machines, and so perhaps its absence on the Neo is messing something up?

2. External display (Studio Display, original one) - two problems! a) choice of resolutions is very limited and only default (1920x1080) and 4K are crisp. The intermediate setting (2560x1440) is some gosh-awful fuzzy rendering that really isn't useable. I suspect this might be a limitation of the A18 Pro? b) External display, if you choose Advanced>Show Resolutions as List, there is no way to go back to the default icon list, even if you reset the switch. The list has extremely limited choices.

3. Speakers - OK, more of a whine here, but I hope Apple redesigns on the next iteration. While the sound quality is good, it is too dynamic. At a given setting quiet sounds are inaudible and loud sounds are annoyingly loud. Also, the sound is super directional: OUT from the machine, rather than UP towards the humble listener, so you lose much of the listening experience.

4. I use the globe/fn key to switch languages (easy access to greek letters). The key is unpredictably responsive on my Neo. I have to press it a bunch of times or occasionally for a long time to switch between English and Greek. I haven't tested if this problem is specific to this use of the globe/fn key. There is no unpredictability on the other Macs I have used.

5. The keyboard seems to be getting shiny already. I am certain this one is going to be annoying.

There was a slight cursor movement lag/jumpiness on 26.3, and 26.4 fixed it. Strongly recommend updating

Speakers are alright, not great but for $500 it beats every other PC.

This is an excellent little laptop. Only thing I'd ask for is an extra USB controller so both ports are USB3 speed, and some extra battery life. And 12GB ram of course 😉

I think the external display issues are probably issues with MacOS scaling more than with the Neo. The Neo cannot support 5k and so has to scale based on 4k which does not fit well the Studio Display at intermediate resolutions because of the way MacOS does scaling. If the A19 pro can support 5k the issue could be solved next year.
Still I would give BetterDiplay Pro a try, sometimes it does miracles.

Unfortunatelly it was not fixed, the cursor still jumps/lags when hovering with your mouse to any border of screen. Reported this in feedback assistant as well as other people I believe, but no fix was done yet, if it was fixed for you, you are very lucky, ppl are also starting to return the Neos because of this, can't say I haven't thought about doing it too..

It’s a lot better in 26.4 for sure. Maybe it still happens but it hasnt been explicitely noticeable for me. Will keep an eye out.

Overall the laptop is way smoother and snappier on 26.4

Weight, just 60 grams south of MBA M1.
I'd like 12GB (16 would be perfect) of RAM.
I like keyboard (typing experience, not color) and touchpad.

EDIT: thermals are not very good but likely improving this would increase weight even more.

Nothing needed for my needs.

  • Facetime never used on my travel / fun laptop.

  • External displays - I'd use my dual Studio displays connected to my Mac Studio.

  • Audiophile lossless sound output - I'd use my Mac Studio w/ iFi lossless audio tracks.

My Neo does it perfectly and for the price point, can't ask for more.

It's the same for me.

I'm still using my old Logitech 5.1 surround sound system with my Mac mini and also am using three monitors. I don't need all of that when going portable with my Neo.

I have noticed a trend on MR where a lot of people are wanting extra RAM, more battery and ports, when the MBP already has the extras. Granted, I get that a lot of people like the slightly smaller, colorful Neo but,I don't think it wise to try and turn the Neo into a MBP replacement, because it isn't meant to be especially for the price.

The Air and Pro exist for those that need more RAM, more ports, etc.

Having three spec levels has worked well for the desktop Macs and iPads.

In a lot of cases, having a specced library of devices can be of benefit. I think that the rhetoric we see on here is from spec chasers who constantly mumble on about " future-proofing" (there is no such thing). If someone truly needed 12GB of RAM, they would know it and wouldn't be using a Neo.

The JayzTwoCents YouTube channel did a good video recently about how you really can't future proof any computer purchase as hardware and software evolves quickly.

One should concentrate on getting the specs they need today and not worry about what specs they might need 2-5 years in the future.

I've seen posts were people have posted RAM usage on their Macs and MacBooks. MacOS is very good at using what ever amount of RAM is in the system efficiently. MacOS will use more RAM if it is available but still work just fine with less RAM.

The MBP is bigger, thicker, and has fans, also more expensive.

we like Neo because of its size- its the smallest macbook, and it runs a real os unlike trash ipads

Set the resolution to 1204x753 to take advantage of integer scaling. This is the resolution divisible by 2 and it gives the sharpest image, although not the largest. I just got a 15" MBA and integer scaling is the only choice that is not fuzzy. Default is awful.

Check on macOS 26.4
Sadly, still zoomed in after updating. The problem must not be too widespread since I haven't heard anyone else complaining so far. I will try following up with Apple.

At the end of the day the Neo is an iPhone that can run macOS, give it a break guys.

It's for a specific target market: Students and people who just do simpler tasks in a browser and other tools. It's perfectly fine for most people. A19 Pro and A20 Pro will make it much better and I am sure they'll have dual USBC ports and better support for external monitors down the line. It's a good move by Apple to bring more people into the ecosystem.

Get a MacBook Air on sale if you're not happy with Neo, it's a few hundred bucks more (constantly on sale).

Got the same issue, fixed it before 26.4 with booting into safeboot - guided by apple support.
Any idea how to raise this as a bug with apple?
