iPhone 4 early upgrade eligibility was 6 months early, right? Like you can upgrade up to 6 months before you can upgrade without paying an ETF. I think I remember that from the keynote.

Either way, if you bought an iPhone on launch date, you can upgrade to the new iPhone without any ETF once it launches in a year. So I'm guessing the 6 months early upgrade means you can upgrade to the new iPhone after buying a current iPhone in 6 months.

But I'm not sure if I'm misinterpreting this or not.

6 months means that if you are eligible from the time the iPhone is released until those 6 months, you can get it at 199/299. For example, if the iPhone comes out in october and your upgrade is in may, you can't upgrade at 199/299 because thats 7 months away. But, if your eligibility date is within October to April, you can get it at 199/299.

I bought two iPhone 4's on the first day, both of my lines are eligible for upgrade:

AT&T Upgrade Status:
Yes - You are eligible for an upgrade at a discounted price.

When I go to the store, everything has discounted prices including iPhone 4.

I did also purchase iPhone 4 on first day and when I check its telling me i have to wait till 11/25/2011...it sucks, I guess I will have to order it on 2nd line and just switch it.

AT&T Upgrade Status:
• You are not Eligible at this Time - You can take advantage of our no commitment pricing. Additional discounts may be available on 11/25/2011

iPhone Upgrade Status:
• You are not Eligible at this Time - As a valued AT&T customer, we can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a reduced discount, along with a 2-year commitment. You may qualify for a full discount on a standard iPhone upgrade on 11/25/2011

Whether you are eligible for an upgrade or not, you can still proceed to the online store.
Do you want to continue?

I dont know how AT&T goes about determining this, but I bought my iPhone 4around July 25th when online orders were available again and I have been eligible for an upgrade since August 10th, 2011..... I have a family plan with 3 lines two of them are iphone plans and one is a blackberry with a $15 250mb plan.

I did also purchase phone on day one, I have three lines and I cant upgrade till 11/25/2011.

This is one of the reasons I get nervous around this time. At least until they make a formal announcement - and even then you never know till you go to buy.

Ill be shifting to my second line as well if thats the case. They are each off by a year, so one line is always near the two year mark.

AT&T Upgrade Dates

With every iPhone I've had up until the iPhone 4, my upgrade date was pushed back by exactly 1 year when I bought the phone (except for the original iPhone which didn't affect upgrade dates as it wasn't subsidized). With both the 3G and 3GS I signed a 2 year contract and only paid $299 for the phones. But with the iPhone 4 my upgrade date was bumped back by 20 months with a 2 year contract and paying $299 as well.. So even though I bought it on launch day I'm not eligible for upgrade until February 25th.

Has anyone else had this happen to them with the purchase of their iPhone 4?

Yep.... Feb 2012 for me, bought on launch day (stood in line to pick it up even!)

I went to my local AT&T store yesterday to see if I can get one of our 6 numbers on our family plan pushed up a month because my 3GS screen is shattered. They said normally they could do it for Android or other phones but Apple goes through their inventory or database or whatever to make sure they don't allow that to happen.

You mean you signed a 2 yr (24 month) contract and want to know why you can't upgrade for at least 20 months?

Actually the contract is for service, and doesn't directly reflect the device. It's been determined from many different statements from other members that there is no clear and concise meaning to how AT&T chooses to offer upgrade eligibility to their customers. Giving upgrades to certain customers without clear disclosure as to why is something that should be regulated solely on behalf of the consumers rights. Why is my eligibility different from another person who bought the same device on the exact same day and has carried the exact same plan?

Please explain because I've compared the contracts and they are virtually the same yet one is currently eligible and the other is not.

I got a question or let just say what would you guys do in my shoes.

Okay we are on a family plan with 3 lines.

Line 1 has iPhones 3GS ($15.00 Data)

Line 2 has iPhones 4 ($30.00 Data)

Line 3 has iPhone 4 ($15.00)

We have unlimited txt, 700 min.

Line 1 is eligible upgrade for an upgrade

Line 2 is eligible not until Feb 2012

Line 3 is eligible not until Dec 2012

Now I want to get the iPhone 5 (if it comes out on Oct 14) whats the best way to go about getting it. Should I use Line 1 to get the upgrade and how would I go about doing that?

You think they will give you the early upgrade like that last iPhone 4?

We are on a premier account and last time was a bit of scare getting my iPhone 4 cause I had to call to order it wouldn't let me order online. I can't remember if premier are open for pre-order early in the morning like say 12am or so

Thanks for that, I totally agree. There needs to be some consistency in how AT&T picks upgrade dates. Many people bought the iPhone 4 on launch day and some have been eligible for upgrade for months, others recently, others will be in a month or so, others (like myself) around the end of February, and others not eligible until the middle of next year.

It makes no sense, and I want an explanation from AT&T.

My line has been eligible since july but my wife's wasn't until 12-28-12 as of 2 days ago. Now she will be eligible for full discount on 8-20-12. Bought my 3gs in july 2010 and eligible july 2011. Att's upgrade policies are very inconsistent.

I thought this was discussed many times before, but AT&T's upgrade eligibility is actually pretty straightforward. You have to look at how much you spend each month on YOUR line. Remember that texting plans do not count.

Example family plan:

Line 1:
Main minutes package - $60
Data - $25
Total spend: $85

That line has $85 "worth" of upgrade eligibility according to AT&T. That line is most likely eligible 15 months after an upgrade

Line 2:
Add-a-line minutes package: $10
Data - $25
Total spend: $35

That line has $35 "worth" of upgrade eligibility according to AT&T. That's not very much. Probably 20 months for that line to be eligible.

I was a day one adopter and I am also eligible for an upgrade November 25th. Although! Earlier this year I had an eligibility date of June 2011. About 2 months ago I dropped down to the $15/month data plan since I have wifi about 90% of the time. I have a feeling that is why my date got pushed from June '11 to November '11.

For the rest of you that have an eligibility date of November do you have the cheapest data package? I do know for certain that ATT upgrades work based on how much you pay per line, not total. I think someone else mentioned that a few posts back.

Purchased iPhone 4 on launch day. Original update eligibility was 11/26/11. Now it says I can upgrade early on an iPhone only, all other phones are full price. Yay!

ive been an iPhone user since day 1 with the original iphone and unlimited data and texts. i wasnt "technically" (according to ATT's website) eligible for an upgrade until several months after the iphone 4 release date but when the iphone 4 finally got annouced, Apple and ATT had this deal or something that allowed anyone eligible for an upgrade during the same year be immedietaly eligible. Of course, i upgraded to the iPhone 4 right away :D. I'm pretty sure they'll do the exact same thing again with the new iPhone 4s/5.

A few months ago, my upgrade eligibility was around October 2012, but now ATT's website says im not eligible for an upgrade until December of 2012.
I spoke to some lady at ATT and asked her about the factors that determine my "Upgrade Eligibility" date and why it changed and she said its based off of lots of things. The specific reason to why mine got changed is because i removed my 'early nights and weeknds' special thing and had one month where i didnt pay my bill on time . She also said that majority of the people who have upgrade eligibility dates pushed back are people who dont pay their phone bill on time and constantly have their phone disconnected because of no payment as well as people who constantly change their plans.

Not eligible til March 5th, but my line is only $25-$35 a month depending on if I enable 2GB of data (just during the summer when traveling). (Bought last July.) So I'm not expecting any miracles unless they move everyone's date up 6 months like they did for the iPhone 4.

Well if I pay $175 to cancel the contract and pay $199 at Verizon it will cost me $374... If I buy it with an early upgrade discount at AT&T it will cost me $450. So it is cheaper to leave.

The thing is if I pay the ETF I can certainly stay with AT&T but that puts me (and many others, I don't pretend that MY action means anything) in the position where I have my choice of almost any carrier.

Since AT&T is generally viewed the least favorably I could see them losing a lot of customers.

Honestly you would come out the same. Don't forget about the activation charges and the tax

for the $250 "early upgrade", do you also have to pay tax on the full value of the phone? or is it really $250+18 upgrade fee?

That decision depends on where you live. Since your tag indicates Calif, then you will have to pay the tax on the full value of the device. It does not matter if you purchase an iPhone or any other phone device.

Blame your state govenment.
