I thought this was discussed many times before, but AT&T's upgrade eligibility is actually pretty straightforward. You have to look at how much you spend each month on YOUR line. Remember that texting plans do not count.

Actually I have not seen this information in the past couple of months of reading MacRumors, so thank you for posting it. It makes a lot of sense as to why my eligibility dates seem to be a lot sooner than so many other people's, e.g. currently my iPhone 4 is eligible for full upgrade 11/5/2011 but I bought it in November 2010 on a 2-year contract.

That decision depends on where you live. Since your tag indicates Calif, then you will have to pay the tax on the full value of the device. It does not matter if you purchase an iPhone or any other phone device.

Blame your state govenment.

Taxes suck and kill a good deal in California :(

That's why if I get anything other than the iPhone I will only purchase something from Amazon Wireless or Target Mobile since they are tax free :)

Makes it alot easier to sell phones and buy new ones on Craigslist later on without losing any money...

Im hopping they give me an upgrade, unfortunately I'm not eligible till February due to the fact my father decided to upgrade his then loose it then upgrade that one so we have none left. I will be upset if they don't but that is life i guess, i can deal with my awesome iPhone 4. Im sure i could jailbreak it and get a decent assistant if its not provided. lol i hope they give me an upgrade :D

Get an early upgrade for 399/499. Sell your iPhone 4 for about $350-$400 and you will have to pay less out of pocket :)

Until when can I hope that my upgrade eligibility will change? It has not yet - still at 2.11.12.

Upgrades are very simple on ATT.

$99 and up on primary line (voice/data). ATT excludes all texting Plans and taxes and FAN accounts from this calculation and it's on a 3 month average calculation.

If you meet this you should qualify for 12 month upgrades.

Secondary lines are usually 18-21 months.

Of note after this last time primary lines can use this 12 month cycle (if they qualify udder the $99 primary line rule). ATT is forcing all lines regardless of primary or secondary to wait 20-22 month after this last upgrade. ATT actually made this decision quietly earlier this year.

So those on primary lines $99 and up (voice/data) have this one last upgrade (the 12 month cycle) than go on the 20-22 month cycle.

Sprint just did away with their primere program (12 month upgrade).

What I am saying is well known in ATT and just check it out over in Howard forums.

ETF for those who upgraded to any smartphone June 2010 and later is $325-$10/month now. Not the $175 the OP is thinking.

I think they add 250$ now so it's like 450/550 so that is a bit more redicylou, if I can get that much well that's a longshot but I can try. But I'm going to try going to the AT&T store and fanagleing a upgrade first.
