Think we'll ever get landscape home screen?

The Kindle App does this very nicely, where you can lock the screen so it doesn't rotate. You know, since a lot of people read books while laying down. I would love to be able to turn off the coverflow in the iPod app, as most of my music is from CDs and I have not added the album art yet because I am lazy. haha. Plus I hate coverflow, and really wish you could shut it off.

Just my two cents. I couldn't care less about the landscape stuff, because the only time I go to landscape is when the text is too small on a Web site to read in portrait. I can't stand the wide keyboard in landscape...I'm too used to the more cramped one, and make more mistakes on the wide one.

Cover Flow is actually pretty nice once you get some pictures up there haha, try the Tune Up program it'll help you organized and find the proper album artwork, heck even Apple does it, under Find album artwork

I want to revive this thread, because now with the iPad I think this question has become relevant again!

I often find myself using an app in landscape mode and then coming back to the home screen being in the wrong orientation. I also like to hold my device in landscape...

Same with the lock screen. At least for me it would make sense.
Of course then we would need a screen rotation lock as well.

There's several apps for that.

Off the top of my head, I know that ADWLauncher (review: http://openalexandria.com/2010/10/09/adw-launcher-is-a-free-customized-home-screen-tool/) or LauncherPro (http://www.launcherpro.com/), and is available on the Market.

Your also might want to look into QuickDesk (doubletap home to get a translucent shade that you can drop anything into) and Smart Taskbar (inside any app or homescreen, drag from very edge of screen to opposite to open up a translucent shade filled with categorized shortcuts). All you have to do is press BACK after you're done with the newly launched app to resume what you were doing.

All this without needing to jailbreak / root / modify phone in any way!

;)

P.S. I wouldn't be surprised if this comment never saw the light of day. I mean, I'd never associate your product's company with heavy-handed moderation. =P

Now that we have the landscape keyboard through out the native apps and (hopefully) soon on all the 3rd party apps, wouldn't it be cool to have a landscape mode on the home screen too?

I'm thinking the icons all stay in the same spots, they just rotate so they're right side up. Same with the 4 in the dock, they don't change positions, just rotate. That way, they only things that would move would be the carrier info/time/battery indicator.

It seems like it'd be pretty cool to switch from app to app without having to go in and out of landscape mode.

So what's everybody think? Mmm, mmm, mmm?

jailbreak! there is an app for that

I doubt it..just not enough screen real estate like the iPad. If you really want it you can jailbreak your phone. I forgot the name of the tweak but it allows landscape homescreen.

noo i dont seem it being practical.. and theres really no point.. :apple::apple:

No point for you. It makes perfect sense to me. One thing is that I have big hands and every app that I type in I do so in landscape. It's annoying changing the way I hold the phone constantly. I would prefer if the lock button would lock the phone (system wide) in whichever orientation I choose.

I think that's a legitimate feature request. I find it interesting that some people's response to requests for features is, "Well, I wouldn't use that, so why bother?"
In my opinion, the ability to provide some degree of 'customization' will help keep the IOS platform robust without overloading it. I think that's part of the argument by folks using Droids- that platform allows for more customization. And if you don't want to use a particular feature, you just don't.
