I've had a chromebook before. I used it whilst I was in collage. I had a normal 15 inch windows laptop but preferred the chromebook because it was faster (SSD), and was more portable. This was during my second stint in collage (Nursing) and my assignments consisted of essays, presentations and concept maps and the chromebook was perfect for that. During my first degree (Molecular Biology and genetics) I could never have gotten away with using a chromebook as it wouldn't have run the software that I needed and they didn't exist then. I think chrome books are great for people who just browse the net and do some light word processing. Anything more complex and you need a real computer. My chromebook went strong for 2 years until my Fiance broke it. He'd been banned from using it for 2 years and then I relented and let him use it and within 3 weeks it was broken

Anyhow after my windows laptop packed up earlier this year. I considered getting a chromebook as I have very limited computing (Browsing, iTunes, video streaming, email) needs now that I am no longer in education. However I decided against it because it wasn't much different in terms of functionality to my iPad air 2 and I figured if I was going to limit myself to a chromebook I may as well just buy a keyboard for my iPad. In the end I went with the Macbook Air. It was't too expensive and is still a real computer, a lot more powerful than I actually need. I like the fact that It's light and has an SSD just like the chromebook. At least I can manage my iTunes library on there and it fits in with all my other apple stuff. I didn't see the point in getting the MBP because it's just overkill for someone like me. I only use my MBA about 3-4 times a month.

I do think chrome books are viable options for a lot of people. As a lot of people's computer usage really revolves around, emails, web browsing, Facebook, netflix and listening to music. All of which a chromebook or a tablet can do with ease.
