Aside from the software differences, both First Generation and Series 1/2 are physically
The same, with the exception of Series 2 having a slightly thicker casing due to the larger battery variant.
An important difference is the ceramic back now also on the aluminum Series 2. The composite back on aluminum Series 0 & 1 seems to deteriorate from sweat, so particles are coming off.

I'm just now experiencing that on mine quite massively and still ponder whether to go through the hassle of turning it in under AppleCare. Mainly I'm worried that they have to open it to replace the back and that the re-sealing would be less effective in terms of waterproofness.

Interesting. I own only the stainless Models and haven't experienced this. If it were me, I would contact Apple and exercise your options.

I'm still getting the hang of the watch but it's pretty nifty. How do I set up the different corners?

You can change the complications using the Apple Watch App on your iPhone, or you can hard-press the screen while on a watch face, then click "customize" at the bottom, then you should be able to alter the watch face and chance things such as colors, complications, and details of the watch face you have selected.

I mostly use the Modular watch face, since I feel it gives me the most information at a glance. I have the date and time at the top, I have the battery percentage at the bottom-right, the current weather at bottom-center which is really useful, and I have the messages complications at the bottom-left so I can quickly view my texts and respond if I need to.

My middle complication is usually set to the Music app, so I can quickly play and change music when I have my phone connected to my bluetooth speaker at home. I also frequently use my iPhone for navigation while driving, and it's a pain to swipe up the control center to access song controls, since this usually doesn't work while using Google Maps and instead causes me to mess with the maps app. Therefore, having the Music controls readily accessible on my watch is very convenient, since it allows me to change songs from my watch instead.

If I have a busy schedule, I'll change the Music complication to the reminders complication so I can see what important things I have coming up.

The only other watchface I use frequently is the Utility face, with battery percentage at top-right, weather at top-left, date in center, and reminders at the bottom. Both of these watch faces seem to work for me very well. Having your most-used apps in your dock that you access by pressing the large button is also very useful and a great improvement from the original UI!

I use 4 different Modular faces depending on what I am doing. I have my daily work face, my getting ready to run in the morning face, my weekend face and my traveling face. Each one has multiple different complications. I also have a Modular sleep face for my AW SO that I only use for sleep tracking.

Try the Modular face and keep adding them until you find the right combination that works for you. It is such a personal decision based on what you do and like, that other recommendations probably will not work for you.

FWIW, the Simple watch face can have as many complications as Modular (assuming you count the date as the fifth complication). They're all just smaller, though. ;)
