Verizon is also paying that so essentially I am getting $540
That's closer to what rep #1 said during my chat session.

I provided an example of what I thought would happen when I was chatting with rep #2. For simplicity sake, I said I have an ETF of 300 an if VZW gives me 250, then would I get 550 or would I get 50 the verbiage about "minus amount the you received for the trade-in" comes into play? She responded that I have to choose to pay the ETF or take the trade in to put towards the purchase of a new phone - not both.

So I just switched to Verizon from att and I got $240 for my trade in iPhone 6 128 gb. I still owe on my the att next $300 roughly. Verizon is also paying that so essentially I am getting $540 for switching to Verizon. And yes the phone was still locked to att at time of trade in.

Their promotion says up to $650 so you get what ever your trade in is then they will pay your etf or payoff the remaining balance on your next plan. So if you owe 450 for you iPhone and they only give you $240 that's $690 you will need to pay the other $40.

Interesting. How long did the number port take?

Any reason you don't get your kids a cheap prepaid plan? You can get a T-Mobile 5GB plan with unlimited text and 100 minutes for $30/mo. Lots of people complain when their kids use up the whole family data plan, and with the phone itself costing $40/mo on Verizon it makes T-Mobile look like a really good alternative.

that's definitely on the table, but the numbers are not really lining up to a point that it makes enough financial sense.

With VZW, it will cost me 20 dollars per line, so two lines, plus bumping up the data plan will raise my bill by 60 dollars a month, which is about the same of the prepaid plan you mentioned. Its not a bad idea and its something the wife and I are looking into, but it has to have advantages.

The last time I switched carriers my number ported over in like 5 minutes.

Been many years since I tried T-Mo and it took a good week. They gave you a temp number to use. What a mistake as in only a few days I knew that T-Mo was not for me and trying to jump back to AT&T was hard after the port process got started.

Just switched my line from Sprint to Verizon. Got a iPhone 6S 64 GB with 12 GB data & I get 20% employee discount off the $139 per month. Verizon paid off for my other line from Sprint for $630. Plus I traded in my 128 iPhone 6 & got $240. Do it bro.

The main advantage would be they can't use up your entire shared data pool. Why Verizon doesn't allow you to set limits per line is beyond me.

I think Verizon offers Usage Controls (which is a paid feature) which might have that ability.

Understood, and that's the great unknown for me. Right now they're on their iPod touches which is a wifi only device. Still, given my expectations, I think (I'm hoping), we can manage their data usage without needing to have them on a prepaid plan - its still an option however and the wife and I are not done discussing this.

I just got back earlier today from Costco that offered a promotion, and then a Verizon Corporate store.
First Costco, when I first went there, they promised that they'd give me the ETF reimbursement and trade in value of my iPhone, plus a Costco gift card. As we were getting to close the deal, the sale rep backed out and said they'd only do the gift card (no ETF reimbursement or trade-in offset to lower the cost of a new phone). That basically killed the deal for me.

We then went to a Verizon corporate store, and they explained the promotion similarly to what the fine print reads. They'll pay my ETF less the trade-in. In the simplest example the salesman used, I owe 300 on my ETF, and I get a 100 for the trade in. So I'd have 100 dollars to apply to a new phone, but only 200 towards the ETF. In my actual situation, VZW will give me 275 for the iPhone 6 plus but my ETF is 175. Since my ETF is lower then the trade-in, its really an either or situation, I can choose to have VZW pay off my ETF, or I can use the trade-in be applied to the cost of a new phone. That basically killed the deal for me (again).

At this point, it doesn't make financial sense for me to switch. I think what I'll do is let my contract run out, and if the time comes we decide to leave ATT, then we'll do it with better terms from VZW

That completely sucks...those damn salesman! I am also considering leaving at&t for the reason that they ended subscedy contract model and the fact that they are raising the unlimited plans by $5 per line. Since they will take care of the ETF on two of my 6s lines I figured to try either verizon (throught brothers name - he is an employee, they get 50% off on plans) or to get t-mobile. My main concern is to make sure if i end up leaving at&t that the two phones are both unlocked so i can use it with verizon or tmobile. figured i will bring my own devices and no subscribe to any phone contracts... planning to do this within the next 30 days.

If you want VZW (or T-Mo) to pay for your ETF, you need to trade in your phones. If you want ATT to unlock your phone, you will need to pay the ETF - kind of the chicken and egg thing. Some people were successful in getting their phones unlocked by ATT even while on contract, I was not.

well, the thing is att if waiving out ETF due to increase in monthly price for unl data plans on our lines. so its a little different, at least in my case.

Ahh, I see. Good luck with your switching then
