my god, why does everything have to be thinner all the time. starting with the "new" nano, it lost more than half of its features just to make it "smaller".

the iPad 2 is in no way fat and why does it need to be even thinner .... id rather have better specs but thats just me

So

Apple quietly moves away from Samsung.

Finally! If I were apple I would toast the day I drop them for good with their marketing and legal divisions dirty tactics.

As they used to say in the old pc gaming world, "get some skill".

Is iTunes doing 1080p yet? I honestly don't keep up well enough, but I don't think that they do.

I just wonder how a higher resolution iPad is going to affect the way video services, such as iTunes and also Netflix and Hulu and anyone else, put out their content. Maybe up to 720p won't look too noticeably degraded on a higher resolution screen when it's just over a foot away from your eyes(?).

(I'm at a 13inch MacBook right now with 1280x800 display, so I don't have a good reference point at the moment.)

Anyway, with this, and probably an Apple TV set next year, 1080p iTunes is more than likely soon to come as well!

If they can maintain those viewing angles, this sounds awesome. Leave it to Apple to fund some crazy awesome new LCD panel.

More like, leave it to Apple to be crazy enough to invest 1 billion dollars to make somebody find out how to make such a crazy screen. Remember Apple doesn't make this themselves, but maybe if it weren't for Apple with such an enormous cash reserve we would have to wait much longer for displays like this.

Not to Steve though. Even if it was thicker I bet Steve was a huge pain in the neck because of this.
Well, Steve often made mistakes. More often, he was a genius and made the right decision.

Many times throughout Apple's history, he made ridiculous demands for things like thin-ness where further thin-ness could not be accomplished. Often, the point wasn't to get things thinner, but to just push his teams to do great things.

...In our view, this should lead to several design advantages, namely the device can be thinner, battery life should be longer, and the overall experience for users should be meaningfully improved.

Now that' says a lot... ;)

Sharp makes complete sense. Sharp has made LCDs longer then any other company. It is the only company that actually manufactures in house all its LCDs. LG and Samsung outsources to various parties a large portion of its LCD manufacturing.

Moreover, Sharp has innovative technology like adding a fourth color pixel to make the screens even more Sharp (no pun intended).

Out of all the rumors, this one I think has the most validity. Apple wants to dump Samsung, and Sharp makes higher quality displays. Finally, Sharp and Samsung have a long history of not liking each other as Samsung has pilfered Sharp's technology as well.

so LGD, Samsung, now Sharp.

I bet iPad 3 will be using a Pana plasma and will be only 2 inches thick.

Watch out, I'm an analyst, you read it here first.

I stood in line for both the iP1 and iP2. Love the device. I've also fooled around with just about every other iteration of the tablet including both Kindle and Nook's latest and greatest. IMO, you see just how much Apple nailed it when you use these other devices.

That said, I won't buy another iP unless Apple releases a 7" version. This is about the only thing I think the other guys got right.

I've held on to my original iPad and resisted the temptation to buy an iPad 2. This is the one... I can't wait to upgrade!

This rumor is spot on. This is the breakthrough one, it simply makes the most sense. The iPad 3 is going to be incredible and the display technology will expand to the macbook line. Possibly the iMac/Thunderbolt displays too. Can you imagine? I honestly can't.

And to speak to other people's concerns recently about GPU's not being able to drive that size display - people would live with it. The (even mobile) GPUs of today will be able to drive the displays at high res with normal UIKit or Cocoa type workload. And games can still run at half resolution if people want. Apple would hit the target of good performance on a huge screen with 'light' GUI elements, and let users play games or whatever at full res slowly or lower res quickly. It's almost the identical stance that's been taken thus far up until iPhone 4S / iPad 2 / most recent high-end iMac.. now that the GPUs are finally catching up, I can see them 'raising the bar' again without a single thought

At the end of the day, what matters is you have a retina display.

This screen technology is going to blow everything out of the water

And the u.s government need to improve their education for engineering then apple can assemble their own products themselves and their quality will step up even more.

Haha, I'm just imagining the Samsung jokes at meetings between Sharp and Apple as both companies probably hate Samsung.

I said it last time. The next iPad will NOT get thicker and still include a retina display.

Just like at the 3GS to 4.

Oh sure they'll make the iPad 3 thinner but forget about that ultra thick iPod Touch they have these days! :D

Depending on the price, I'm considering jumping ship with this next upgrade.

Thankfully you're not running the company. Apple wouldn't be where it is today if it weren't for the product choices it made over the years.

You gotta think Sharp will be tied down fulfilling Apple's orders.

Brilliant way to suck the bone marrow from Sharp without buying a single share.

No.

Lower margin for Sharp, but guaranteed sales and no sales, distribution or marketing costs.

And I dobut it's taking up all their production lines anyway.

That was my point.

Absolutely nothing to do with it. Apple wants to be nimble and they don't want to own their own factories.
