He does have a point. Twice they've killed functionality for size.

The 3rd generation shuffle & the 6th generation nano.

Ok. But please don't forget. Apple is now the richest and most successful company in the world.

Oh my ufkin` god, i do own a 50" TV set which has lower resolution than that!

And that TV qualifies as a retina display, if you hold it 47 feet from your face :)

(I remain skeptical of retina display rumors—I’m sure Apple is pursuing all the things we’ve seen clues about, and intends to ship a retina iPad some day when it becomes feasible. But it still sounds impossible in the next year. There are so many different challenges, from mass-volume production ability to brutal GPU requirements, that sound like they’ll need more time to solve. What Apple wants to ship and what can actually be done aren’t always the same thing.)

Meh.

Analysts + Darts + Dartboardfullofwords = Mayhem.

Wake me when Apple says something about a model 3. I'll probably buy one to four for the family.

I imagine how would be nice if Apple could make a margin-free iPad, so we could make an iPad array to get a ultra high res display while they could add up processing power through (micro?)TBolt ports.

This would be the iPad Transformer :p

So. Basically if Apple comes out with a TV it will be a Sharp TV with new display designs funded by Apple and have Apple software.

Win Win for both companies.

To quote our famous member and combine the fact that Apple is moving away from Samsung memory.

Samsung is DEAD !!

And there's the difference between Apple and everyone else.

Everyone else: A billion dollars! Forget that. Well, nobody will really notice 0.7 mm. This is already one of the thinnest and lightest devices on the market.

Apple: A billion dollars? Worth it. Do it!

if it weren't for Apple with such an enormous cash reserve we would have to wait much longer for displays like this.

Bingo. Without mountains of cash to throw around, Apple would have to promise future payments on products as they're produced, and leave it up to the manufacturer to find the money to build the facility & technology to make those products, with insufficient guarantee that there would be a payoff. Instead, Apple can write a check for a billion dollars and say "we want X, make it so" - there's the money, it happens.

If they make it any thinner it will be hard to hold. If they keep it the same size, reduce the weight slightly and provide a higher rez display I would be happy. Actually if they could make it so we could fold it and put it in our pockets that would be even better.

If it's thinner i doubt it will be more than 1 mm.

If retina display and faster processor is what I gonna get with the iPad 3 I wont buy. BUT.... if that just small details of it I hope it fill my needs because I dont need a laptop since I turn on my iPad for the first time. iPad 1 was great... Then iPad 2 came with nice extras... Now what?

Ok. But please don't forget. Apple is now the richest and most successful company in the world.

and why should i care as a customer that apple is the most successful company in the world?

as long as their products "work for my needs" i dont care whos first

its not like i get any money from them lol people sometimes forget that apple is a COMPANY and not a real person to cheer for

Any chance of Siri on here even though some will be wi-fi only? Not that any of us know for sure anyways.

A Retina display is a huge deal and not just another detail.

assuming they don't change screen sizes, 2048x1536 will only get them 264 dpi.

it would have to be 2560 x 1920 to be 330 dpi

When I first read the article, I thought that surely the analyst must have made a mistake. But if you multiply 1024 x 768 by 2.5, you end up with exactly with 2560 x 1920. If the analyst is actually right (hah!), then this means Apple could be pursuing a strategy of multiplying the resolution by a factor of 2.5 rather than simply doubling (a factor of 2). Would this work in terms of scaling existing iPad apps?

Absolutely nothing to do with it. Apple wants to be nimble and they don't want to own their own factories.

No

Steve Jobs met with Obama to discuss the issue of factories. He wanted them to be in the USA. However he needed 30,000 engineers which he can't find in the USA.

Looks good!

Well, if you read what I posted before, I was a real skeptic when it comes to iPad 3 having a "retina" display. If these rumors are true though, it might as well happen. Hopefully, there will be some design changes the iPad lacked - like 2 or 3 speakers for Stereo (three for switching orientation and keeping stereo) and maybe having the speaker outlet on the side again like iPad 1 or even on the front. Would need just some holes in the glass for that much like the earpiece on the iPhone, or do you think that kills esthetics?

If the iPad 3 is gonna be way to awesome and mind-blowing,
I'm buying it together with my MacBook pro (Ivy Bridge, in a few months (5-6 :( :p

Siri? Voice Assistant? Something that Speaks?

Does anyone know anything about an future Siri or wherever voice assistant on the iPad 3?

Thanks!

Thicker an be more satisfying!

This does seem more like Apple's style. I don't think they would settle for "thicker".

It is just easier to grip something more substantial.

Think about it this way, what is easier to pick up and handle, a 8x10 piece of sheet metal or a book that size one inch thick? IPad could actually end up do thin using it becomes a human factors issue.
