Thinner, lighter, better battery. SHOCKING.
They need to stop making a big deal about it and just admit that it's like their notebooks now. They are going to be receiving periodic upgrades.
It's not Apple's fault that they have some obsessive fans.
If it's true, considering that the current iPad 4 will be discounted, it will be an amazing deal: A6X, retina, still an excellent thin and light form factor for 90% of normal people, ...
Some people I know actually prefer the iPad 4 over the iPad Mini.If it's true, considering that the current iPad 4 will be discounted, it will be an amazing deal: A6X, retina, still an excellent thin and light form factor for 90% of normal people, ...
There comes a point when too thin is a bad thing.
Why are people getting so worked up about this ?
Apple can release new hardware whenever they want to, just because the iPad you have isn't the latest and greatest doesn't mean it is somehow obsolete and doesn't work anymore.
I still have the iPad 2 and it works perfectly fine, will I upgrade to this new one ? Maybe.
You are wrong to think Ipad will just get small updates.
Things like NFC, Thinner, improvements to IOS, Facetime HD cameras are all ground breaking improvements and I'm sure Apple will bring many better ones we don't expect to see.
I think Ipad 2 will be the discontinued model.
Ipad 4 will probably continue to be made and come in at £329.
Well said. The iPad2 will do the same thing as the next iPad does when it comes out. How often will you use it to shoot or take pictures with it? How does making it lighter also make it more functional?
Apple is trying to maintain its market share. If it does not introduce an iPad every six months it will lose the market to its competitors. But that does not mean you have to sell your old ipad for the newest one introduced.
I hope Apple are dropping update schedules. Release new versions when they are ready. That way we don't have new tech getting old before it is released, or features rushed to meet an irrelevant calendar date.
Japanese blog Macotakara is reporting that a redesigned fifth-generation iPad could arrive in March 2013.
Apple just released the fourth-generation iPad about two months ago, which could make this fifth-generation iPad, if the report is true, the second in five months. The design is said to have taken inspiration from the iPad mini and will be thinner and more lightweight.
There was a time when I absolutely had to have the latest model of everything and anything less made me feel inadequate somehow.
Then I stopped being retarded.
Still enjoying my iPad2 and iPhone 4S![]()
This constant upgrading and short cycles are ridiculous and seem to be mostly marginal improvements anyway.
You're missing the point: bringing down the life cycle of iDevices means your device becomes obsolete faster. Look at the iPad1 (introduced < 3 years ago), no iOS6 (bloody shame BTW). And that means that you won't be able to profit from updates to your apps or even worse install apps at all.
Not to mention the horror for third party suppliers that can be turned off by the increase of changes to the devices.
As I stated earlier Apple is developing in the wrong direction. It's not the hardware that is lagging behind. But it is the software: iOS is starting to look really, really pale compared to Android and Windows.
I don't need to have the latest and greatest either, but my iPhone 4 was killed by a botched Batteries Plus battery install, so I ended up going ahead and upgrading to the iphone 5 with the cash they gave me for the screw up.
Then, to keep everything lightning connector and not have to keep two sets of cables, accessories, etc. and the fact I'm a photographer and thought the retina display would make a bigger difference... and because I definitely don't buy every update, but try to at least upgrade every other update, I sold my iPad2 and it's 30 pin accessories to upgrade to iPad4.
I don't usually fall for all the hype, but frankly I was expecting more of a improvement. I've got a fairly keen eye as a photographer, here's some of my work HERE + HERE + HERE
I compared hi-res images between both the iPad2 before I sold it, and the new iPad4... there really isn't a huge difference. Yes, the iPad4's retina display is a little better on normal viewing, but it's really marginal and only noticeable side-by-side. The iPad4 is heavier and I don't get nearly as much time off the battery as I did with my iPad2. It's going to cost me almost double to replace my iPad2 accessories for lightning ones.
To be honest, if I could go back... I would not have fallen for all the reviews, specs, hype, etc. from sites like this one and others... and I'd still be a happy owner of an iPad2.
These non-stop updates lose a little bit of thrill with each one. And, in real world use, they aren't really that much better than the previous models. I've been waiting for the new iMac to upgrade my 2010 iMac21, but I really don't see that the new one is all that much better than what I already have. In some respects, it seems like a step backwards and will likely just get a refurbished 2011 model instead.

Why? No one said you had to buy a new phone or tablet every year. Android devices get released every month or so by the different manufacturers. If Apple were to move to a semiannual release, they wouldn't fall behind on hardware specs, which is one area the Android fanboys (and anti-Apple marketing ie Samsung) attack Apple.
Are you one of those people that upgrades your phone every year, or do you upgrade every other, when your contract is up? Most iPhone users skip generations, so just do the same the the iPad.

Perhaps you would be happier moving to a combination of Chrome OS, Windows OS and Android OS to meet your desires and needs?
I just hope I am not going to get 5 iPads for christmas this year like a year ago. I am running out of bathrooms.
