If it's true, considering that the current iPad 4 will be discounted, it will be an amazing deal: A6X, retina, still an excellent thin and light form factor for 90% of normal people, ...

Thinner, lighter, better battery. SHOCKING.

They need to stop making a big deal about it and just admit that it's like their notebooks now. They are going to be receiving periodic upgrades.

It's not Apple's fault that they have some obsessive fans.

You are wrong to think Ipad will just get small updates.

Things like NFC, Thinner, improvements to IOS, Facetime HD cameras are all ground breaking improvements and I'm sure Apple will bring many better ones we don't expect to see.

I think Ipad 2 will be the discontinued model.

Ipad 4 will probably continue to be made and come in at £329.

I hope Apple are dropping update schedules. Release new versions when they are ready. That way we don't have new tech getting old before it is released, or features rushed to meet an irrelevant calendar date.

Some people I know actually prefer the iPad 4 over the iPad Mini.

They say even if the Mini had the Retina display, they like the bigger screen on the iPad 4.

It would be great if Apple could engineer the bigger screen + light weight factor and keep the solid metal construction, not going the way of cheap feeling plastic tablets.

Why are people getting so worked up about this ?

Apple can release new hardware whenever they want to, just because the iPad you have isn't the latest and greatest doesn't mean it is somehow obsolete and doesn't work anymore.

I still have the iPad 2 and it works perfectly fine, will I upgrade to this new one ? Maybe.

Well said. The iPad2 will do the same thing as the next iPad does when it comes out. How often will you use it to shoot or take pictures with it? How does making it lighter also make it more functional?

Apple is trying to maintain its market share. If it does not introduce an iPad every six months it will lose the market to its competitors. But that does not mean you have to sell your old ipad for the newest one introduced.

There was a time when I absolutely had to have the latest model of everything and anything less made me feel inadequate somehow.

Then I stopped being retarded.

Still enjoying my iPad2 and iPhone 4S :)

None of those things sounds groundbreaking at all. Just minor improvements.

I must admit that I'm sitting here laughing at all the people freaking out over Apple improving their products quickly. How on earth could anyone not consider that a good thing?

iPad 2 is sticking around...there is a reason...called the Federal Government.

the iPad 2 is the only iPad that has been cleared/qualified for Federal Government purchases. That's why it's still around. Whenever the FEDS get around to testing a new one, then it will qualify.

Not if it doesn't support the latest version of iOS.

Japanese blog Macotakara is reporting that a redesigned fifth-generation iPad could arrive in March 2013.
Apple just released the fourth-generation iPad about two months ago, which could make this fifth-generation iPad, if the report is true, the second in five months. The design is said to have taken inspiration from the iPad mini and will be thinner and more lightweight.

I'm a little confused by some of the terminology here and maybe it's just translation issues.

If the design of this new device is inspired by the Mini, then wouldn't this new "5th gen" iPad = Mini 2. I think they are giving the impression that this device will be an iPad 5.

I don't need to have the latest and greatest either, but my iPhone 4 was killed by a botched Batteries Plus battery install, so I ended up going ahead and upgrading to the iphone 5 with the cash they gave me for the screw up.

Then, to keep everything lightning connector and not have to keep two sets of cables, accessories, etc. and the fact I'm a photographer and thought the retina display would make a bigger difference... and because I definitely don't buy every update, but try to at least upgrade every other update, I sold my iPad2 and it's 30 pin accessories to upgrade to iPad4.

I don't usually fall for all the hype, but frankly I was expecting more of a improvement. I've got a fairly keen eye as a photographer, here's some of my work HERE + HERE + HERE

I compared hi-res images between both the iPad2 before I sold it, and the new iPad4... there really isn't a huge difference. Yes, the iPad4's retina display is a little better on normal viewing, but it's really marginal and only noticeable side-by-side. The iPad4 is heavier and I don't get nearly as much time off the battery as I did with my iPad2. It's going to cost me almost double to replace my iPad2 accessories for lightning ones.

To be honest, if I could go back... I would not have fallen for all the reviews, specs, hype, etc. from sites like this one and others... and I'd still be a happy owner of an iPad2.

These non-stop updates lose a little bit of thrill with each one. And, in real world use, they aren't really that much better than the previous models. I've been waiting for the new iMac to upgrade my 2010 iMac21, but I really don't see that the new one is all that much better than what I already have. In some respects, it seems like a step backwards and will likely just get a refurbished 2011 model instead.

This constant upgrading and short cycles are ridiculous and seem to be mostly marginal improvements anyway.

You're missing the point: bringing down the life cycle of iDevices means your device becomes obsolete faster. Look at the iPad1 (introduced < 3 years ago), no iOS6 (bloody shame BTW). And that means that you won't be able to profit from updates to your apps or even worse install apps at all.

Not to mention the horror for third party suppliers that can be turned off by the increase of changes to the devices.

As I stated earlier Apple is developing in the wrong direction. It's not the hardware that is lagging behind. But it is the software: iOS is starting to look really, really pale compared to Android and Windows.

The iPad one isn't getting iOS 6 because in doesn't have the hardware to take advantage of the added functionality of iOS 6, nor does it have some of the hardware features like cameras. It is an outlier in that is was created without knowledge of what the market would want. Apple did pretty well, considering that the iPad is the model for most "Post PC" tablets. It is obsolete only in terms of comparison with newer models, and is completely functional for what it was purchased for.

I would expect that the iPad 2 would have a much longer supported life.

Your case agains iOS is not accurate as iOS on iPhones and iPads is certainly less fragmented than Android OS on all of the OEM hardware, especially if you look at percentages of iOS devices in use that run the most current iOS version.

Your view that iOS is lagging behind Android OS and Windows is subjective, but I would note that Apple's update model with OSX isn't any different than iOS. Both iOS and OSX have and will evolve up until there is a major rewrite on the underlying kernel, code or interface, and people will consider both "stale" until the happens.

Perhaps you would be happier moving to a combination of Chrome OS, Windows OS and Android OS to meet your desires and needs?

I'm a radiologist and look at black and white (mostly) images whole day on professional monitors. For me the improvement from retina screen is huge and actually the reason I did not use iPad 1 or 2. I admit that difference is mostly how clear is the text, not how clear are the images.

FWIW , I would like to see { hear } stereo speakers in the next generation.

Later :)

Gary 

PS:

I held off buying one because of the single speaker , YES I know , "Bluetooth" external speakers. However it still would be nice to see the next one with 2 speakers , U know like the Mini !

Just my 2 cents ;)

If it approaches the weigh of the mini...I would buy in a second. Otherwise, an ounce or 2 will not be good enough.

Maybe in some ways but having just set up and installed movies, music, photos and books on my Mum's new Kindle Fire HD I can safely say iOS is far better than that modded kindle Android OS. The iPad mini is a MUCH better device full stop. All I miss on the Apple devices is the option of just plugging them in as a "Mass storage device" for easy file transfer, the OS itself is slicker than any Android device I've seen or touched and that's why people like it.

Camp 1: Apple Products are not updated fast enough...bitch bitch bitch
Camp 2: Apple Products are updated too fast...bitch bitch bitch

No matter what...someone will complain.

Why? No one said you had to buy a new phone or tablet every year. Android devices get released every month or so by the different manufacturers. If Apple were to move to a semiannual release, they wouldn't fall behind on hardware specs, which is one area the Android fanboys (and anti-Apple marketing ie Samsung) attack Apple.

Are you one of those people that upgrades your phone every year, or do you upgrade every other, when your contract is up? Most iPhone users skip generations, so just do the same the the iPad.

No, I completely agree with you! There is absolutely nothing wrong with them moving to a semi-annual cycle. I was just stating something for no reason, lol.
I upgrade my phone every two years when my contract is up. But for my iPad, I first got the iPad 2, in July 2011. And I upgrade every time another iPad comes out, ONLY because I am able to sell my current one for at least $450-$490 (I only get the 16GB Wifi). So each time, I am spending a little extra money to upgrade, but it's a small sacrifice I am willing to make.

Per Sir Ive:
“We’re keenly aware that when we develop and make something and bring it to market that it really does speak to a set of values. And what preoccupies us is that sense of care, and what our products will not speak to is a schedule, what our products will not speak to is trying to respond to some corporate or competitive agenda. We’re very genuinely designing the best products that we can for people.”

That should actually be the next iPad with Bootcamp, Chromecamp and
Androidcamp.

Imagine no more jailbreaking necessary and the incrowd people can F^$%up anything they want on their iPads, making Apple responsible that it doesn't work right.

I just hope I am not going to get 5 iPads for christmas this year like a year ago. I am running out of bathrooms.

Please e-mail me, I am ready to receive FREE iPads anytime.
