a 15" air would be my next mac, but i don't expect my 2012 retina to die anytime soon lol

Isn't that 2012 rMBP a killer Mac? This is the longest I've ever had a Mac. Always bought and sold them within 2 years. This Mac has it all (for me) and it has never not been able to do what I need it to do.

Instead of a new Air, I'd rather see an "intelligent keyboard" for the iPadPro that can turn it into a full macbook.
Something like the HP-TC1000 I owned 12 years ago. It was like having two complete different devices. "Pen" mode was great to write some meeting notes or for doing creative work. Attaching the keyboard gave full access to all full OS features. Totally simple and beautiful.

I don't care if iOS and OSX get integrated or not but would really love to just get a single device supporting the two distinct use cases. With a single set of accessories (power, keyboard, adapter cables) and Apple ease of use, performance and quality.

Unbelievable! where is INNOVATION GONE APPLE?
I'm a true aficionado, a professional designer and "small amount"stock holder.. where is a good professional laptop with touch screen?
how many laptops do you need to offer for the average consumer who just browse on Facebook...there' already 3 iPads, a million iPhones and so on...
BTW..think of fixing Mail OSX app first..it would be great not having to re open it every two minutes..
come on Apple, get a grip please, we sincerely love you.

I know I'm very VERY alone here, but i don't want retina on the Air, we have Pro's with Retina and the 2X Application from Parallels lags badly on the Retina because of the scaling up and back down it does, its silky smooth on the non retina Airs. I also see the occasional lag in other places on OS X which i don't get on the Airs which I'm sure is down to the scaling again.

What a buncha malarky!

Here's what will actually happen:

- Apple will simplify their lineup by killing the "Air" moniker
- Apple will switch to even screen sizes (12, 14, etc.)
- Apple will introduce 14" MacBook in addition to the 12" with a total of two USB-C ports each
- Apple will re-introduce thinner MacBook Pro with new screen sizes 14" and 16" and same ports
- 14" MacBook Pro will be as big as current 13" MacBook Pro but with larger screen thanks to reduced bezel by 90%
- 16" MacBook Pro will be as big as current 15" MacBook Pro but with larger screen thanks to reduced bezel by 90%
- Apple will rename iPad Air as simply iPad
- Air is overrated
Okay just admit it....you're Tim Cook

The line-up is very confusing at this point. I would do it like

MacBook 12" retina -> consumer product starts at $999
MacBook 14" retina -> consumer product starts at $1199
MacBook Pro 13" retina -> semi-pro product starts at $1199
MacBook Pro 15" retina -> pro product starts at $1799

Get rid of 'Air' moniker because everything is thin enough already.

I have a 17" MBP from 2008. It si amazing i used to carry that thing, is as heavy as an iMac.
Yeah I have a 15 inch late 2011 MacBook Pro - Feel the same way now after I've had the 12 inch MB for a short while - damn that 15 inch is big and heavy

Actually I agree with @sniffies almost 100%. As I wrote in a other thread:
– rMB will gain a 14" version and price will be dropped by $200 – and so entry model will be $1099 (for exactly what we can get now at $1299), 14" will have two USB-C slots. Who said Apple can't innovate?
– rMBP will be moved into Air's enclosure, therefore making it thinner *chuckles*. Possibly it will "gain" the rMB keyboard
– Air will be removed from lineup because it makes no sense whatsoever
– no model will feature a SD card slot, because people (example: me) use that as extra storage and Apple wants them to pay for that.
– and the MOST importantly everything will be available in gold and pink gold!

We'll find out in a few months whose predictions were the closest. :)

Yes, that's what I think what will happen too.

And I think the 14' inch will have a resolution of 2880 by 1800, giving it the screen real state of a current macbook pro 15' inch.
The 16' inch macbook pro will have a resolution of 3360 by 2100 or 3840 by 2040. The later is 4k and it is the same screen real sate as 2012 macbook pro 17' inch (4x 1980 by 1020). But knowing apple, I think they are going with the former, which is the same screen real state as the 2008 macbook pro 17' inch (1680 by 1050).

So, while Apple's game it not to have as much diversity as Android being in a maze trying to trying to choose the best way to get out, Apple still does have the "same, only on a much smaller scale" diversity.

Before there would be a reason to get more power and from a Retina display... If true, now i'll have to decide weather the Retina screen and more power is good, or go for the MBA as its thinner, non-retina size, but keeping the same screen size and lower resolution.

Why does Apple do this to me :p makes my brain work harder. Just bring back the 17' Macbook Pro and we call all go home.

Considering Apple's MBP lineup is working with a design concept dating back to 2008... They have a long way to go. ;)

I know Apple is all about making the perfect product, but it took they years to come out with the iPad Pro which MS has been making as the Surface for years and in other forms for many others. Just because the Newton MessagePad was a disaster does not mean it's impossible to make a stylus interference as an option.

It's painful to see how Apple has not been able to evolve dramatically. Apple would hate to make a convertible tablet because it would cannibalize their iPad sales. Now that tablet sales are dead, we now start to see the iPad Pro... Yet still severely limited in capabilities.

These are, most likely, the new Pros. The MacBook will replace the Air. The Air will slowly be phased out.

Actually, this rumor has happened twice before
-2012: Rumors about new 15-inch MacBook Air > reality: New 15-inch MacBook Pro with retina
-2015: Rumors about new Retina 12-inch MacBook Air > reality: New 12-inch MacBook

I always want a retina MacBook Air since 2012, but I still cannot get it

Well for me the 15" rMBP needs to be considerably lighter if Apple insist on removing useful things like Ethernet ports. The current one just sits in the middle - too heavy to be an ultrabook, but at the same time too thin to be a full-sized laptop. Ether slim it down properly and significantly reduce the weight or make it 1-2mm thicker, put the Ethernet port back in and increase the battery size. Go one way or the other Apple, but don't sit on the fence.

Other than the form factor I want a LOT more RAM. I use a lot of VMware (and I'm sure other users will have other needs for large amounts of RAM), and 16GB just doesn't cut it. 32GB would be okay, but mobile Xeon has been announced and supports 64GB. 2TB SSD and 64GB RAM would be amazing - and yes I would be willing to pay the price for it.

I'm more than happy with the performance and form factor of my 2013 MBA so really just want a better screen.

So long as Apple make one of these in 2016 (call it what you want, a bigger retina MacBook, a retina MBA or a slimmer wedged rMBP) I'll be happy.

This thread is funny. Keep em coming!

My 2c: Judging by how long they've kept the MBP with SuperDrive I don't see them getting rid of the Air, or Air-like, form factor any time soon. Then again maybe it is sandwiched between the new MB (nMB?) and 13" Pro and isn't selling well. But surely the MB with SuperDrive doesn't sell that well either! I'd still recommend an Air over an nMB for someone on a budget. Yes the nMB is essentially what the Air was originally, a premium-priced ultraportable for those who don't need power.

A 14" new MacBook seems certain. It would be a killer product if only it had another port or two and a bit more power (faster graphics).

I would love to see a 14 and 16" MacBook Pro and have long advocated it on these forums but I don't think Apple will. Apple have long stuck with 13" and 15" denominations for these products. The 15" screen size goes back all the way to the 15" TiBook. I would love to be proved wrong, but I just don't see it. Then again they did just release a ginormous iPad. Apple can be unpredictable occasionally. No one saw the new Mac Pro coming.

I used to believe that they would kill off the Air and supplant it with the MacBook but now I don't. The recent addition of the iPad Pro, the iPad Air, and the Macbook convinces me that Apple has now graduated from their Jobs-era thinking of the simple two-tiered consumer and pro product lines to the new three sizes structure.

I think each model of the MacBook product family will now include one size per MacBook product to mirror the iPad product line: i.e: MacBook (12"), MacBook Air (13 or 14"), and MacBook Pro (15" or 16").

It seems to me that Apple is banking on training consumers to think about product names rather than numerical size values to distinguish these product lines more simply and maybe more effectively. For example, if you want the smallest size and cheapest solution you go for the MacBook (assuming the Air gets a price hike from Retina display upgrades in 2016, drops the 11", and the MacBook getting a price drop at the same time). And if you want pro performance, you simply go for the MacBook Pro.

This can only happen if Apple finds a portal to another universe and puts it in every machine with the dGPU option to dissipate the heat. There's no chance in hell that thin of an enclosure can cool a quad-core i7 and a discrete AMD card. The current design is already terrible at cooling those things so a thinner design sure as hell won't help that.
