I still think we will discover some hidden capabilities once we see a few tvOS updates. VP9 on gen 2 4K wasn't known immediately. Obviously the greatly increased storage along with the A15 being metal3 compliant is one such gem. See this pdf. (it doesn't mention tvOS, but Apple Arcade games could be using that)

Remember they are rumored to announce their VR headset in January. Some integration and compatibility with any games or apps would make the most sense.

Mine is on the way. I couldn’t wait for Black Friday sale. $5 discount and 5% amazon card credit instead. I have no idea how to fill the 128GB storage as I install only a few apps.

My 2022 ATV4K arrives tomorrow and replacing my 2017 ATV4K. I want HDR10+ and faster speeds. Don’t know what the RAM is in the 2017 ATV4K but if I have more than a few apps open it takes forever to load additional content.

Edit: Just saw the 2017/2021 ATV4K both have 3GB of RAM. Maybe it is the A10X beginning to show its age. It’s 5.5 years old now. I’m sure the A15 with 4GB of RAM will be noticeable.
Indeed the box is a bit on the slow side. I notice it sometimes when AirPlaying 4K vids from my phone, it’ll get choppy quick. But apart from that it still functions great and the TV I have (2019 LG OLED) aint getting replaced anytime soon, so no need for something like HDR10+ support.

so? that mens I don't have to buy a new one yet, which is always a good thing for me
It is a good thing. It supports 4k 60Hz which is still better than what most streaming services I use support. It runs all the latest tvOS updates, apps for my NAS, and now Matter support. The lone thing I wish it did more was FaceTime, allowing a webcam to be plugged into its USB port so we could FT from our family to others using the TV. But that’s it really.

I'm not sure that I've kept track of what year my Apple TVs were released, or when I bought them. They're both 4K though. Maybe 1st gen?

Is Apple TV still considered a hobby to Apple? "One more Hobby..." I'd say, with all the shows they're producing, not at all?

Continuity Camera seems best hope for this wish to eventually come true. Maybe it shows in the next tvOS update or three? Seems like a natural. I would guess this actually WILL come to tvOS eventually.

Hopefully it will be that instead of the Frankenstein device we keep envisioning, usually described as Soundbar + AppleTV + FaceTime Camera + Router/Extender + <others>. The various visions of that can read interesting at a glance but become messy practically… such that it would only actually fit a subset of us AppleTV fans.

YES I want this, that is really the only thing that could convince me to upgrade until the whole world is 8k ready (I live in AU so it'll be a while, still got under 20 down and 1mb up here)
edit: Australia is a large place and many people have faster connections that me I know, I don't even live in the country, im legit in suburbs right off of a capital city

Not yet in Amazon AU or the shops.
Funny thing is that you can still buy the second gen at the old price. Go to the JB HIFi website and see for Apple TV, and you can see the second gens at AUD$30 more than the new third gen, higher capacity models.

As a 2017 ATV 4K owner, there’s no good reason for me to get this.
For the new Siri Remote alone its worth the upgrade to even the $99 2021 ATV....throw in A12 (vs A10), Thread (vs no Thread), HDMI 2.1 (vs 2.0), WIFI-6 (vs WIFI-5), High Frame Rate (60fps) support, ARC and eARC, Gigabit Ethernet, and a Lightening Cable....and the $99 2021 ATV almost a no brainer upgrade to the 2017.

HDR+ support will help you for certain brands of TV to get better color.

More storage and a faster processor if you want to play games on it.

If you have incredibly sensitive hearing, they eliminated the fan.

It would be great if it had Safari, so we could use it for Xbox Cloud Gaming and use it to watch YouTube on the browser (which in my opinion is much better than the YouTube app). But I guess Apple will never put Safari on it.
It does have WebKit internally. The issue is likely just that Apple doesn't think the browser experience for most sites is compelling enough with just a remote control/game controller.

I believe they stopped calling it a hobby once it had an App Store.

Hope everyone is enjoying their new ATVs!

Would be very grateful if someone could please check the audio output capabilities of the Music app? This can be done by going to:

Home Screen --> Settings --> Apps --> (APP SETTINGS) Music --> (AUDIO) Audio Quality

Does "Lossless" show as "ALAC up to 24-bit/48kHz" ?

Or (wishful thinking) 24-bit/96kHz or 24-bit/192kHz ?

Thanks in advance!
