Am I missing something here? It seems strange that a device that has to be attached to something (keys, dog, etc) in use will require an accessory to perform that basic task?
I would hope (but not assume) that the tag has a hole to use with a key ring, and these are for situations where a keyring can’t be used. And that they are mostly third parties trying to monetize, regardless if anyone needs it.

Really, how many of the consumer goods in the world does anyone *need* anyway...

I’m hoping for a kind of inverse find mode, where a deliberately located tag can be used to find you. These things are effectively BLE beacons. So if we place a few around the house, in pre-planned locations, surely your phone or watch can locate itself fairly accurately according to tag proximity using the U1 and triangulation. Tie this in to home automation and you’ve got some useful features, like activating stuff when you enter or leave a room. Maybe some interesting AR ideas too.

There are other ways to do some of this, and for it to work well it might require frequent pings off the tags, which I guess might not be possible due to battery life. Could be cool, though. We’ll find out soon enough.

It's Apple. Remember the gen 1 Apple Pencil? Give them one generation to let them figure out how they design things don't necessarily fall in line with how people actually use things.

Like the Pencil, they'll get it right on the second try.

Price $ 25-29
Question is are they sold separately as a pair ...we’ll know Tuesday

Would be cool if you could put a few inside your car in random places and use that as a GPS in case it gets stolen or you can’t find it in a giant parking lot.
Finding your stolen car, yes. One would be enough thou. Unless you want to fool the thief with two.
Finding your car is already saved in Apple maps when you park.

I'll get one for my dog. He is already chipped (actually mandatory here) but it would be just faster and easier on the mind to retrieve him this way. Depending on the price, maybe another one for my set of keys.

When it comes to THEFT however, I wish it was as small as possible so the pick pocketer may not even be aware that he is being tracked at that moment.

Apple has re-designed their software for tracking your items.

Of course they are going to release AirTags.

Tim has trypophobia.

Tim: What’s that hole there? Do we make money on that hole?
Designers: No, it’s just so the user can can attach it to stuff.
Tim: So take away the hole and make them buy an accessory.

Designers: No, it’s just so the user can plug in their earphones.
Tim: So take away the hole and make them buy Bluetooth earphones.

Designers: No, it’s just so the user can install a GPU.
Tim: So take away the hole and let them buy an external bay.

Designers: No, it’s just so the user can fit more RAM.
Tim: So take away the hole and let them buy a new Mac.

I am in for them. One for my bicycle and one for my Vespa scooter. Just curious how they will implement the anti stalking feature without rendering the anti theft feature useless.

Doesn’t matter how small it is. The pick-picketer’s iPhone will tell him he’s being tracked and present him with options to locate it and disable it.

They will charge on Apple Watch charger. That is my guess. It will reduce electronic waste by not introducing a new charger and allow them to be waterproof.
That would be too convenient for many of us.

I predict Apple will have the courage to omit this feature.
