I never understood people going through great lengths to hide the design of Apple products. Am I the only one who goes case-less for their iPhone?

Not at all. I hardly know anybody with a case that's always on. I find that some sleeves can be quite nice though, like those from Sena.

These are just ridiculous.

Seriously. it's not like you are going to drop your wrist worn watch. It's tied onto your arm. I mean seriously!

I have only damaged a watch once, and it was only the band, because I was helping a friend work on his car by reaching down to hold something and nicked the stainless steel link.

So if anything, they should offer link protection. lol

I only "get" these if you your job is very physical. Otherwise yes they are very ridiculous looking.
Apparently many people who are buying Apple Watches are used to swinging their arms through the air like they just don't care... and smashing them against walls and doors.

I'd hate to be around them, jimmy-arm and all that. :p

You should not wear a watch while climbing ;)

Why not? On a huge day-long climb it's a useful way to tell the time, and with my Pebble I'm able to see any important messages that come in without having to dig my phone out of my bag.

I scuffed up a watch once just by reaching something at the back of a fridge. Granted it wasn't a sapphire lens... I'd worry about those glass Apple Watches though.

Some of these commenters need to have a reality check. Take me for instance. My day job is in a comfy office and there's no way I would be caught dead wearing this around town. But in the evening I've been working on improving my house. I've got a lot of rough work on my plate. Everything from resurfacing the driveway, to installing a patio (hauled 9,000 lbs of materials the other day), to building a gate on my deck, to putting a fence on my yard, to just normal stuff like mowing, trimming, weeding, planting. I don't want my $700 stainless steel watch to get torn up, but I still want to track my activity and it would be nice to get messages where as now I don't because I generally don't have my iPhone in the yard. The key for me, however, is how easy something like this is to pop on and off. I don't want to have to swap bands.

Handriss (Hand/Fist jam) no watch will survive this. And besides this I never saw just one climber wearing a watch while climbing.

Who wears $700 of anything when weeding???

Just take off the watch.

Unless you have a job where you're more likely to damage/scratch your watch like a police officer, construction worker, hospital/nursing home worker, etc., there's no reason to put a case on your Apple Watch.

Yes. For different reasons: I don't care for protection. I simply don't like the design of the watch. I understand Jony Ive's unisex approach. But the result is way too feminin for my taste. So I will hide that little soap bar in a case that hopefully will make it look like a man's watch. Some added bulk is a welcome side effect. I'm used to high-end mechanical timepieces. Even the 42 mm Apple Watch feels tiny on my (actually very average) wrist.

The three different Spigen cases I ordered last week will arrive today. I'm sure each of these will make the watch look better.

Two good reasons for a case:
1. The watch is too ugly.
2. The watch is too small.

Ha! Yeah there is handjamming, I'm not a fan (broke my wrist once doing it, had a fear ever since). I wear my watch further up my arm when I'm climbing, though. And sometimes it goes around my ankle if there's nowhere to put it mid-climb and it gets in the way.

I wear a fuelband too and despite that getting in the way it's taken no damage but I would not take something with a metal band up there.

smh

Really people?

At this point, who is the audience for Apple Watch?

Seems to me that it's mostly targeted towards people who want to be fashionable and/or trendy, and/or interested techie/developer. With Apple marketing the watches as a luxury item, I'm leaning the majority of sales on the fashion and trendy folks.

Cases take away the beauty of the watch in trade for protection. Seems like they're feeding a super niche audience with this. Not a bad business decision to get in on this early, but you have to do it good cause this market for smartwatch cases isn't going to be growing very fast.

I prefer not to have a case on my phone. The main reason I have a case on the majority of the time is for the kickstand so I can watch videos.

I don't see that as the market at all! The market is people that want to stay connected to friends/family and work without having to check their phone constantly.

People that want to track their health and activity.

Not all of the watches are intended to be luxury items. By far most of them are the Sport model.

Not everyone thinks the watch is good looking. I think it's boring as hell and too sleek!

I was thinking about this and if the fact I'm so against these is hypocritical. I always cover up the beautiful and slim design of the iPhone with a case so why shouldn't I the watch? Obviously dropping isn't a concern as much as it is with the phone. But swinging into walls isn't a concern with the phone like it is the watch. Still, that said, I may be a hypocrite but I still think these are ridiculous and overboard.

+1 for your objectivity about yourself!

Cop, construction worker, cowboy, Native American or any other YMCA character.

Everything about the apple watch is completely ridiculous.

What an absurd product.

Indeed.

It amuses me that the Apple Watch garners such preposterous add-ons.

Truly, Apple under Tim Cook has gone up itself to a foolish degree. First this ridiculous travesty of a trinket, then the pointless MacBook. What next?

Most people commenting here must not realize that these aren't intended for every day use. These rugged cases are meant to be used for extreme circumstances when the user wants to also have their watch on them like hiking, climbing, construction, etc. when its likely that something might damage the watch while it on the wrist.

Couldn't agree more with what you said. You hit the nail in every respect. You were matter-of-fact objective. Made yourself clear. But refrained from any personal attacks. Loved your post. Please feel hugged. In a very personal, yet distant and non-physical way. No, I don't have any homoerotic tendencies. I'm just a little moody after a long and somewhat complicated day and feel like telling the truth.

Whatever, there’s a few thousend miles and some language and culture barriers between us, soul mate. So, take it as it is: an instant internet friendship declaration. Meaning nothing. And everything at the same time. Because it's pure and simple, truly heartfelt and not influenced by any calculating thoughts. It's honest. Yeah, whatever.

Actually I just wanted to say: Thanks. Nice post.

Whatever.

Can't believe how much hate there is around here for something like this (or the Watch in general). I'll definitely be getting one, when I find the right one that doesn't cost seemingly as much as the Watch itself. I hate that I can't record my mountain biking rides as workouts because I don't want to scratch the screen or bezel if I crash.

I would also like to know what face is on the pic with the ActionProof bumper.

Looks like an Airspeed Indicator from an airplane. Probably just a mockup that's loaded on the screen as an image.

My method of keeping expensive jewelry or hardware (like a GPS, compass, camera) from being damaged while I live or work outside is usually to a) never wear it in the first place. or b) put something around it to protect it from damage until I need it.

Do things outdoors and pay for something like this to go on your wrist? A case is hardly more gaudy than some of the 'armored' watches that have trended with active people.

I'd never buy one, but if anyone in my family decides to, I'm going to recommend the Rev B with more 'resistances', or a case.

My work's health plan tracks my physical activity and pays me for it. So I want to track everything. It's actually going to pay for most of my Apple Watch once I hit the cap. I'm also losing weight which is good. Best motivation I've found in a long time to stay active. I'm also a watch person and am used to wearing one everywhere I go.

If I can buy something for $20 or so that I can easily pop on and off my watch to make it less likely to get the casing scratched up, I'll definitely get it. The milanese loop won't really get scratched up but I might buy a black sports band anyway since it's so easy to swap. Alternatively I might just take off the straps and pop it into my pocket. Does anyone know if fitness tracking still works in that configuration? I guess I could just buy a fitbit too but then I'd have to spend a bit more money to get a good model and I'd have to somehow merge all the data for submission this autumn. Blah.

$350 is a lot to pay when you have really great fitness trackers, with watch faces, for less than half the cost. This alone is enough to call the Apple Watch a luxury item. But then you claim that it has basic usefulness by not having to pull out a phone to check messages and communicate... LMAO that you really don't see how that is a luxury feature.

You're better off buying skins and custom watch bands for the Apple Watch than slapping on a case, but who knows, maybe there will be good-looking, useful cases.

Of course not all watches are luxury items. Duh! But the Apple Watch, even the Sports Edition, is a luxury item. Apple wants it to be. It is priced to be. It is designed to be.
