The iPhone was probably originally planned as the iCamera. But instead, apple included telephone and media functionality around a camera and call it the 'iPhone'.
That's why Apple is so obsessed with upgrading the camera portion. It sold millions and will continue to sell as well.

14 Plus makes more sense than 14 Max.
Having both a "14 Max" and a "14 Pro Max" would create a confusing line-up especially when they'll probably be almost equal in size.

Whatever the final name is, I don't think the big 14 will get any of the "Pro" or "Max" naming.

It has to be "Plus" as it's already a part of iPhone vernacular.

In my opinion, the Pro and Pro Max are the only iPhones worth getting.
I mean looking at what the Pros will offer over the 14, I absolutely agree. If anyone is spending full retail on an iPhone, they really shouldn’t bother with the 14’s.

As for strictly visually speaking, the camera array looks balanced on the 14 and 14 pro max only. The camera array looks silly on the Pro, and the dual lens on the 14max looks comically small.

I don't think its any more confusing than having the 14 and 14 Pro which are basically the same size. Not to mention it's a pretty good strategy, someone who wants the largest screen might not be willing to pay $300 more for the Pro Max, but they would be willing to pay $100 more for the regular Max.

Plus hasn't been used since the 8, while Max has consistently been used since 2018.

The big phones will be the 14 Max and 14 Pro Max.

It’s not necessarily an obsession for Apple, it’s the main selling point to a consumer as a desirable, which translates to higher sales.

The most popular iPhone/smart phone feature, is the camera. That’s why Apple places a lot of marketing and emphasis every year into the Keynote, is because this is what sells the iPhone over any other feature, given people invest their personal lives into their smart phones with the camera quality. Nothing else trumps the iPhone camera generally when consumers are considering to upgrade.

Exactly. Unlike a faster chip which most people wont notice in their day-to-day, improved cameras are something people can actually see and benefit from.

If they are still going to use steel, this is going to be dissapointingly heavy. I love the camera bump size on my 12 Pro, if only it had 120hz I would’ve been happy for a year or two more.

The names are still ******. Under Steve Jobs:
iBook, iMac
PowerBook, PowerMac

Since then
iPhone Normal, Pro, Pro Max, Plus, SE
Why is it not Pro Plus? Or Max instead of Plus?
M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra
Why here Ultra and not Pro Max?
Why not for iPhones:
iPhone XS, XM, XL and
iPhone Pro XS, XM, XL
Or anything else, that is remotely more consistent in its naming.
Apple's product naming strategy does not prioritise honesty or logic. Names like "Pro Max", "Ultra", "Studio" are about creating products that stand out from one another and are perceived as more different than just the "medium" or "xtra large" size of the same thing.

Apple wants products with names that anyone can instantly grasp the comparative value of and thus push more sales of the most expensive products and less of mid-tier and budget options.

I'm not saying it is helpful to you or logical. But Apple's product naming strategy couldn't be better from a marketing standpoint. It's a cornerstone of their success.

‘Disappointingly heavy’ compared to what?

Consumers are already adding thick bulky cases to these phones, I doubt they’re going to complain about what material Apple uses for a metal casing. I mean, let’s be realistic, that’s not going to stop this phone from selling, just because Apple may or may not use ‘steel’ for a material choice.

Agree. The naming conventions are an inconsistent cluster. And yet Apple’s “something for every possible type of human” approach does appear to be working very much to their incredible advantage.

But from an end-user pov, I’d love to see every every category get boiled down to two tiers: entry/casual and pro/plus - complete with features and price points that clearly separate the two tiers. If you need varying physical dimensions within those two tiers, that’s fine. Just ensure their naming convention is consistent across all categories.

I’m sure that idea is full of holes. Go easy… 🤪

Just make the darn phone thicker so that bump isn’t so bad. It’s annoying to use on a flat surface.
Believe it or not, thicker phone can make the iPhone feels unwieldy, especially with the weight of the Pro models. It could feel heavier and bigger than it really is in the hand even if it’s only a mm more, especially with the sharp edges.

Or Apple could go back to rounded edge design to help with the perceived thickness. Maybe on iPhone 15?

There is some internal logic and consistency though.

For example, the Mac studio implies that it’s meant to be used by creators at home, possible those who have embraced the WFH lifestyle. Which could partly explain the absence of a Kensington lock.

Pro means better specs (eg: iPad vs iPad Pro) while Max means a larger version of something (eg: iphone pro max being a larger iPhone pro with otherwise identical specs).

Then you have AirPods vs AirPods Pro (the latter comes with noise cancelling) and the AirPods max (being a larger version of AirPods Pro). Maybe it should have been called the AirPods Pro max but you get where I am going with this.

It’s neither confusing nor excessive once you know what you look out for.

To be fair, the naming committee was probably this close to using Mac Mini Pro.

This year will be my first pro.
Considering I'm mostly interested in shooting video clips with filmic pro, I actually missed the telephoto camera and the prores recording...
After having gotten this pro, though, I'll surely stick with it until the 16 gen.

Time to upgrade my XS Max I guess. I did get a new battery a year or so ago. Got a new screen replacement as they broke the original one replacing the battery. I think it's time to get the 14 Pro Max or whatever it's called.

You're not getting a week of regular use even with a powerbank twice the size of the Pro Max.

Eh, maybe not, but the current phones are typically 12-18 hours of normal usage for me. It would be nice not to have a dead phone if I was so tired at the end of the day I passed out and didn't plug it in.

Incredible what tiny things people get obsessed about. Show me what it can do and not that its 1mm wider.
Some people need there daily complain, otherwise they are not happy and have a good day 🤣🤣🤣

I'll just buy 13 mini when these old new phones arrive. It'll be cheap, and it'll fit in my pockets nicely. Enjoy your tablet filled pants!
