Again, $600 on the iPhone. You're going to have a phone for 2 years either way. Pay as you go to save money is just being pointlessly frugal, especially after spending so much on the phone to begin with.

Okay, you keep saying iPhone, but I think you mean iPhone 3G.

Because I paid $399 for my phone, which is the same price as those who signed a two year contract. But I didn't sign a contract.

Seriously why would you have a Pay As You Go Plan with an iPhone, that is like having racing slicks on and off road truck, sure it works, but it is not the best way to do things.

Realize all wireless carriers will eventually get rid of prepaid and pay as you go, they want that guaranteed income on a yearly or 2 year contract, besides you get better stuff when you have a contract. ;)

Go out get a 3G or 3GS and get on the two year contract, this way you do not have to worry about minutes or have to watch how much data you use, especially with the new features on 3.0 or the 3GS phone. ;)

Your statement is very obtuse. There are a lot of reasons to have pay as you go. Some people just need a cell phone for emergencies or occasional use when away from the phone. Also prepaid service is not going anywhere, in fact it just got better. Straight talk is a new prepaid service from Tracphone using verizons network. With straight talk you get 1000 anytime minutes, 1000 txt/SMS/mms for $30 flat. This will cause over carriers to react and compete.
The bottom line is just because you don't need something, don't assume that the rest of the world is the same.

I've still yet to hear a reason that doesn't concern money. You can save money, you have bad credit, etc. Those are the reasons to get a pay as you go plan. Those are also reason NOT to buy an iPhone.

Here's your reason: I bought my iPhone with PAYG, because I knew a new iPhone was approaching (this was right before the 3G) and I didn't want to risk not being allowed to upgrade within my contract.

If I understand this correctly, AT&T is basically discontinued this option. That's crappy. They should be grandfathered in unless there's a technical reason why this is impossible.

Has anyone ever thought that some people don't need 450 minutes per month? It has nothing to do with not financial responsiblity, in fact someone who is using pay as you go is exercising finacial responsiblity. Hell I would pay 30 bucks a month just for unlimited data and pay as you go when I need to use the phone (also add that to fact that most people I talk to are on ATT so it's free). Stop looking at this in such a black and white way.

Man some of you are stuck-up!

What, now we have macrumors accounting services? Free for members, first 50 insults are free.

How can you only talk for 10 minutes a month? Why even have a phone?

Oh, you didn't see the part where I said I use it for texting and data?

Seriously, you guys who are saying the iPhone is a luxury phone only for people that want to pay really high cell plans sound like AT&T PR or something. I paid $350 for my iphone 3G, and that isn't ANYTHING compared to the amount I'd have to spend on 2 years of contract service..

Just because I buy myself a $350 phone doesn't mean I should have to spend $2,000 on my cell plan over two years.

Just got off the phone with a surprisingly competent AT&T rep, and we went through all the options.

If you are a 'Pick Your Plan' customer, with the $19.99 iPhone specific unlimited data option, you'll be fine. If you;re on any other type of data plan, you're screwed. Get a Pre, or say hello to T-Mobile.

I mentioned I was using an iPhone 3G, which according to the official release by AT&T ( http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/popups/gophone-customer-important-information.jsp ) isn't supported, and she still said I'd be fine. I hope so.

Oh yeah, I'm paying $19.99 for unlimited 3G data. Ha. :D

What's the iPhone specific unlimited data package?(with pick your plan for $19). It looks like the $19 data is just 100mb on their site.

Also if you send/receive an sms with pick your plan does it give you the annoying "You have just spent __ blah blah blah" message every time? It does with PAYG.

You know whats wrong...ATT not shipping Premier orders. Instead they are shipping out new accounts/non premier....that is wrong.

Yeah, they killed the unlimited. I'm grandfathered in, somehow. I forgot. Huh.

I only get the annoying messages at the end of phone calls.
