This is exactly what i try to keep putting accross.
I actually like the design of the new iphone over the 5/5s, however just because its a larger screen would not make me convert. For me IOS just does not float my boat. Its simplicity which suits some puts me off, i love to tinker, tweak and do what i want when i want. One day im running touchwiz the next its aosp, slimkat,paranoid,carbon,pacman or even a nice piece of dirty unicorn.
The choice and freedom you get is why Android is so powerful just take a look at Xposed and Tasker.
And i do laugh when i hear all this crap about landscape mode. For a start if you do any dev work on android you would know that there are many resource files in all apk files. With images / xml's for hdpi, xhdpi and so on..... so the correct res graphics are displayed on the correct screen size and layout.

Maybe they actually want to know what they're talking about when giving their opinions of the iPhone and comparing it to Android?
That or maybe they like reading about tech regardless of which "side" they're on?

I am curious if you share an equal amazement at the same coming from the iPhone camp. I mean hell, just visit a Samsung article posted on this here MacRumors site to see all the over analyzing iPhone people posting in the comment section.

I find in many of these discussions there is one thing that never seems to be considered. Every time an iPhone is released we get people saying how Android has had these features for years and the iPhone gets a bit of a kicking for not including all the features some feel it should etc etc. I saw a picture doing the rounds this week of a Nexus 5 vs an iPhone 6 with the features listed side by side. The slogan was I think 'welcome to 2012' or something like that. Now this one thing that is never considered and quick to over look is the fact that if it was all about screen sizes and feature specifications, iPhone users would already be using Android IMO. It's not about that, in fact I have no idea what powers my phone, I certainly couldn't recite it if asked. It's about having a phone that runs well and provides a satisfactory service and after years on Android myself, I found iOS very capable of that. I pre ordered my iPhone 6 and am happy I can restore it from a back up and continue being satisfied it does everything I need it to do despite not having quad core this and that. It's not about that for me 🙂

What would make me switch would be that my current phone is not performing to my satisfaction or another phone has some features that I really want that isn't available on my current phone. Switching from Android to iOS or vice versa requires some tradeoff. There will be some things that one environment can do that you cannot do or cannot do as well on the other. Also, if you are used to one, switching requires some orientation period. For each person, the reason would be different and that reason may or may not be strong enough in favour of switching.
Even before the iPhone 6 announcement, my experience is that iOS does some things better than Android and Android does somethings better than iOS. It still is the case after iPhone 6. Both environments do get better over time. I don't think we will see a time where one will be better than or equal to the other in every way. There are some differences which is why there will be tradeoffs when switching from one to the other. For most people, if they are comfortable with what they are using, they will be reluctant to change.
I also have an iPad 2 and it makes an amazing alarm clock. I also play games on it occasionally. Can't believe how heavy it is compared to today's tablets.
I am a long time android user. When I use the iPhone it is just less functional period.
Simple and essential things that I take for granted on my note3 are just not possible on ios/iphone:
-Use the home button to answer call.
-one tap shortcuts on home screen to send a predefined sms.
-usb host where I can just plug in my portable/thumb drive directly to phone to copy/play files.
-standard usb port. It is just a pain with iPhone proprietary port.
-file system
-voice call recording.
-scheduled/timed ring profile auto change based on calendar/location.
-fully functional file attachment capability in email.

It's a valid point. At the same time when Apple does have a marketable upgrade it's first page news for weeks and weeks. The entire specs race makes no sense anymore, instead we need core features and new paradigms. Core features like battery life for example, if all the phone makers concentrated 99% of their energy on battery I wonder what products would come out. Also things that could be very valuable, innovation like those dot cases the HTC phones have, the features of the Moto X, having always listening modes, no bezels like the sharp aquos, etc etc. These are useful and innovative features which are not tied to having faster cpu's.
Apple still has a certain pull to it though. I even found myself checking out the Apple pre order page earlier today. Not because there is any particular innovation in the iPhone 6, there is a sum total of zero innovation IMO. But just that pull of Apples simplicity and the solidness of their hardware. Fortunately it was only a temporary pull after thinking about the large amount of functionality I would lose going back to Apple.
Basically I want a blank home screen... I've been researching ways to do this and I think it's possible but not as easy as it ought to be, all good though!

I have no problem with a civil discussion about what people feel or the short comings of the iPhone or iOS, usually when compared to Android. That's what this forum is about and even though I'm predominately an Apple user at this point, I spend most of my time at MacRumors in this forum because it's not a perpetual Apple love fest and there is a lot of insight into various platforms/devices in relation to iOS to be found here, considering many members that post here have fairly extensive experience.
Take mib1800's post..I don't have a need for much of the functionality he gets out of using Android, but I'd also wouldn't realize much of it could be done, it clearly is appropriate to the thread and adds to the discussion. Most importantly, he doesn't feel the need to slip in some useless cheap shots or cliche stereotypes to make his point...
...Unlike the useless posts such as this.

Seriously, why does this bother you? I admit it doesn't really add to a discussion, but if I had a dime for every time I heard that TouchWiz is garbage without an explanation, I'll be making serious $$$. As someone who likes TW, I'm not going to cry foul every time someone says it sucks.
All in all, I am sadly disappointed in the release, I was really hoping for a water resistant iPhone(would have bought it in a heartbeat). But after no word on that, I will stick with my 5s.
The iPhone is now essentially exactly like Call of Duty series. They had one massive hit and now they just keep milking the cow from that one hit. Every year a new iPhone/game is release and people are throwing their money, just because of the market share it initially had. The sad thing it is true, how the article states, they have lost their "wow" factor and are now just catching up with what has been out there already. ie the apple watch...
But overall I am satisfied with apple's stand point, after-all they are making me money 😉 (stocks)

Okay, sure, maybe tomorrow I'll explain why iOS blows. Not that it will make one bit of difference to the Apple religious right. But maybe. In the meantime, all you freedom hating zealots continue enjoying your locked down appliances. In iOS land, ignorance is definitely bliss.

You said it yourself--adds absolutely nothing to the conversation and more times than not leads to a pages long bickering match, often with a closed thread. It can suck having to sift through posts to find one actually pertinent to a discussion.
I don't take any personal offense to any of this nonsense, always found it amusing how people jump to defend a particular phone, platform, etc like a mama bear defending their cub or someone who's sole existence on these boards apparently is to incite the very bickering conflict I previously mentioned. I'm not paid by any of these companies, don't have significant investment in any of them either so why would I care if anyone here likes/dislikes/loves/hate any of the devices. I'll admit I'm no saint on here either with an occasion shot taken, but usually it's to dispel something that I don't necessarily find to be true. I try to be objective, don't alway succeed. 😉
What I do like is being able to come and have a reasonably civil discussion that actually has some useful content, maybe debate the merits of a particular device, or even ask opinions or seek advice, and posts like the ones I highlighted serve absolutely zero useful purpose.
So yeah, I called 'em out on it.

Yet they lag badly in market share. Its not hard to figure out why they set records. They sell one new phone every year..... This year is two. Not that I even care because I don't but setting record sales for themselves isn't some great thing. They still aren't #1 in marketshare.
I'm not considering a IP6 because it still lacks things and i dispise iTunes but if all these other phones keep getting bigger then the 4.7" could be looking good to me. I'm not interested in a 5.9" Nexus 6
